Mututho Laws are Back

If you consume alcoholic beverages, you will still have to be out of the bar by 11 pm and the earliest you may start drinking remains at 5 pm during weekdays and 2 pm over the weekend. This is after the high court lifted a temporary injunction against the implementation of the alcoholic drinks control act, commonly known as the Mututho law, after a group of traders moved to court to challenge the new law. High Court suspends 'Mututho laws'

Support for 'Mututho' laws

Mututho:Food prices to blame for the rising number of strikes

Raila, Mututho Clash Over GMOs

The raging controversy over the importation of genetically modified maize played out in Parliament yet again with Prime Minister Raila Odinga clashing with Naivasha MP John Mututho over reports that the GMO maize was already in the country. While Mututho tabled documents he claimed showed that GMO maize was already being distributed in parts of the country, the Prime Minister countered with his own set of documents from the Kenya Bureau of Standards showing that no such maize had been cleared for circulation. Rome Statute Debate Continues

A motion seeking to withdraw Kenya out of the Rome Statute was dramatically stopped in parliament, after the speaker ruled that it was inadmissible due to errors in drafting. The motion, tabled in parliament by Chepalungu mp Isaac Ruto had sought the immediate withdrawal of Kenya from the Rome Statute. But as soon as the speaker ruled the motion inadmissible unless it was re-drafted, Naivasha mp John Mututho moved an edited version of the motion for debate. However, hawk-eyed mps cited violations of the house procedures, prompting deputy speaker Farah Maalim to rescind his earlier decision to allow debate on the Mututho motion. Tragic Drinking Competition

Perhaps it was due to the effects of prolonged periods without illicit brew due to the recently introduced Mututho law that saw a group of young people take to a drinking contest that turned tragic in Kisumu. With 500 shillings prize money to boot it was too good a deal to ignore. However, the winner of the contest passed away from the deadly effects of the brew while the runner up went mad and the third is receiving treatment at the Nyanza General Hospital in Kisumu. And as Chris Wang'ombe narrates the episode has left a bitter taste in the mouths of those lucky to have lived to tell the story.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga says the parliamentary report implicating his family in the maize scandal has been authored by those he described as criminals tarnishing other people's names. Speaking in Kisumu during the launch of Uzima University in Kisumu, Raila said the truth about the motive of the report tabled by agriculture committee chairman John Mututho will soon come out. Elsewhere Ikolomani mp bonny Khalwale challenged the prime minister to defend himself on the floor of the house instead of attacking the report in public.
