15 years the war stopped and the desire for living, and the joy of the Mozambicans are quickly felt. After a one day stop in Maputo, the capital, we went up North by bus, to met the group of music « Positivo ». Through the music they sensitize the population on the social problems and before all the AIDS. we attended a workshop, with a multitude of children it was extraordinary! Song, dance, music, giggle, so much fun.. Not too far, there was a pefect spot, wind, waves and the sun. There were supers conditions, waves of 2M+ super clean, wind from 15 to 35 knots the whole framed by whales, dolphins, and turtules. I (jérémie Eloy )was travelling with the windsurfers of the Team Oxbow Carine Camboulives, Manu Bouvet, with Lou, also Charles Vandemelebrouck, and Ben Thouard the photographer, a true festival of boards sports with us 4 (surfing, stand up, kitesurf and windsurf) Positivo then gave a concert, they are very powerfull and funny on stage. We ended up going in islands to North, a kind of small paradise, transparent water, wind, camp-site under the tent and wood fire (I had forgotten the chamallows), the whole on a old boat with latine sail. A film was made by Philippe Benamou and Eric Bacos, a road humanitarian and sporting trip, which you will find on TV and DVD.

The 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is a human rights treaty setting out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children. The nations that ratified it are bound to it by international law. One of them is Mozambique. But in fact, the country has developed into a major hub of child trafficking in southern Africa. The children come from Mozambique itself, but also from Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Roughly two years ago, Mozambique introduced special legal and administrative measures to stop the kidnapping, sale and trafficking of minors, but violations are rarely prosecuted. CHEN: Giant rats in are being used to detect landmines in Mozambique. The rats, too light to set off the mines, are trained to smell and point them out to their handlers. Let's see how these peanut munchers are helping clear some deadly hazards. STORY: These giant pouched rats are working hard to rid Mozambique of landmines. Landmines are a dangerous legacy of the 16 year civil war with Portugal which ended in 1994. According to Handicap International, an estimated 20 people step on landmines every month in Mozambique. Under the umbrella organisation of APOPO, an NGO concerned with the global landmine problem, researchers came up with the idea for using rats in landmine detection. Seeing the expense and slowness of traditional methods using metal detectors and other foreign and expensive technologies, these researchers found the rat to be a ready local solution. [Mkumbo, Senior Rat Trainer]: "Rats are the animal which are social. They like friendship, you can handle them easily, you can train them easily, you can keep them easily. Also, they are intelligent to know what you need them to learn." These rats are light and will not explode mines, allowing them to sniff out TNT, then scratch the earth as a sign to their handler that a mine is present. The animal is then rewarded with a loud "click" from their trainer and a few peanuts and a bit of banana. The rats learn quickly to not miss a mine, or they might miss a meal. When they're not in the field, the rats train twice a ...
