Gattaca (1997) is a futuristic thriller written and directed by Andrew Niccol. Built around the controversial subject of genetic engineering and how it might lead to a socio-economic class divide, it follows Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke), an imperfect human who attempts to join a space mission by illegally exchanging identities with Jerome (Jude Law), a paraplegic with perfect DNA. How he does this armed with blood and urine samples is ingeniously shown by Niccol, who mints a new genre vocabulary with his absorbing, intelligent and suspenseful story. In Niccol's future society, a dustbuster is deadlier than a gun and wearing contact lenses means the choice between life or death. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world and who they are destined to be according to their genes. This thought-provoking cautionary tale is stunningly designed and has accomplished performances from Hawke, Law and Uma Thurman that do it full justice. Trivia The name "Gattaca" is composed entirely of the letters used to label the nucleotide bases of DNA. The four nitrogen bases of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) are adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. Jude Law's character asks to be called by his middle name, Eugene. "Eugene" comes from the Greek for "well born," which Jerome is. "Eugenics" (the science of improving the hereditary qualities of a race or breed) is the central theme of the film. I have always found Nyman's Theme from The Piano an enchanting melody, with a simple yet powerful feeling to it. It is familiar somehow, the melody and chords are inspired by ancient music which has been passed down from our ancestors, deep within our conciousness In this improvised interpretation I tried to bring out a more hypnotic emotion by using repetitive and flowing phrases. I hope you enjoy! visit my webpage - www.joolsscott.co.uk Michael Laurence Nyman (born March 23, 1944, London) is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist and musicologist, perhaps best known for the many scores he wrote during his lengthy collaboration with the filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Nyman studied music composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1969, he provided the libretto for Harrison Birtwistle's opera, Down by the Greenwood Side and directed the short film Love Love Love before settling into music criticism, where he is generally acknowledged to have been the first to apply the term "minimalism" to music (in a 1968 article in The Spectator magazine about the English composer Cornelius Cardew). He wrote introductions for George Frideric Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 and conducted the most important interview with George Brecht in 1976. Nyman, who had studied with the noted Baroque music scholar Thurston Dart at King's College London, drew frequently on early music sources in his scores for Greenaway's films Henry Purcell in The Draughtsman's Contract ...

The gardens of the Villa Medici maintains a XVIth century style. Ferdinando de' Medici bought the domain in 1576. At the end of the 15th century the group of Niobids was discovered by archaeological excavation. Ferdinando de' Medici bought it and put it at the end of a lawn in his garden. Although the gardens lost most of their sculptures, they kept their essential design until the end of the 19th century. The design of the plots in front of the villa was apparently modified under the directorship of Ingres. Umbrella pines were added. They are now a distinctive element of the Villa. The painter Balthus, director of the Villa (1960-1977) changed some elements in order to restore the Villa's old prestige. The sumptuous decor of Niobides unveils the fate reserved to those who dare to challenge the power of Gods. In ancient Greek mythology, Niobe, wife of the king of Thebes, Amphion, was the proud mother of seven sons and seven daughters. She mocked Leto, who only gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. They retaliated by killing Niobe's children with arrows. Then Niobe asked and was granted her request by Zeus to be changed into a crying statue. Six Celan Songs • The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi (2006 MN Records) is the 54th album release by Michael Nyman, who not only composed but also conducted both the works on the album. The first, a setting of poetry by Paul Celan, was originally recorded by Ute Lemper and the Michael Nyman Band on The Michael Nyman Songbook in 1991, and here the band is joined by Hilary Summers. The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi is a new work created with the artist Mary Kelly. This is performed by soprano Sarah Leonard with The Nyman Quartet: Gabrielle Lester, Catherine Thompson, Kate Musker, and Tony Hinnigan.

The Piano is an amazing movie- the cinematography stunning- like the piano on the beach and the sinking piano at the end. There is no praise high enough for Holly Hunter's depiction of Ada. Ana Pacquin and Sam O'Neill also shine. And Harvey Keitel- having gone native- by marking his body in the native style- gives a truly sympathetic and daring performance. This movie stays with the viewer long after it is over. At times I actually felt the dampness of the scenery... most of all it explores the regions of the heart- through the innovative music and the body language of Hunter. A film not to be missed by those who appreciate good story and good filmaking. Thanks Jane Campion for this classic.

From Michael Nyman's score to the film of the same name, this is 'The End of The Affair'. Nyman was nominated for a Bafta and a Golden Globe for this score (This piece remains the property of Michael Nyman, Sony Records and Columbia Pictures. No copyright infringement is intended.)

from "The Essential Michael Nyman Band" this is not nu-jazz, but is one of my top 10 favs

Nyman's "In Re Don Giovanni" is based on the first 16 bars from "The Catalogue song" from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni. In this mix, these original 16 bars from the song's opening are repeated 3 times (with the bass line enhanced in the 2nd and 3rd time), and while it fades out - Nyman's "In Re Don Giovanni" fades in so at about 1:00 only Nyman's work sounds. This is the original 1982 recording of the piece, Afterwards, comes a short explenation and a "Jerry Lee Lewis" style piano playing of the original 16 bar melody that was the base for the composition. Then comes a live recording of the same piece by the Michael Nyman Band - which is a bit "beefier" than the original recording.
