Chinese Authorities Lose Control as Village Revolts

Now the situation has become a standoff as villagers have kicked out both local officials and police. That came after the suspicious death of one villager in police custody. Here's the latest. The over twenty-thousand residents of the village of Wukan in south China's Guangdong Province have expelled all local Communist Party authorities, including police, and blocked road access to the village. The British newspaper The Telegraph was able to get a journalist on the ground in Wukan on Tuesday. Malcom Moore called the current incident the first time on record that the Party has "lost all control" in a situation of "open revolt." This marks the latest escalation in an ongoing confrontation between villagers and local Communist Party officials they've called corrupt and abusive. For three months, Wukan residents have been staging occasional large-scale protests against a longstanding series of abuses committed by local Party officials. The villagers' biggest grievance was corrupt officials profiting from illegally selling the villagers' land. The current intensified protest, including the expelling of all police and officials, came after the death in Party custody of Xue Jinbo. Japan's Solar City of Future

WONG: While most people in the world are considering more energy efficient means of living, Japan is one step ahead. One solar-powered city offers an energy self-sufficient community that produces its own power. Let's take a look. STORY: These dark rectangular solar panels could hold the key to a completely self-sufficient community. Ota City, located about 80 kilometers north of Tokyo, is one of Japan's sunniest spots and home to strawberry fields. Quite interestingly enough this nature hotspot is where 550 homes are given free solar panels from the government, as part of a study on how avoid blackouts by sharing solar power. Mika Hiroshima's family moved to the neighborhood three years ago to try out solar power. All of her electrical appliances are mostly powered by solar energy and when they have some unused electricity left, they can sell it to a local power company and make a profit of up to 5000 yen, or about 50 US dollars, a month. [Mika Hiroshima, House Wife]: "I had never thought I'd be receiving money instead of paying when I receive electricity bills. People had told me how good this is but I didn't believe it until I actually saw negative numbers on my electricity bills. Then I realized how wonderful this system is." Solar panel makers say that at high noon in sunny weather, a 4-kilowatt rooftop power generator can yield enough power to run four dryers at once. In cloudy weather, the power generated is less than half of that. Experts say if families buy them ...

Apple's new iPhone 4S and its electronic helper Siri has become a serious smuggling problem in China. Chinese Regime "Orders" Dalai Lama to Reincarnate in Tibet

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http On Monday the Chinese regime announced that the Dali Lama must follow the traditional reincarnation method in choosing his successor. Chinese authorities banned reincarnation without state approval in 2007 but now say the latest order is for the purpose of "preserving tradition." The announcement has been met with anger from the Tibetan community. Here's more. On September 1st, 2007 the Chinese regime banned reincarnation without state approval, yet now the officially atheist regime is ordering the Dalai Lama to reincarnate in China after he dies. The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in Northern India, is reported to be thinking of choosing the next Dalai Lama from outside of China. Yet the Chinese authorities announced on Monday that he must not break with tradition, and that the next Dalai Lama, the highest title in Tibetan Buddhism, must be chosen following the reincarnation tradition. But there is a catch—the Chinese regime says it has to approve the reincarnation of any living Buddha. In 1995, the Dalai Lama, following the reincarnation tradition, named a boy in Tibet as the next Panchen Lama, the second highest title in Tibetan Buddhism. The Chinese regime put the boy under house arrest, and installed another Panchen Lama in his place. The Tibetan Government in Exile reacted with anger at Monday's announcement. ① Nine Commentaries on the communist party, first Commentary

The 8 next commentaries are available on this playlist me.lt On What the Communist Party Is This is the first of Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party. Foreword For over five thousand years, the Chinese people created a splendid civilization on the land nurtured by the Yellow River and Yangtze River. During this long period of time, dynasties came and went, and the Chinese culture waxed and waned. Grand and moving stories have played out on the historical stage of China. The year 1840, the year commonly considered by historians as the beginning of China's contemporary era, marked the start of China's journey from tradition to modernization. Chinese civilization experienced four major episodes of challenge and response. The first three episodes include the invasion of Beijing by the Anglo-French Allied Force in the early 1860s, the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 (also called "Jiawu War"), and the Russo-Japanese War in China's northeast in 1906. To these three episodes of challenge, China responded with the Westernization Movement, which was marked by the importation of modern goods and weapons, institutional reforms through the Hundred Days' Reform in 1898 [1] and the attempt at the end of the late Qing Dynasty to establish constitutional rule, and later, the Xinhai Revolution (or Hsinhai Revolution) [2] in 1911. At the end of the First World War, China, though it emerged victorious, was not listed among the stronger powers at that time. Many Chinese believed that the first ...

