The Marshfield Mummers, otherwise known as The Old Time Paper Boys, perform their play on Boxing Day every year. Christmas hymns are sung in the market place then around 11 am they arrive and perform. They then process through the village in their paper covered costumes with further performances, ending around 12 noon at The Crown. This tradition nearly died out around 1930 but was then revived by the local vicar and can be seen from the video is now quite a popular sight. The video shows the Mummers arriving in the market place, processing, acting in the main village street, and final dispersal at The Crown.

The Mummers (aka The Helium Kids) perform XTC's 'Battery Brides' at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA on January 18th, 1995. The Helium Kids performed three XTC tribute shows between January 1994 and October 1995. The Mummers were the alter-ego of the band when the band dressed in paper mummer suits. The Mummers Dance January 1, 1985, Stratford: I have just read an account of a mumming troupe which boarded a Polish ship stranded in the harbour in St. Johns, Newfoundland, on New Years Eve, to entertain the sailors. According to James Frazer in his book The Golden Bough, mumming has its roots in the tree-worshipping of the peoples who inhabited great regions of a forested Europe now long gone. Mumming usually involves a group of performers dressing up in masks (sometimes of straw) and clothes bedecked with ribbons or rags, and setting out on a procession to neighbouring homes singing songs and carrying branches of greenery. Its primarily associated with springtime and fertility, and it has a cast of stock characters, like the Fool, which recurs in some form or another from Morris dancing to the shadow puppet plays of Turkey and Greece and even the morality plays of the Middle Ages. 17th January 2009. First performance of Crook Morris Mummers Play as part of the Wassail celebrations at the Hare & Hounds, Bowland Bridge. The Mummers Play is a folk play popular throughout the whole of England in various forms. The word Mummer possibly came from the Greek word "Mommo", meaning a mask, the wearing of which became popular at royal functions in the fourteenth century, the practice of such being termed as "Momerie". Traditionally the performance itself begins with an introduction, usually by Father Christmas, who also clears space in the venue for the play to be performed. The play then moves onto a hero combat with two combatants who differ from play to play, such as St. (or King) George, A Turk, a soldier, a dragon and various ruffians. Much boasting of martial prowess by the combatants occurs before and after the fight. The person who is killed is always brought back to life by a quack doctor who first boasts of his skill in medicine. The play ends with a plea for money from the audience and then usually a song or Mummers carol.
Mummering has a long history in Newfoundland, I would go out mummering myself at home. During Christmas, people dressed up in silly clothes and covered faces would visit people's homes and entertain the residents with dancing and music. After the residents guess everyone's identities, the mummers would be rewarded with treats, alcoholic beverages, and purity syrup. In small communities like the one I am from, this was the closest thing to a pub-crawl you could get to since there are no bars.
