Giuseppe Verdi - Nabucco - Overture

Nabucco (short for Nabucodonosor, English Nebuchadnezzar) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the Biblical story and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue. It is Verdi's third opera and the one which is considered to have permanently established his reputation as a composer. Nabucco follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. Its first performance took place on 9 March 1842 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan under the original name of Nabucodonosor. Conductor:Oliver Dohnanyi Orchestra: Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra

The definitive name of Nabucco for the opera (and its protagonist) was first used at a performance at the San Giacomo Theatre of Corfu in September, 1844. Nonetheless, a more plausible alternative for the establishment of this abbreviated form claims that it was the result of a revival of the opera in Teatro Giglio of Lucca.. The best-known number from the opera is the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves," Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate / "Fly, thought, on golden wings," a chorus which is regularly given an encore when performed today Verdi commented that "this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star." The opera was an instant ...

*************************** Go, thought, on golden wings Go and rest on rises and hills Where the sweet and soft Air of the native land is to breath! Greet the shores of Jordan River, The destroyed towers of Sion. Oh, my country, beautiful and lost! Oh remembrance, so dear and fated. Golden harp of the prophetic poets Why do you hang, dumb, from the willow? You renew memories in our breasts, Talking about the time that once was. Oh, like Solima to the fates You draw a sound of crude mourning, May the Lord inspire you to a concert That may give virtue to the suffering.

Va' pensiero... Riccardo Muti speaking about Italian culture, Opera di Roma, 12.03.2011

Muti said : yes, viva Italia... But, as we are in house, quite at home, let us speak together. "Va pensiero", in old days, was a political symbol. I'm not a politician but I can say that if our culture goes on being slain, our Italia will be "si bella e perduta". So, as the choir has beautifully sung it, we should join them to sing another time "Va, pensiero !"

Giuseppe Verdi "Va, pensiero, sull`ali dorate" Nabucco Napoli

"Va, pensiero, sull`ali dorate" from Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) (quasi the second Italian national anthem) Orchestra e Coro del Teatro San Carlo di Napoli Vittorio Gui, conductor Napoli 20.XII.1949 Va, pensiero (Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate - Fly, thought, on wings of gold, in English also known as Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) is a chorus from the third act of Nabucco (1842) by Giuseppe Verdi, with words by Temistocle Solera, inspired by Psalm 137. Known as Verdi's "Jewish" work of art, it recollects the story of Jewish exiles from Babylon after the loss of the First Temple in Jerusalem. The opera with its powerful chorus established Verdi as a major composer in 19th century Italy. Some scholars initially regarded it as an anthem for Italian patriots, who were seeking to unify their country in the years up to 1861 and free it from foreign control (the chorus's theme of exiles singing about their homeland, and its lines like O mia patria, si bella e perduta / "O my country, so lovely and so lost" was thought to have resonated with many Italians). However, much of modern scholarship has refuted this concept and it fails to see connections between Verdi's 1840s and 1850s operas and Italian nationalism, with the exception of some of the sentiments expressed in his 1843 opera, I Lombardi Verdi composed Nabucco at a difficult moment in his life. His wife and small children had all just died. He had contracted with La Scala to write another opera and the director ...