Whales Rescue Diver in China

Two beluga whales saved the life of a diver at an aquarium in northeast China on Tuesday. Diver Yang Yun was taking part in a free-diving competition to apply for a whale training job at Polar Land Aquarium in the city of Harbin. But when she was 15 feet down in the icy water, her right leg cramped up. These two beluga whales, a couple named Nicola and Mila who were swimming in the aquarium with Yang, sensed her distress. They moved towards her and helped her to the surface. Yang was one of seven final candidates competing for the job and had been required to dive as deep as possible without any breathing equipment.

Japanese Math Professor Excellent Optical Illusionist

For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara spends much of his time in a world where up is down and three dimensions are really only two. Professor Sugihara is one of the world's leading exponents of optical illusion, a mathematical art-form that he says could have application in the real world. Three sloped ramps are aligned along three of the four sides of a square. Each ramp appears to be sloped in the same direction but when a marble is placed at one end of the ramp it seems to defy gravity. It's called an "anti-gravity slide". Only when the the entire structure is turned 180 degrees, is the illusion revealed. Japanese mathematics professor Kokichi Sugihara from the Meiji Institute near Tokyo, has made a career of creating optical illusions. He's devised and built more than a hundred of them, like this one called "Perches and a Ring". [Kokichi Sugihara, Meiji University Professor] "Among these models, there are those which are reproductions of optical illusions, and others that seem like normal models, but when you add movement to them, they show movement that should be impossible in real life. This is done by using the same trick, and I call them 'impossible motions'." Professor Sugihara's "impossible motions" have been recognized around the world. He won first prize in an international competition last year with this one, called "Magnet-Like Slopes". Sugihara says the success of his illusions is tied to human perception ...

Invisibility Breakthrough for Japanese Researchers

The team, led by Dr. Susumu Tachi, from Keio University, is now adapting their findings to help pilots, drivers, doctors and others. Retro-reflective projection technology uses a computer, a video camera and projector to shine background images onto the front of a subject wearing specialised clothing, creating the illusion of invisibility. What makes the technology unique is a fabric made of glass beads only 50 microns wide, which can reflect light directly back at the source, much like the screen in a cinema. Viewed from near the light source, the projection is bright even in broad daylight, and researchers say the material can be applied to almost anything. In the short term, the team sees usage in car interiors, airplanes and helicopters. They say blind spots could be eliminated and accidents and hard landings avoided by making walls seemingly transparent. The eventual goal though is to create an "augmented reality" that allows anyone to easily see information on real world objects. [Dr. Susumu Tachi, Keio University]: "Looking to the future, instead of glasses, people could wear this and it would act as a navigation system. It could also tell you who someone is, if you meet them around town." In the few years since the technology's ...

