As I said in the note to 'Tin Tin Deo', those who heard Jimmy Forrest in person said the most dreaded position on stage is being another tenor player along side of him. In this cut, standing with jazz stalwarts, not amateurs by any means, guys who are more critically acclaimed, guys who got more studio time, guys you've heard of--from Jimmy's first flourish, you can sense they just want to go home. He continues his solo showing his harmonic complexity, incredible sense of rhythm and groove, the ability to move effortlessly from the beautiful to the honking blues, and the ability to build his solo. King Curtis follows, gets in and gets out as quickly as possible, and then fellow St. Louisan Oliver Nelson takes over, using the Nelson method. Oliver wrote about improvisation, saying that you begin with a two or three note theme, and gradually build with more notes and volume. For years there were alto players in St. Louis who were disciples of Nelson, all the while never having heard Jimmy Forrest, who lived just around the corner. Upon hearing Forrest for the first time, they always asked why they hadn't heard of him before, shaking their heads in awe.

Music clips culled from the season 2 episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" entitled "Return of the Robot Maker" (1975) in which bionic man Steve Austin (actor Lee Majors) is crossing a boobytrapped field to reach the top secret Brahmin installation. Composer Oliver Nelson writes wonderful funky military fast-paced action-packed cues for this ordeal scene. The score itself is largely gloomy and electronic-oriented.

Music clips culled from the season 1 episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" entitled "Eyewitness to Murder" (1974) in which, at night and at the exit of a restaurant, bionic man Steve Austin (actor Lee Majors) runs towards a building to catch hitman John Hopper (actor Gary Lockwood) and then Steve Austin runs back to the county courts to pinpoint and to nail hitman John Hopper disguised as a policeman, hidden in the opposite building. Composer Oliver Nelson starts with a slightly ominous melody, injects a moody and fast conga solo at 00:07, switches to a melancolic and romantic piece made with violins at 00:12 and finally triggers the heroic music (first a bass guitar followed by a drum and a conga combined with a sad "bee" violin and brass) of the character theme at 00:26. Nelson continues the heroic theme at 01:57 and introduces a graceful and majestic piano at 02:14.

Music clips culled from three 1975 season 3 episodes ("The Song And Dance Spy", "Target in the Sky", "One of Our Running Backs is Missing") of "The Six Million Dollar Man" whose common denominator is that little action-driven jazz-funk-oriented piece with a dominant trumpet accompanied by percussions, bass guitar and brass. It was first composed for "The Song And Dance Spy". One last season 3 episode entitled "Hocus-Pocus" and dated 1976 uses that same bionic strain motif. The parking lot clip from "The Song And Dance Spy" starts at 00:00. The ordeal of the wet log clip from "Target in the Sky" starts at 00:29. The cross-country to the cabin clip from "Target in the Sky" starts at 01:19. The racing to the bowling center clip from "One of Our Running Backs is Missing" starts at 01:49.

download: shatnershairpiece.bandcamp.com Jazz great Oliver Nelson composed the themes for the first 3 seasons of the show, and this is my extended guitar instrumental tribute to some of that music which influenced me as a 12 year old guitarist in 1974. Obsessed with the show, and submerged in the classic funk/jazz themes of 70's TV, an era which has never been surpassed in terms of quality. I'm borrowing the bass theme, and improvising all over it. The original was mostly, as typical 70's tv music went, comprised of bass and string sections, no guitar. It deserves a rock version! This type of theme was often used during the extended bionic fight scenes, like this one from 'The Seven Million Dollar Man'. Oliver died after the second season in 1975 and the music for the show was never as good again. This music is still stuck in my head 35 years later! The show was cool not just for the slow motion leisure suits, but the MUSIC. I regularly recorded the show on my Panasonic tape deck, and would listen back to the episodes in bed, congas and bongos and amazing funk bass themes dancing through my head. It was great then, and it's still great today!
