The arrival of American entrepreneur Lee Gordon in 1953 marked a major expansion in Australian entertainment. He established himself with a record-breaking tour by American singer Johnnie Ray and Gordon's now-legendary "Big Show" promotions brought to Australia—in many cases for the first or only time—dozens of the biggest American jazz, rock and popular stars of the era, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Artie Shaw, Nat King Cole, Johnnie Ray, Frank Sinatra, Bill Haley & The Comets, Little Richard, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and many others. He also promoted local talent by using Australian acts as supports on his concerts. In the mid-1950s Festival Records grabbed an early lead in rock'n'roll by releasing Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" in Australia in 1956 after the single had been turned down EMI/Decca. It became the biggest-selling hit ever released in Australia up to that time, and its success set Festival on its way to becoming the dominant Australian local record company for the next fifteen years. Soon after, inspired by Elvis Presley and Little Richard, Johnny O'Keefe achieved local stardom after his breakthrough appearances on Lee Gordon's Bill Haley tour. O'Keefe carved out a singular career and became a legend of Australian rock music. I'm Joslyn Davis, thanks for joining us today. Billboard magazine has just revealed it's 21 under 21 list, meaning the top 21 music stars under the age 21. Billboard compiles the list based on the young stars' "potential to rule pop culture over the next 12 months," so this list isn't about those one hit wonders out there. There were a few surprises, but all in all, I think you guys will be pleased with the run-down. So here are few of the brand new up and comers making the list - there's Australian singer Cody Simpson, who came in at number 20. He's continually compared to Justin Bieber, who of course is also towards the top of the list too. Another semi-surprise was Chris Colfer who scored the number 13 spot. We know him from Glee, but maybe he'll soon be doing a solo project too. If so, we can't wait. "Whip My Hair" sensation and mini-me Rihanna Willow Smith stole the 7th spot, beating out a ton of veterans like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Miranda Cosgrove and Taylor Momsen, all of whom are on the list below her. Also landing a spot is one of our favorite newcomers, Greyson Chance, who at number 9 is proving that he's around to stay. Charice will be a regular in the second season of the hit TV show, according to the Phillippine Daily Inquirer. The singer's manager, Grace Mendoza, tells the publication, "Charice will soon join Glee... and not just as a guest, but as part of the cast in a new season." The news marks a remarkable week for the 18 year old, who landed the number eight slot on last week's Billboard charts with sales of 42985 for her self-titled debut. She says, "This has been the most exciting week of my life." Charice became an international sensation when a fan posted a performance of the young star taking part in a talent contests in Southeast Asia online.