NTDTV Satellite Broadcasts to China Shut Off

Uncensored TV Service to China Shut Off Seven weeks away from the Olympics, millions of households in China are no longer receiving the satellite broadcast from the largest independent Chinese-language TV network. New York, June 23 -- On Monday, June 16th, at approximately 6:30 pm US EST time, New Tang Dynasty Television's (NTDTV) satellite broadcast covering Asia suddenly stopped after more than four years on air. Eutelsat Communications, the satellite operator, said that its W5 satellite had experienced "an anomaly to part of its power generator subsystem" and it had "reduced by a small number the operating transponders on the satellite" in collaboration with the satellite's manufacturer, Thales Alenia Space. One week has passed, NTDTV's signal remains dark across Asia, and we still do not know what caused the anomaly, why NTDTV's service was shut off, and when it will be restored. Under normal commercial practice, if a transponder goes down then the satellite company responsible rapidly assures alternative service for its channels. "This is an urgent matter of highest importance to NTDTV and to our viewers who depend on us for uncensored news and information in Mainland China," said Zhong Lee, President of NTDTV. NTDTV has received much support on our audience feedback web site, including these messages from China: "We feel like we cannot breathe the fresh air if we cannot see NTDTV. And it's making China's communist leadership nervous about what that could mean for their future. [Li Fengzhi, Former Intelligence Officer for China's Ministry of State Security]: "Today I stand here, with my back to the embassy that represents China, and solemnly declare that I am severing all ties with the CCP. This is the conclusion I have come to after lengthy and serious consideration, and it is something from the bottom of my heart." Li Fengzhi is a former Chinese intelligence officer. The movement's organizers say there have been more than 100 million participants in total. Unlike most political movements, Tuidang does not call on its participants to donate money or even take specific action—all they ask is that people state their withdrawal from the CCP. Bears Rescued from Torturous Bile Farm

Chan An animal rights group rescues twenty-eight bears in China. An NGO dedicated to ending animal cruelty in Asia have just released footage of 28 moon bears that were being rescued from a life of torture on bile farms in China. STORY: The animal rights group, Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), say the bears were rescued from a farm in Ziyang, in Sichuan Province. Then they were brought to a rescue center in Chengdu in cramped cages and in shocking condition. Five were already dead. The rights group's founder says the surviving bears were emaciated and wounded in various ways and appeared terrified. Some of the bears were blind... some had shattered teeth and were severely wounded. [Dr. Heather Bacon, AAF Senior Veterinary Nurse]: "We're a little bit worried about the bear here just in front of us. She's basically been lying down in the same position even whilst we've been moving around and off-loading other bears in front of her. She's making a very long groaning noise and she just seems very disinterested in anything that's going on." Bear bile is used in traditional Chinese medicine and the black market trade is thriving. It is believed that more than 7000 bears are imprisoned in the farms across China. The bears are milked daily and kept in tiny metal cages for up to 22 years, before usually dying slowly as a result of chronic infection. Thailand's Queen Mourns Protester

STORY: Thailand's revered Queen Sirikat arrives at the funeral of one of two protesters killed last week in a tear gas attack by police in Bangkok. Police had also used smoke grenades to try to force thousands of anti-government protesters away from the national parliament. Hundreds were hurt by shrapnel. Some lost limbs. Police say they were not the cause, but forensic tests have shown some of the tear gas canisters used are capable of such damage. Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has apologized for last week's deadly clashes. In a televised speech to the nation, he also addressed growing calls for his resignation. [Somchai Wongsawat, Prime Minister of Thailand]: "The government is giving support to amend the constitution. The amendment could lead to everyone's acceptance to go forward. If all Thais are ready to accept the change that will benefit them, then I'm ready to step down without any problem." He went on to say he doesn't think leaving the job he's had for just three weeks will solve Thailand's problems. The protesters have virtually paralyzed the government, polarized society, and already seen off one prime minister. But they vow to keep occupying Government House until they get a leader with no links to ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Somchai is a brother-in-law of Thaksin. Protest organizers see the queen's funeral visit as the strongest sign yet that they've got the support of the monarchy.

They wanted to finally approve legislation to a free trade deal with the United States. But Democratic Party members opposing the deal broke their way in. South Korea and the United States reached the free trade deal last year. The agreement, which is expected to add about $20 billion to annual two-way trade of $78 billion, has not been approved by legislatures in either country. The conservative Grand National Party, which holds a majority in South Korea's 299-seat National Assembly, said it wants to approve the deal by the end of this year. Surveys show a majority of South Korean support the deal. Protesters outside the parliament building say are it is a way to overcome the South Korean economy crisis. Cross-Eyed Opossum Captures the Hearts of Germans

