Police release video of officer-involved shooting

just a couple of hours ago, police released surveillance video of a deadly shooting involving an officer and a suspect who kidnapped a woman in the trunk of his car. tonight, police say the video is an example of how officers sometimes have to use deadly force to save their lives. jeremy jojola is live in the newsroom with a look at that video. jeremy. a warning tonight for our viewers---this video may be disturbing for some of you. it's from a gas station camera capturing a suspect with a knife who attacked an officer. that officer quickly shot the suspect. this is surveillance video captured at the flying-j truck stop this past june. in the grey car, a suspect named julian calbert----a woman is with him.... and in the trunk of the car---another woman he kidnapped---she called police from a cell phone. officer aaron zwicky arrives---and orders the suspect to open the trunk of the car. his attention is drawn by the other woman---when suddenly calbert lunges at the officer's face with a knife. in split seconds, officer zwicky fires his gun several times killing calbert. this video was reviewed by the grand jury. the shooting was ruled as justified. "you can always try to tell people the event events happen quickly and people think there was another option. you could have changed your behavior. you could have had a different reaction. this is a perfect example of what we have to deal with and very often we don't have that opportunity." Results Released in Centennial Bridge Officer-Involved Shooting Updated: Sep 16, 2011 12:08 AM More than a month after the police-involved shooting near the base of Centennial Bridge in Davenport, officials release more information on the investigation along with video from police squad cars. It started with a shots fired call in front of the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds the first weekend in August. Both marked and unmarked Davenport squad cars followed a white blazer with four men inside they believed was involved. Police say they set up a road block at the base of Centennial and that's where the blazer eventually became blocked in. Dash camera video shows the driver of the blazer ram into a couple of squad cars. Officials say within a matter of seconds officers had their guns drawn and were yelling at the driver to surrender. Then police say the driver of the blazer cut the wheel toward officers and three of them opened fire. Officers fired a total of six shots, hitting the driver three times and allowing officers to take control of the situation. Police say the driver of the blazer is 18-year-old Michael Cross of Davenport. "In an interview with Mr. Cross he admitted it was his blazer at the scene of the shooting at the fairgrounds. He admitted he knew those were officers trying to apprehend him," said Scott County Attorney Mike Walton. Police say Cross also admitted to being under the influence of alcohol. A search found drugs in the car, but no gun. The incident at ...

Occupy Oakland: OPD Officers Involved in Bean Bag Shooting Reassigned

12/14/2011 The bean-bag shooting of an Occupy Oakland protestor last month has led to the temporary reassignment of the two Oakland police officers involved. Scott Campbell was shot in the leg with a bean bag round in Downtown Oakland on the north end of Frank Ogawa Plaza during last month's general strike that continued well into the morning. Campbell was documenting the riot police with a video camera when an officer shot him in the right leg. "I was looking through my camera's view finder, so I didn't see him raise the weapon, Campbell said. "All I saw was the flash and then instantly, just this severe pain." Campbell said the injury still bothers him. "I find it appalling that someone would feel justified, or that that was an appropriate course of action to shoot another individual," he said. The officer who shot Campbell, and his supervisor, Capt. Ersie Joyner have both been reassigned. Joyner told KTVU that they are actually on loan elsewhere until the investigation is complete. "That decision that night in regards to less lethal, it was thoughtful, it was constitutionally ethical... it followed the policies set forth by OPD," Joyner said. Union president Dom Arotzarena said people should not rush to judgment. "There's two sides to every story," Arotzarena said. "Once the investigation is over, we'll have a better idea of what happened." City Council member Libby Schaaf asaid the incident concerns her. "Everyone deserves a thorough investigation to find out exactly ...

911 Call: Officer-Involved Shooting

Police Chief Ray Schultz said during a news conference about two hours ago that the an APD K-9 unit officer shot a possibly-armed man in the doorway of a home on the 2800 block of Madison NE where he was holding two people against their will. The man shot by police this morning has been identified as 22-year-old Alan Gomez, according to APD spokeswoman Trish Hoffman. The chief said people who knew the victim said he had struggled with mental health issues. Schultz said police received a 911 call at 3:14 am from a woman inside the home who told dispatchers she and another man were being held against their will by a Hispanic man in his 20s who was armed with either a long-barreled pistol or a sawed-off rifle. Officers arrived at the scene and began to establish a perimeter, the chief told reporters. The SWAT team was en route to the residence when the suspect began to walk out the front door and back inside. At one point, the make exited the house and was challenged by an officer: he was told to come out and show his hands, Schultz said. He was holding an object, which is still unknown at this time until we get inside the house to do a warrant. As he turned to go back inside the house due to the fact that we did still have people inside being held against their will an officer fired his department-issued rifle one time, striking the male one time. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear which part of his body the bullet struck, Schultz ...
