Angry at NATO? Pakistan shuts route for Afghan supplies

And NATO's war effort in Afghanistan is facing another obstacle. Pakistan has closed an important supply route for the coalition. A hundred fuel tankers and trucks haven't been allowed into Afghanistan. It is seen as a retaliation to a NATO helicopter raid into the territory of Pakistan in which 3 local soldiers were killed and 3 more wounded. The alliance says the incident is now being investigated and promised the Pakistan's sovereignty would be respected. Recently the number of missile strikes and helicopter raids against suspected militants hiding in Pakistan's tribal zone has been on the rise. Pakistani officials say the attacks are violating international law and should be stopped. Pakistani political expert Ahmed Quraishi told RT that the US-led coalition has failed to persuade Pashtun tribes living on either side of the border to join peace efforts.

NATO Trucks Hit in New Pakistan Raid

NATO supply trucks were attacked again in Pakistan on Wednesday. In the latest incident, 40 supply trucks were attacked on their way to NATO troops in Afghanistan. Forty trucks carrying supplies for NATO troops in Afghanistan were attacked by gunmen in Pakistan's north on Wednesday, the second such attack in a day and third in a week. The assault came on the same day the US apologized for a NATO cross-border incursion that killed three Pakistani soldiers last week. A joint investigation into the incident found that US helicopters had mistaken the soldiers for insurgents. Amid mounting anger over the deaths, Pakistan closed a vital NATO supply route, officially citing security reasons. Analysts say the alliance will be able to cope with the impact of the attacks and closure of the border crossing - in the short term. [Lawrence Korb, Sr. Fellow, Center for American Progress]: "If this goes on longer than a month you have got a serious problem. You can deal with it in the short term because obviously you have extras supplies there. You probably have at any time 30 days worth of supplies for the soldiers... marines on the ground, particularly in terms of fuel. After that you are going to have a problem, because there is no way you are going to make it up coming the other way through Russia and the former Soviet republics." The bulk of supplies for foreign forces in Afghanistan move through Pakistan, which is itself battling a Taliban insurgency.

More NATO supply tankers torched in Pakistan

www.timesofearth.com Islamabad - Suspected Taliban fighters in southwestern Pakistan have set fire to nearly 30 tankers carrying fuel for Nato troops in Afghanistan in the sixth such strike in just over a week, officials said. At least 20 armed men launched the attack on the tankers, which were parked at a roadside restaurant near the town of Sibi on Saturday. "The attackers first fired shots and then fired small rockets at the tankers. Twenty-eight to 29 tankers caught fire," Naeem Sherwani, a government official, said. He said one of the paramilitary soldiers escorting the convoy was wounded. Armed groups have stepped up attacks on convoys carrying supplies for Nato forces since a cross-border US helicopter raid on September 30 that killed two Pakistani soldiers in northwestern Pakistan. In retaliation for the raid, Pakistan closed a vital supply route for the international forces in Afghanistan and has kept it sealed since, despite a US apology for the death of the soldiers. Pakistan's foreign ministry said after the US apology that security was being evaluated and a decision on reopening the supply route would be taken "in due course". Lorry routes through Pakistan bring in around 40 per cent of supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan, according to the US Transportation Command. Of the remainder, another 40 per cent comes through Afghanistan's neighbours in the north and 20 per cent by air. Discussing Saturday's attack in the southwest, Talat Masood, a military ...

Trucks and oil tankers were stopped at the border post of Torkham just north of Peshawar and it was unclear when the post would reopen, a Pakistani security official said. A closure of the crossing through which NATO and American troops receive most of their non-lethal equipment is rare, and signaled a downturn in the military relationship between Pakistan and the United States just three months before the Obama administration takes stock of progress in Afghanistan. A NATO helicopter attacked a border post at Mandati Kandaw, a town close to the capital of Parachinar in the Kurram area of Pakistan's tribal region, at 5 am on Thursday, the official said. Three paramilitary soldiers of the Frontier Corps were killed, and three others injured, he said. Another border post at Kharlachi in the Kurram region was struck a few hours later, the official added. The two posts are about 15 miles apart and border Paktia Province in Afghanistan. Air strike kills 28 Pakistani troops

Nato helicopters attacked a military checkpoint in northwest Pakistan, killing up to 28 troops and prompting Pakistan to shut the vital supply route for Nato troops fighting in Afghanistan, Pakistani officials said. The commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, General John R. Allen, said he had offered his condolences to the family of any Pakistani soldiers who "may have been killed or injured" during an "incident" on the border. A spokesman for the force declined further comment on the nature of the "incident" and said an investigation was proceeding. It was not yet clear, he said, whether there had been deaths or injuries. The US embassy in Islamabad also offered condolences. "I regret the loss of life of any Pakistani servicemen, and pledge that the United States will work closely with Pakistan to investigate this incident," ambassador Cameron Munter said in a statement. It is "highly likely" that Nato was behind the raid, a Nato spokesman has told the BBC. Brigadier-General Carsten Jacobson said Nato was investigating how the incident occurred and sent condolences. The attack comes as relations between the United States and Pakistan, its ally in the war on terror, are already badly strained following the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by US special forces in a secret raid on the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad in May. A predawn attack by North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces Saturday killed at least 24 Pakistani soldiers and injured 13 others, the Pakistani military said, adding further stress to the US's troubled relationship with Pakistan and complicating efforts to push forward peace talks with the Taliban. Pakistan's army reacted angrily, calling the "unprovoked" raid on two Pakistani border posts an "irresponsible act." Possible Chinese Military Sneak-Peek at US Stealth Helicopter

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http ☛ Add us on Facebook ☛me.lt China has long been known to steal US military secrets... the latest may be a high tech stealth helicopter used to kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. According to a report in The Financial Times... authorities in Pakistan gave Chinese authorities a peak at the chopper. The Financial Times reported on Sunday that Pakistan might have allowed the Chinese military to view and take samples from the tail of the wrecked stealth helicopter used in the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The helicopter tail contains cutting edge stealth technology that could have been reverse-engineered by the Chinese military. The FT article quotes sources close to the White House and the CIA, acknowledging that Pakistan had allowed the Chinese military access to the helicopter wreckage, even after being explicitly asked not to do so. So far, the White House has not given comment. If true, it would not be the first time the Chinese regime has stolen cutting edge military secrets from the United States. It is widely believed that the Chinese Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter jet was made possible by pieces of a US F-117 Nighthawk the Chinese military got after the plane was downed in Serbia in 1999—during a NATO-led bombing campaign. The Russian Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter is thought to also owe its existence to pirated pieces of the same F-117.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Abdul Basit, told reporters that authorities are evaluating the security situation and will make a decision to reopen the supply route "in due course." US ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, called the helicopter missile raid a "terrible accident" and made a public apology to the country and families of the victims. General David Petraeus, head of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, also apologized for the soldiers' deaths, saying coalition forces "deeply regret" the loss of life.
