Aug 11, 2011- Previous episode: Originally enroute from HKG to SFO the day before, we had been stranded in Hong Kong due to a "mechanical problem". Passengers were put up in a hotel. It was a hassle but the UA ground crew at HKG did a commendable job situating all passengers in an efficient manner. Fast forward to next morning, everybody boarded the replacement flight. It was delayed on the tarmac at HKG for 1.5 hours. We finally took off. Three hours went by, the captain announced another "mechanical problem", a failed hydraulic this time. An emergency landing at Narita was required. Upon landing at Narita, UA had the passengers wait 5 hours to board another promised flight to SFO. % slow hours went by; however, UA then informed the passengers that no crew was available to operate the plane. Ironically, the entire flight crew, minus the pilots, was standing by 10 feet away. I later learned all this drama was caused by a pilot strike. Thank you for nothing, United Airlines. That is the reason I refrain from flying UA again.
