Nuclear vs Green - World - November 2010

It's an ongoing debate around the world - nuclear power or green energy? Nuclear developments continue to inspire global protests, but are the magic words 'renewable energy' really a viable alternative? We're told that today's nuclear plants are environmentally friendly, but they still "leave a 100000 year disposal problem". After Chernobyl, scientists worldwide are trying to develop a way to store radioactive waste safely for a million years. The intense opposition to this ambitious aim is clear: "humanity is not yet equipped to deal with this responsibly". But is nuclear power that easy to replace? In theory, if 1% of the Sahara was covered in solar panels, it could provide enough power for the whole world. Despite the vast cost and complex logistics of running a solar plant in Morocco this idea may yet have potential, but it isn't a fairytale solution. ORF

too weary for usual edits today... fill in your own WTF moments... Arnie Gundersen explains why a Global effort has not been made to extract the spent fuel at Fukushima SFP #4 sighting that it would draw more awareness that the United States and others have the same design on the Mark 1 containment design and the NRC does not want negative publicity. A new building material to absorb cesium has been developed, but they say NOTHING about the OTHER radioactive isotopes. Talk about the Pacific Garbage patch from the tsunami, and still nobody has plans for when it arrives. Here's a killer: Geoparks to show how natural disasters are going to be "preserved" to teach others about disasters... Meanwhile, get this, a low cost travel agency sends people to Fukushima and explains the radiation to them (of course they do NOT tell What they told the visitors) in an Effort To Increase Tourism to Fukushima! Stop Nuclear Welfare

Via The Guardian: "The US is facing a $15 trillion national debt, and there is no shortage of opinions about how to move toward deficit reduction in the federal budget. India commissions nuclear submarine INS Chakra-NewsX

India today inducted the Russian-origin nuclear-powered submarine 'Nerpa' into the Navy, joining the elite league of nations having such sophisticated warships. Defence Minister AK Antony formally commissioned the Akula II class Nerpa, rechristened 'INS Chakra', into the Navy at the Ship Building Complex here. "INS Chakra will ensure security and sovereignty of the country," Antony said after commissioning the vessel. India has earlier leased and operated a Charlie Class Russian nuclear submarine from 1988 for training its personnel on such warships. With the induction of INS Chakra, India has joined the elite group of nations with nuclear-power submarines after a gap of two decades. With INS Chakra and the indigenous INS Arihant expected to start operational patrols soon, India will soon have two nuclear submarines guarding its vast maritime boundaries. MSM: Nuclear Fear Mongering

According to the New START Treaty, Russia and the US have agreed to cut their nuclear arsenals to just above 1500 warheads each. So cutting the US arsenal of deployed warheads up to 80%, as drastic as it sounds would still leave the US with between 3 to 4 hundred of them. If you really need this put into perspective just consider the fact that you have politicians and pundits calling for a war with Iran over the possibility that they may one day have one nuclear warhead. And you have FOX News talking about a reduction in nuclear weapons as if it's going to lead to the end of America.

Iran agrees to nuclear talks

The drums of war have been beating louder and louder. From the beginning of nuclear predicament Iran has claimed their nuclear program is strictly for energy purposes. In an effort to avoid a possible war Iran has agreed to take part in nuclear talks. This comes after tough sanctions imposed on Iran by the US and the West. Earlier in week during the AIPAC conference, President Obama said to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that diplomacy efforts should be given more time, and they have apparently worked. Japan Marks Anniversary of Fukushima Nuclear Accident

A year later, decontamination and construction crews are still working to clean up the nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi Power plant. Experts expect the cleanup will take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars. The earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit Japan 's east coast last March 11th was one of the biggest the world has ever recorded, killing nearly 16000 people, injuring 6000 and causing another 3000 to go missing. But the natural disaster was eclipsed by news of the nuclear one, which was the worst since the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986. Japan's struggles in dealing with Fukushima captivated the world's attention for weeks, as a small group of men in radiation suits fought to cool the plant's damaged and burning reactors. 200000 area residents were evacuated. Polling shows public opinion around nuclear power also remains damaged, with the possible impact of natural disasters on plants and the power to contain damage still in question. Eleven US power companies are currently seeking license extensions for 15 nuclear power plants across America built decades ago. In the wake of Fukushima, the future of old plants, and the viability of new ones, hangs in the balance.

A nuclear scientist who supervised a department at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility has been killed by a magnetic bomb placed on his car by two assailants in northern Tehran, Iranian media reported. Is nuclear catastrophe imminent at San Onofre, CA?

Paul Gunter, Beyond Nuclear joins Thom Hartmann. There is troubling news out of Japan - where there's now more signs now that the Fukushima nuclear crisis is still ongoing. Sludge samples taken from Tokyo Bay reveal that radioactive cesium contamination has increased in some areas by 13-times since measures were taken last August. Health officials claim the radiation levels pose no immediate risk to the population - but could get worse as contaminated fish filled with radioactive isotopes travel up the food chain into the world's restaurants and dinner tables. Meanwhile, in the United States - the Associated Press is reporting that nuclear regulators have quietly watered-down US planning for nuclear emergencies. Despite nuclear plants all around the nation ageing beyond their recommended operational lives - nuclear regulators have reduced evacuation zones around them, required fewer exercises for accidents, and relaxed training for emergency officials. In other words, we're less prepared today to deal with a nuclear disaster than we were before Fukushima happened.