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, becomes Germany's newest star. Thousands of fans are already following the animal's Facebook page. She's middle-aged, grey-haired and stays up all night. Still, Heidi the cross-eyed opossum is Germany's biggest media sensation, and she has not even made her debut at the Leipzig Zoo. Heidi appears to be the next in a line of animal celebrities in Germany. The two-and-a-half-year-old opossum has grown popular on Facebook, pushing 82000 fans. She has sparked a popular song on YouTube and will soon star as a soft toy. Zoo officials believe that Heidi's crossed eyes could be the result of a poor diet when she was young, causing fat deposits to develop behind her eyes -- neither of which causes her pain or poses a health risk. [Stephan Kraa, Vet]: "There could be many reasons for this. In the majority of cases it is inherited and is caused by a lack of synchronization with the eye muscles of the opossum. It can also be as a result of fat deposits behind her eyes and as Heidi's sister also has squint eyes, it is probably a genetic problem with them." Poor vision is not much of a problem for Heidi. As a nocturnal animal, opossum's rely heavily on their sense of smell instead of their sight to get around. The public will not get their first glimpse of the opossum until July when the zoo opens its tropical wildlife exhibit. Demand for information about Heidi has been so high the ...

Green Algae Blankets Chinese Beach in Qingdao City

For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Chinese vacationers hoping for blue seas and white sands in the coastal city of Qingdao are out of luck. Instead, they've been confronted with something else - bright green sea and sand. Beachgoers in China's northeastern Qingdao City were greeted by a sea of green on Monday, with algae covering the beach and part of the sea. Some vacationers are still swimming despite the algae, although the foul smelling green blanket is creating problems. "It definitely impacts [my swimming]. When you go down you can't come back up, and when you come up, you can't go back down." This man is a regular to Qingdao, and remembers better times. "I've been coming to Qingdao to swim every year since I was small. I would always swim in the sea, but after these past two years, it's no longer good." Though green algae is not believed to be poisonous, it can consume large amounts of oxygen and threaten marine life. Beach workers, volunteers, and visitors helped clean a carpet of algae about 1300 feet long and 98 feet wide, China's state-run media reported. Local maritime agencies believe that rising water temperatures have supported the algae's rapid growth, according to state media. This isn't the first time the green algae has plagued the coastal city. In 2008, tens of thousands of tons of algae were removed before the sailing events for the Olympics.

Swedish Helicopter Robbery—Trial Begins

A robbery using explosives, chainsaws and a getaway helicopter sounds straight out of the movies. But CCTV footage reveals the way in which a major cash depot was robbed in Sweden. The trial begins for ten people charged in connection with the heist. It may look like something out of a movie, but this robbery last September is completely real. CCTV footage of the heist shows a number of robbers landing on the roof of a security company's facilities in Sweden which houses a cash depot. The footage, released by Swedish police in July, shows the culprits using explosives and chainsaws to get inside the building and at the money. After less than half an hour the theft is over, and the robbers complete their getaway by helicopter. The vehicle was found near a lake in their north of Stockholm, but only a fraction of the five million US dollars stolen has been recovered. On Monday, 11 months after the crime, the trial began

Japanese Scientists Create Touchable Holograms

For more news and videos visit ☛ ‪english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ ‪http Add us on Facebook ☛ ‪me.lt Researchers at Tokyo University have come up with a technology that is a first and significant step away from the mouse and keyboard touchable holograms. [Hiroyuki Shinoda, Professor, Tokyo University]: "Up until now, holography has been for the eyes only, and if you'd try to touch it, your hand would go right through. But now we have a technology that also adds the sensation of touch to holograms." The technology consists of software that uses ultrasonic waves to create pressure on the hand of a user touching the projected hologram. Researchers are using two Wiimotes from Nintendos Wii gaming system to track a users hand. The technology was introduced at SIGGRAPH, an annual computer graphics conference, and has so far only been tested with relatively simple objects. But its inventors have big plans for touchable holograms in the future. [Hiroyuki Shinoda, Professor, Tokyo University]: "For example, it's been shown that in hospitals, there can be contamination between people due to objects that are touched communally. But if you can change the switches and such into a virtual switch, then you no longer have worry about touch contamination. This is one application that's quite easy to see." Touchable holograms could be used for a wide variety of things... everything from light switches to books with each appearing when needed, and then disappearing when not. And ...

