Along with what may be termed the rise of Orthodox or Sunnite Islaam in America, there has also appeared in the Twentieth century a variety of cults and sects all claiming to represent true Islaam. Most of these groups have or have had strong nationalist overtones and anti-white sentiments in their teachings, which is not surprising, since the vast majority of those who enter the fold of Islaam in America have been Black Americans and the reverberations of white supremacy on which the nation was built, were quite intense throughout the country until recently. The earliest of these groups is the "Moorish Science Temple of America" founded by Timothy Drew from North Carolina (1886-1929). Drew renamed himself Prophet Noble Drew Ali and opened the first branch of his cult in New York in 1913. [EU, Essien-Udom, Black Nationalism, (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1962), p. 33] Drew taught that Black Americans were really "Moorish Americans" or "Moors" and that he had been commissioned by the King of Morocco to preach Islam to Black Americans. [Eric Lincoln, Black Muslims, (Boston: Beacon Press, 1961), p.52] He provided his followers with a Scripture in English which he called Koran but which was in fact the Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ written by Levi H. Dowling (1844-1911). Drew also included Buddha, Confucious, and Zoroaster among the prophets [Black Nationalism, p.35.] of whom he was supposed to be the last. What is the Nation of Islam? What do mainstream Muslims think of NOI? Who is Louis Farrakhan? Is the Nation of Islam a hate group? Brother Abdur Raheem Green was born in Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania. His father was a colonial administrator in the then extant British Empire. By the time he was walking the old colonies were getting their independence, and his family moved back to the UK. He was sent to a Roman Catholic Monastic boarding school, Gilling Castle and then onto Ampleforth College. It was there that he really started to question what life was all about and how much sense the traditions he was being brought up with really made. It was while he was working in the City (London) that his delving into every aspect of spirituality, philosophy and psychology came to a head. It was then when he picked up a copy of the Quran and upon reading it he was convinced that it was revelation from God, and thus started his journey into Islam. This was in 1987. Since that time he has been involved in letting others know about Islam. He is well known for his efforts at the renowned "Speaker's Corner" in London's Hyde Park. This was the show I could never forget and the one that made me view the NOI with even more concern for what they stood for than ever before. This show talks about the issue of slavery betweeb the Arab northern part of the Sudan and the native, African southern part. The things that stood out for me was how the NOI was out of their way to try and convince black America that there was no slavery in Sudan and how we should not concern ourselves with it. This was before any Sudanese issue came up in the mainstream media and of course before the even wanted to show the Sudanese government on American TV, (Jews) fearing that blacks seeing Arabs/Muslims as blacks would chage sides. Imam Qasim is our guest on today's show, Imam Qasim was introduced to Islam by way of the Nation in 1971. Shortly, after becoming Minister in 1975, he proclaimed shahadah-tain under the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed. After chairing the Fundraising Committee and Public Relations Committee of Masjid Al-Amin in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was unanimously elected as Imam of Martinsville (Virginia) Masjid of Al-Islam in 1977, where he served for two years, and led the Mayors Commission for Community Change as well as Associate Editor of the Danville News & Observer Weekly Newspaper. It was under his leadership as Resident Imam in Martinsville, Virginia, where he led a successful county-wide boycott against the sale of toy weapons in 1978.
