Occupy Wall Street protesters attacked and arrested at Times Square

Throngs of participants with the Occupy Wall Street movement marched to Times Square in New York City on October 15 in a mass protest. Once there, however, their peaceful demonstration quickly turned violent as cops attacked protesters with batons, pepper spray and . . . horses? RT marched along with them in Manhattan and collected some of this footage, which chronicles the journey from Washington Square Park to Times Square on Saturday afternoon.

Occupy Times Square 10.15.2011

On October 15, 2011, between 10000 and 20000 people came to New York City's Times Square for "Occupy Times Square," a grassroots flashmob event, part of the greater Occupy Wall Street movement. This footage was taken from the west side of Broadway, just north of 43rd street, around 5:30 PM. Later, the NYPD decided to break up the protest, brought in horse-mounted police officers, and arrested 71 people for no reason other than they were in Times Square.

Occupy Times Square

Occupy Times Square by Christian Papesch Oct. 15 marked a "Global Day of Action" called by the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement. Organisers say protests took place in 15000 cities worldwide. From Tel Aviv to Berlin, from Rome to Hong Kong, thousands of demonstrators demanded social justice and criticized banks and capitalism. In New York City, where OWS has occupied Zucotti Park for a month now, tens of thousands participated in diverse marches that converged for a final rally at Times Square. IPS correspondent Christian Papesch caught the ambience as the occupation took over one of New York City's most famous tourist attractions: Times Square. After being cordoned off by police in Times Square a group of us continued to challenge to be allowed out of the area we were being detained in, and to rejoin the larger group of protesters. One officer had an intensely emotional moment as the chant of "Fight crime, not freedom!" broke out. This video shows that the NYPD are not all against the Occupiers, and that indeed there are some that know that they too are the 99%!

At Occupy Wall St. a Veteran in Times Sq tries to explain to riot police that they're not at war

Contact me twitter.com This is the last half of the exchange. A veteran, Marine Sergeant Shamar Thomas, tries to explain to a squadron of riot police that they are not at war and they are not in a war zone and that they are needlessly arming themselves against children who mean them no harm. He tried to appeal to the riot police a few minutes prior but was initially mocked, which set him off on a tirade against the officers. He said his family had fought in the military for generations and he was ashamed to come home from Iraq and witness a police captain take down a young protester moments earlier in Times Square.
