I recently had contact with the director, Jim Yager, and he provided some background on this amazing work of art. Jim: "It was inspired when I saw Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu perform their choreography of this song at KQED for an event. It was one of those lightning strike moments when I saw the whole film produced in my mind's eye as they were dancing gracefully in front of a black curtain. It was just plain serendipity ..." "We filmed Hula SF just a few weeks after 9/11 in 2001. We had been making production plans since mid-summer, and had delayed the production a couple of times as their was so much fear and uncertainty in the air here in the city. We finally spent two days with the dancers in all the locations you see in the video in early October, and I will never forget the response from those watching along the sidelines as we filmed. Tears of joy filled their eyes as Mr Bennett's song permeated the air, and the dancers swayed and told the story with their hands. It was a great emotional release for all of us, I think, and a reminder that their was still simple beauty and romance in a world that had been so tilted off its axis. It was one of those pure experiences I will never ever forget. I figured it would air for a few months on KQED and then be forgotten. Amazingly, it's been on their air nearly every day in <b>...</b>

Hawaiians came with early European and American sailing ships to the Spanish settlement of San Francisco. Hawaiian people from those voyages worked at places like Sutters Fort and later in the California Gold Rush. The ties to Hawaii have continued throughout our history and are alive today. "Hula is the Heartbeat of the Hawaiian people" said Hawaiian Monarch David Kalakaua who passed away here in San Francisco. Hula is not about one person...but ...during Hit and Run Hula at the Fountain the Na Lei Hulu video guy decided to bring close-up video of beatutiful Hula to the YouTube audiences...he went "Off -the-Leash" so to speak...check it out. He is currently seeking forgiveness as he didn't ask for prior close-up permission....wish him luck.. On August 15, 2009, Patrick Makuakane and his Hula Halau, Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu made a surprise visit to Golden Gate Park bringing stunningly beautiful Hula to hundreds of unsuspecting visitors. Hit and Run Hula in San Franciscio was fun for the dancers as well as the audiences...there were a few upset security guards however.

Erin Sweeney, Julia Fennell, and Barbara Palacios choreographed this number, Rock a Hula Baby, to a remix by G3rst. They performed it, with assistance from Lori Lambertson, at a fundraiser for their halau, Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu, to raise money to send one of the classes on a cultural education trip to Hawaii. Na Lei Hulu I Ka Weikiu ran around San Francisco today doing hula dances in surprise locations. This was one of my favorites: the 4-way stop at Union Square. I love how the pedestrians are unaware at the beginning - and how fast the dancers got out at the end!
