On Friday, as videos continued to surface showing the fugitive deposed leader being captured alive by a crowd of NTC fighters, the United Nations' human rights office called for an investigation into how he died. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reporting from the location of incident, recounts the moments that lead to his capture.

Collecting Libya's arms tough task for NTC

Last week, Libya's National Transitional Council [NTC] announced the liberation of the country from Muammar Gaddafi, but the difficult task of collecting weapons left behind by the conflict lies ahead. Hundreds of brigades, who fought an eight-month battle against Gaddafi's 42-year rule, have left a huge cache of arms, ammunition and other weaponry. But the biggest challenge for the NTC is to put all of the brigades under its command as Libya starts its journey towards democracy. Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid reports from Misrata.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley, reporting metres away from the frontline on Tuesday afternoon, said that the "noose was tightening" around Gaddafi's remaining fighters, but that they were waging a fierce rearguard effort, and had "a lot of ammunition and a lot of resolve"

Libya's NTC claims capture of Gaddafi son

Libya's National Transitional Council claims it has captured Mutassim Gaddafi, one of ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi's sons. Officials said Mutassim was arrested on Wednesday in Sirte, Gaddafi's embattled coastal hometown, and has been transferred to Benghazi. But as of early Thursday morning, high-level NTC officials in Tripoli said they could not confirm the news. A military spokesman said he had not spoken with anyone who had seen Mutassim. That did not stop citizens of the capital from celebrating, firing guns into the air and sounding their horns. Al Jazeera's James Bays reports from Tripoli.

Muammar Gaddafi: Obituary

A senior National Transitional Council official has said that deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds after being captured near his hometown of Sirte. Muammar Gaddafi came to power in 1969 in a coup at the age of 27 and went on to rule Libya for 42 years with an iron fist. He has left Libya in tatters and despite the vast oil wealth, a vast majority of Libyans still live on about $2 a day and 40 per cent remain unemployed. Gaddafi wanted to be the leader of the Arab world and modeled himself on Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. He published the Green Book which established rule of the people but in reality he exercised absolute power. The former Libyan leader was accused of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 in Scotland, a charge he always denied. After this Libya remained under internatinal isolation for years. When the uprising gathered momentum earlier this year he blamed everyone, from US to al-Qaeda, and called the protesters rats and cats of Libya. Many will remember Gaddafi as the leader who set Libya back by many years.

The streets of Benghazi are once again the focal point for crowds of angry Libyans - only this time they are protesting against the country's new government. For two days, tens of thousands of protesters have been demanding more transparency and honesty from the National Transitional Council. The demonstrators are infuriated by secrecy surrounding the country's decision-making and finances. The city of Benghazi was where the NATO-backed rebellion began and ultimately ended 40 years of Colonel Muamar Gaddafi's rule. What does Gaddafi's death mean for Libya?

The death of the former Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, marks the next phase for the National Transitional Council of Libya, forming a transitional government. However this will be a very hard to accomplish because Libya is a country with various factions. To make things worse, these factions are now armed to the teeth and they all want a significant stake in the new government. Its very difficult to reach a peaceful agreement when the stakes are so high and when all factions are heavily armed. The Transitional Council is unlikely to simply take control where Gaddafi left off. The next phase for the National Transitional Council of Libya is to make serious compromises and to balance all factions in the new government or face a new civil war among the factions.

Officials first said Gaddafi had been taken alive, with serious injuries to both his legs. The latest we're hearing from the National Transitional Council is that the Colonel has died from his wounds. One of Gaddafi's sons has also reportedly just been killed in Sirte. Fightings in Sabha, Libya - NTC seems to be losing another town (March 28, 2012)

The Western media seems to be ignoring the chaos that they have created in Libya. This video gives an interview with freelance journalist Neil Clark. "The fighting between rival armed militias, ongoing since Sunday, has spilled into the center of Libya's third largest city of Sabha on Tuesday. The country's National Transitional Council initially sent out 300 of its troops to calm the situation but the contingent had to be reinforced two-fold, Reuters said. However, there are reports that the national army may have retreated from the city. "We know that they are here to try to solve the problem and not fight," Sabha fighter Oweidat al-Hifnawi told the agency. "There are unconfirmed reports that they have retreated out of the city." "The ongoing fighting started after a man from the Tibu tribe allegedly killed a member of the Sabha tribe. The country's Health Ministry confirmed that most of the 50 dead, already killed in the clashes, perished from gunshot and shrapnel wounds. 160 more have been left injured."
