Bradley Manning for Nobel Peace Prize?

The name of Private Bradley Manning - a US soldier accused of passing classified material to the whistle blowing website Wikileaks has consistently made it into the headlines, mostly in connection with his trial. But now his name is now on a different list - that of over 200 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. His nomination was put forward by the parliamentary group called "The Movement" in the Icelandic Parliament. One of its members Birgitta Yonsdottir says Manning deserves the nomination because it's not a crime to blogger-whistle on war-crimes. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Scientist gets posthumous Nobel prize

A pioneering scientist who died just a few days ago has been confirmed as this year's Nobel Prize winner for medicine. The award for Canada-born Ralph Steinman had been thrown into doubt because only living scientists are considered eligible. But the committee said their decision stood leading to the first posthumous Nobel prize in half a century. Steinman and two others were recognised for their work on the immune system. The Rockefeller University, Steinman's former employer, said he had been diagnosed with cancer four years ago, but had managed to extend his life using his own immuno-therapy. Al Jazeera's Caroline Malone reports.

Physics Nobel Prize 2011 - Brian Schmidt

The Nobel Prize for physics in 2011 was awarded to Brian Schmidt, Adam Riess, and Saul Perlmutter for discovering that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. This finding was completely unexpected because it was thought that gravity should slow the expansion of the cosmos. The best current explanation of why the universe is accelerating is that there is some energy tied to empty space which pushes matter apart. This 'Dark Energy' makes up 73% of the universe but is very difficult to detect. Images courtesy of NASA/NASAimages.org and Maritza A. Lara-Lopez

Liu Xiaobo Exclusive - China - December 2010

The Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo remains in prison on an 11-year charge for subversion. In his most recent, and previously unseen interview, he discusses life under China's authoritarian regime. "The driving force for positive change within the Chinese political system does not come from the top. It comes from the ordinary people and it's unstoppable". Xiaobo discusses humanitarian issues in Tibet and China, the Chinese governments harassment of his family, and the possibilities for democracy in China. "I'm the one who has brought fear into their hearts. So deep down I feel guilt but sometimes that can turn into fear". He also speaks about what he sees as the growing number of dissidents, like himself, willing to speak out against the Chinese government. "I think the government is under increasing pressure. Today if they arrest and detain someone they now have to take account of the political cost". ABC Australia

Murray Gell-Mann Interview (1969 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics)

In this very intriguing interview, Murray Gell-Mann talks to us about the immense achievements going on in the physical sciences at the moment, and the extraordinary level of engineering skill and construction ingenuity required to achieve the latest discoveries in the field of high energy particle physics. Gell-Mann then tells us about his opinion on the Higgs Model for the origin of mass due to Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in the Electroweak Model, his work on finding higher order Renormalisation Group terms in the QED-Weak Model, which got the attention of Richard Feynman. The important relationship between theoretical and experimental scientists with these models. Gell-mann also talks breifly about the attractiveness of the Supersymmetry Model. Interestingly, Gell-mann tells us how the Los-Alamos Scientific Institute arose from the principle of The Manhatten Project, with the more important emphasis being on establishing relationships between people of different academic backgrounds and how the intellectual melting pot that arises is as crucial to 21st century progress as was the cultural melting pot to 20th century progress, on par with the scientific tools which came from The Manhatten Project. Murray tells us examples of the potential this mixing has, including physics professors becoming experts in the most unlikely of academic fields. Expanding universe theory wins Nobel Prize

Three US-born scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics after discovering that the universe is expanding at an ever-increasing rate. Saul Perlmutter of Berkeley National Laboratory, along with Brian Schmidt of Australian National University, and Adam Riess of Johns Hopkins University together share the $1.5m prize. Their study of exploding stars revealed that after the Big Bang, the universe continued to expand for several billion years, but at a slower rate than today.

Nobel Prize: Alfred Nobel, the Man P1

Alfred Nobel was born on 21 October 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden into a family of engineers. He was a chemist, engineer, and inventor. In 1895 he purchased the Bofors iron and steel mill, which he converted into a major armaments manufacturer. Nobel amassed a sizeable personal fortune during his lifetime, most of it from his 355 different inventions, of which dynamite is the most famous. In 1888 Alfred had the unpleasant surprise of discovering and reading his own obituary, titled The merchant of death is dead, in a Swedish newspaper. The obituary was eight years premature as it was actually Alfred's brother Ludvig who had died. Nevertheless, Alfred was disappointed with what he read and with how he would be remembered, inspiring him to change his will. On the 10th of December 1896 Alfred Nobel died in his villa in San Remo, Italy at the age of sixty-three after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. The Nobel Prize (Swedish: Nobelpriset) is an annual, international award originating in Sweden. The award was established in 1895 by the Swedish chemist and inventor of dynamite Alfred Bernhard Nobel. It was first awarded in 1901 for achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. An associated prize, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, was instituted by Sweden's central bank in 1968 and first awarded in 1969. Although the Nobel Prize in Economics is not technically a Nobel Prize, its winners are announced with the Nobel Prize recipients ...
