Thompson, Abigall Yager, Ming-Lung Yang ORPHEUS: See now, I return to you, dear woods and beloved hills, made blessed by that sun through whom alone my darkness is lightened. FIRST SHEPHERD: Look, Orpheus, how the shade of those beech trees invites us, now that Phoebus darts burning rays from heaven. On these grassy banks let us rest, and let each in his own way let loose his voice to the murmur of the waters. FIRST & SECOND SHEPHERDS: In this flowery meadow every sylvan deity is often wont to linger for his pleasure. Here Pan, the shepherds' god, has sometimes been heard lamenting, sweetly recalling his unrequited loves. CHORUS of NYMPHS & SHEPHERDS: Here the charming dryads, a company always decked with flowers, have been seen gathering roses with white fingers. Therefore, Orpheus, make worthy of the sound of your lyre these fields, where there blows a breeze with the perfumes of Araby. ORPHEUS: Do you recall, O shady woods, my long, bitter torments, when the rocks, their hearts softened, replied to my laments? Say, did I not then seem to you more wretched than any other? Now Fortune has changed her tune and turned my woes into rejoicing. Once I lived in sadness and sorrow; now I rejoice, and those anxieties that I have suffered for so many years make my present happy ...

The poem seems ready-made for musical setting, even if Monteverdi felt it necessary to clinch the point by changing the first parola rima (Rinuccini's first line is 'Zefiro torna, e di soavi odori', rhyming with 'fiori', 'Clori' and 'canori'). The composer's new 'accenti' prompts a setting for the most part over the syncopated ciaccona bass pattern in a jaunty triple time. Nor does he lose any opportunity to 'paint' the specific images of the text - the 'sweet accents' 'murmuring' through the branches, the flowers made to 'dance' to the wind, the 'sweet an joyous notes' of the nymphs and the (high) mountains, low valleys, and echoing caverns. But for the final tercet Monteverdi shifts to a dissonant madrigalian style, contrasting the joys of spring with the pains of the lover: triple time returns only at the end as the poet counterpoints weeping and singing, the reference to 'canto ...

The madrigal "Altri canti d'amor, tenero arciero" is from Monteverdi's eighth book of Madrigals. This dramatic piece is scored for six voices, two violins and four violas. The Late Renaissance madrigal came to full flower in the music of Monteverdi. His five-voice A un giro sol, from the Fourth Book of Madrigals (1603), represents a superb example of the composers style in the use of rich word painting and vocal passagework. Monteverdi's nine madrigal collections (published between 1687 and 1638 the first five when he was working in Mantua, the rest in St. Marks in Venice), mark the transition from the older polyphonic style of the Renaissance to the accompanied solo madrigal of the Baroque. Jerusalem, which is built like a city the parts of which are joined together. To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, the assembly of Israel, to profess the name of the Lord. For there are the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for peace for Jerusalem: ask for abundance for those that love you. May there e peace within you and abundance within your towers. For the sake of my brothers and neighbors, I have spoken peace unto you; For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good. It was first performed before the Accademia degl'Invaghiti on 24 February 1607 in a now unidentifiable room in the ducal palace at Mantua, and was published in Venice in 1609. The opera saw its modern debut on 25 February 1904 in a concert version in Paris directed by Vincent d'Indy. The opera continues to be regularly performed and its anniversary year of 2007 saw many productions.

This is a completely wrong performance of the ending to Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea" which, in the best sense of the words, is a work about completely immoral people who never do deserve our affection. The final duet, in a way, is the wrong ending word, as the seriously cold-hearted lovers celebrate their love which has concurred all, including all the more or less good people around them. And yet, the performance in question is exceptional with both Arleen Auger and Della Jones are refreshingly clear-voiced and in balance with each other, so I think that some of the lack in dramatics can be forgiven. Enjoy :)!

Disclaimer: I do not own this! Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, most commonly translated to English as Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, is a Christmas carol of German origin. The text is thought to be penned by an anonymous author, and the piece first appeared in print in the late-16th century. The hymn has been used by both Catholics and Protestants, with the focus of the song being Mary or Jesus, respectively.[citation needed] In addition, there have been numerous versions of the hymn, with varying texts and lengths. The tune most familiar today appears in the Speyer Hymnal (printed in Cologne in 1599), and the familiar harmonization was written by German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609. The tune was used by Johannes Brahms as the basis for a chorale fantasy for organ, later transcribed for orchestra by Erich Leinsdorf, and by Hugo Distler as the basis for his 1933 oratorio Weihnachtsgeschichte ("Christmas story"). The English translation "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" was written by Theodore Baker in 1894. A translation of the first two verses of the hymn as "A Spotless Rose" was written by Catherine Winkworth and this was set as a SATB anthem by Herbert Howells in 1919. Another Christmas hymn "A Great and Mighty Wonder" is set to the same tune as this carol and may sometimes be confused with it; it is, however, a hymn by St. Germanus, 734 (Μέγα χαί παράδοξον θαυμα), translated from Greek to English by John M.