AsiaTalk:Falun Gong Story ( 1/3)

ntdtv.com In the stage of China, before an audience of the entire world, a drama of life and death is playing out. In 1999, the Chinese communist regime launched a campaign to crush the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Ten years later, the campaign has destroyed tens of millions of lives through torture and abuse, political persecution, and alleged organ harvesting. Ten years later, Falun Gong practitioners have endured unimaginable pain and suffering, and in the process launched a global movement to end their persecution. Through exclusive interviews with Chinese refugees and China experts, "A Decade of Courage" examines four of the moments that changed modern China: April 25, 1999, the day 10000 Falun Gong practitioners gathered outside the National Appeals Office in Beijing; May 13, 1992, the day Falun Gong was first taught in public; June 10, 1999, the day the Chinese regime created a secret police agency with the mission to destroy Falun Gong; July 20, 1999, the day Falun Gong practitioners across the country were arrested and the campaign against Falun Gong began. Exploding Watermelons, Latest Food Scandal in China

This time, it's exploding watermelons. Farmers in eastern Jiangsu province say they used a chemical to make the watermelons grow faster, so they could make more money. Now they have to deal with huge losses because their crops have been ruined. A farmer, Liu Mingsuo was hoping to cash in on his watermelon farm this year. But now he's counting his losses after his watermelon crops began exploding on the ground. Liu only started growing watermelons this year. He says a local agricultural expert advised him to spray his crops with a type of chemical. It's supposed to make the melons grow bigger and taste sweeter. But in a bizarre twist, the watermelons began bursting open, well before they were ripe. In just one morning, Liu had to throw out more than 11000 pounds of his crops. Farmers nearby are also finding their watermelons exploding. Even those with crops that seem fine are having difficulty selling them, because fruit markets fear they could explode later. This is the latest case of Chinese food producers trying to make a quick buck by artificially boosting their products. Some netizens say they're glad the watermelons exploded on the farms because now the chemicals won't reach their mouths. The Chinese regime has allowed wider media coverage of food scandals recently. House Prices Plunge in Chinese Ghost Town

Blocks of homes and shops have remained empty for years. Falling prices demonstrate what can go wrong in a property boom that loses sight of real demand. There is a sense of inevitability about the crash of real estate prices in Ordos. That city is widely known as China's ghost town—for its brand new, empty office buildings, shopping plazas and apartments. The city in the steppes of Inner Mongolia borrowed the equivalent of 180 million US dollars from banks in 2004 to build a new district, Kangbashi. It includes a 79 million dollar museum. But while 1.4 million people live in greater Ordos, including the old part of town, less than 50000 live in the new district, a government official told Reuters. For a time the cranes kept building more homes in Kangbashi, despite blocks of towering new apartments sitting empty and highways that were silent during rush hour. But now even the cranes have stopped, and workers have no employment during winter. [Yang Zhouluo, Local Resident]: "The locals all loaned their money and all money has been invested in property. Now no one can sell apartments, and the money is gone." Migrant workers are fleeing the old part of the city, Dongsheng, where people actually live. And that's caused home prices to fall by almost a third. But since October, prices in other ...

Our correspondent in Stockholm has more. When two Swedish treasure hunters went out in June this year searching for ancient bottles of champagne in shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea, they found more than they'd bargained for. Dennis Åsberg and Peter Lindberg didn't find any champagne, they found something else. A huge disc-shaped object showed up in their sonar pictures 197 feet in diameter, as big as a jumbo jet. [Peter Lindberg, Ocean Explorer]: "I magnified it, looked at it and realized that this is very unusual, in my years as a treasure hunter I have many hours in front of the sonar, I've never seen anything like it." On the sonar it looked like a point of impact, as though something had hit the ocean floor, continuing 4000 feet, creating a track before it came to a halt. It had dug into the sea bed making a sand bar on its right side. The object is about 275 feet deep, the Baltic sea floor is dead with no underwater currents to create such sandbars. Recently another object was found about 500 feet from the mysterious disc. According to Peter this object comes from the same direction as the disc and could be a part of it. Sonar shows the objects are made of hard material. It could be something like hard concrete, granite or of ...
