2010 New York City Marathon Race Preview

Watch more race previews at: news.runtowin.com The final World Marathon Majors race of the year is right around the corner, bringing a close to the 2009-2010 season and marking the mid-point for the 2010-2011 season. The New York City Marathon is a very flat course with the largest hills coming from the bridges as you cross through the different buroughs. Antonio Vega and Blake Russell have both dropped out due to injury, but there's still a great field that will be toeing the line by the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. Meb Keflezighi rarely gets any love from the media but is the reigning champion and is coming into the race in good shape. Injuries kept him from racing over the Summer but he posted a 61 San Jose Rock'N'Roll Half Marathon a few weeks ago and is feeling about as fit as he was last year. He won't have an easy win, though, as he'll be facing off against some very talented competition. Haile Gebreselassie of Ethiopia is the current marathon world record holder, having run Berlin in under 2 hours and 4 minutes. Kenya is well represented by Robert Cheruiyot (The Elder), who is a 4 time Boston Marathon champion, and Martin Lel who has won London 3 times and New York City twice. James Kwambai is the 3rd fastest marathoner of all time and Abel Kirui has run right around 2:05 before. Other former New York City champions that have are running this year include Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa and Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil. Homecoming Reception For Ethiopian NYC Marathon Winners

New York (TADIAS) - Firehiwot Dado and Buzunesh Deba were greeted like homecoming queens with cheers and applause as they arrived for dinner at the Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant in Manhattan on Sunday evening, following their stunning victory at the 2011 New York City Marathon. Firehiwot Dado, 27, won her debut New York City Marathon in 2:23:15, finishing four seconds ahead of Buzunesh Deba. It was the second-closest women's finish in NYC race history. "This is my first time coming to New York," Firehiwot said. "It's one of the top five [international] competitions. That I won prepares me and gives me hope for the next Olympics." She added: "My plan is to win gold at the Olympics." The New York media had shown up at the midtown eatery after learning that the local hero, Buzunesh Deba, would be dining there. She was visibly emotional as fans, friends, and strangers waited for a chance to hug and kiss her. Deba, who led Dado until the two overtook Mary Keitany of Kenya, said running in her Bronx neighborhood had inspired her to pick up the pace and added that she was pleased with the result because "my friend won." "We lived in the same town, and ran on the same team," Deba told Tadias earlier in the day. "I want to thank the people of New York and Ethiopian people and everyone that supported us," Deba said. "Frehiwot and I showed good competition and with God's grace we were victorious."

2011 New York City Marathon: Sights and Sounds Along The Route

Following the editing and selection from 187 different video clips, and as promised, this 9:32 YouTube video has been compressed to share with you the highlight sights and sounds from the 2011 New York City Marathon. I hope you enjoy the views as much as I did running through them. As John "The Penguin" Bingham so eloquently states, "On that day, we seemed to achieve what generations of politicians and philosophers have failed to do. With nothing more than our running shoes, we accomplished what all the wars and weapons have failed to do. We were, for a few hours anyway, a community of people whose sameness was more important than our differences."
