Welcome to Ontario, Canada

"Welcome to Ontario" (c) 1995 Ontario, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation You would be surprised knowing the story of this particular video clip. First time I saw it many years ago (around 1996) in Russia when multimedia stuff on PCs like video was rare. At that time I lived in Russia and was just dreaming about going abroad to study or work. Since that time I kept the video burnt on one of my CDs as an example of how professional video has to be done. 10 years later, I "found" that video on the old CD and uploaded it to Youtube. The difference this time was - I am a Сanadian citizen enjoying living in Canada. The video clip, sponsored by Ontario province government and created in Canada, made its way from Canada to Russia in 1996, then it flew back to Canada in 2001 and 10 years later (in 2006) was uploaded to Youtube so you all can see it. Isn't it amazing? I consider this video clip as symbolic pride of the country where we can live freely and secure, pride of achieving our goals when we are really passionate about them. This is a great example of how our "vision" makes dreams come true... ;)

The Heartbeat of Ontario Horse Racing

In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, the following two and a half minute video was created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Of the more than 60000 people involved directly or indirectly with horse racing in Ontario, here are just a few of the individuals that make up the heartbeat of Ontario's vital and valuable industry. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has been falsely referring to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Slots at Racetrack revenue sharing program as a subsidy. His claim is that the Government has been providing a $345 million annual subsidy to Ontario's Horse Racing Industry. In a recent fundraising email to supporters, the Ontario Liberal Party suggested that they are "choosing to support our youngest learners over wealthy race track owners". According to OLG's financial statements, the Government of Ontario is receiving $1.1 billion per year from the Slots at Racetracks Program. The horse racing industry, which has made space available to OLG slots and allowed competition between the slots and horse racing at their facilities, receives only 20% of the revenue from the slots. The Government walks away with 75% of the slots revenue and host municipalities receive 5%. Both NDP Leader Andrea Horwath (ow.ly and PC Leader Tim Hudak (ow.ly have blasted the Liberals and this revised ...

ONTARIO UFO RETURNS: February 23, 2012

This presentation is based on a personal sighting I was able to record on the morning of Feb. 23, 2012. I have included both video and still shots of an object which previously appeared several weeks ago in a different portion of the sky. This new object appeared and behaved very similar to the previous sighting--with the exception being that after 30 to 45 minutes, it began to blink less often and then moved off to the south and out of sight. As usual, please leave your polite and insightful comments. From new casinos to online gambling, the OLG wants you 'all in' and able to gamble more easily and often. The critics say that the government is targeting those who can't afford it. The OLG says they will increase the $40 million they now contribute to help problem gamblers. On this week's Focus Ontario OLG CEO Rod Phillips joins hosts Leslie Roberts and John Tory to explain why the OLG is 'upping the ante' and why these changes are needed.

Exploring Windsor, Ontario: Waterfront with Great View of Detroit & Sculpture Garden

After a good nights sleep at Argyle Manor B&B in Windsor I woke up early on October 17, 2008 to interview my hosts, Dr. Paul and Kerri Thomas. I found out that Dr. Paul Thomas is a retired university professor in human kinetics and a renowned expert in ergonomics. Both he and his wife have been involved in competitive sports for many years and Dr. Thomas still coaches basketball at a local private high school and his children are actively involved in high level sports. Breakfast was fabulous and included a fruit salad, freshly baked muffins made from self-rising flour and ice cream (the flavour was double-churned strawberry) as well as a garbage bag omelette (omelette ingredients that are placed in a clear plastic bag and boiled in hot water). I had a couple of hours before my planned border crossing to Detroit, so I took a walk in the surrounding Walkerville area, a historic neighbourhood that was developed by Hiram Walker, the distillery owner of Canadian Club Whiskey fame. The distillery began operations in 1856 and Walkerville was originally a housing development for workers at his distillery. It also featured a number of upscale mansions for managers at Hiram Walker. The workers townhouses were built from 1858 onwards and are still in great shape today. My stroll in the neighbourhood continued to Willistead Manor, the original mansion of the Walker family that today is a city park. The mansion was built between 1904 and 1906 and was designed by renowned Detroit ...

Ontario SP50: "Hall of Fame Survivor" by Nutnfancy

The SP50 strikes a perfect balance in a large woods blade: it's not too heavy but its 23 ounce weight provides excellent all around wilderness performance. The full flat ground quarter inch thick 5160 steel drop point blade brings tears of happiness to my eyes. It is distal tapered, has great sweep and belly, and a strong tip. It splits big 'ole logs with force and has wedge-like authority in the wood. The SP50's almost 9" blade de-limbs, hacks, and even digs (!) with competency. The back spine is sharp enough for fire steel use and can hammer some too. The SP50 was tested thoroughly in both temperate and artic conditions and performed without flaw. Bigger, heavier blades might do some tasks better but they are a bit harder to pack up to high elevations using "man portable" systems. You might thank Ontario Spec-Plus upgrader Dan Maragni for the upgrades in the line. Great care was used in the creation of the blades: water jet cut WCI-brand US-made 5160 steel, industrial hardening, specific grind geometries, vacuum stress relieving, and laser imprinting. It's a lot of quality at this price point. It arrives sharp from the box too and held its edge impressively through testing. The Kraton handle absorbs shock, does not transmit cold, and is durable. It features a prominent guard on the bottom only; the lack of jimping and thumb ramp on this sized blade is a forgiveable miss. The MOLLE sheath is a big improvement over the Spec-Plus Gen 1 series and is lightweight and ...

This policy strips students of the choice to eat an inordinate range of foods, as a result students have been eating at off-campus sites which has led to as much as 30-percent losses to some cafeteria vendors. A subsequent loss entailed for students as cafeteria vendors generally turn over part of the profits to the school's principal who then uses it to fund clubs, sports, and support students from low-income households. The policy has put more of a dent in schools' finances than in unhealthy eating habits. Furthermore the policy which is designed to guide students into healthy eating is forcing them into the very option it hopes to counter. The general consensus among students is being demonstrated through the students who are voting with their feet. We will not accept being robbed of our choice. We have put together this video with the hopes of it gaining viral attention and thus pushing the hand of the Ontario government to review and amend the School Food and Beverage Policy. Ontario Gen II SP46: "Surviving Compactly" by Nutnfancy

In the realm of sub-15 oz quality non-stainless steel survival blades that cost less than $75, there are few players. This is a specific and frequently needed POU for me: a lighter weight blade with big capabilities in chopping, skinning, and wood splitting. I do prefer large survival blades when the propensity of use for such is HIGH. But usually it is not, especially when day hiking or backpacking as we often do in high elevations. Enter the outstanding Ontario Spec-Plus Gen II SP46. Thankfully the Spec-Plus line was not discontinued but expanded and improved. At 14.6 oz total carry weight, the SP46 was/is light enough to come along on some big TNP adventures. Though SAWC is a big concern on these outings, I still want a capable blade that can tackle big jobs and minimize work as much as possible. In testing the SP46, it performed fire preparation tasks, including heavy duty hammering through logs, admirably (cold weather performance not tested yet, surprises always possible). The full flat grind is a huge attraction for me as is the 5.6" leaf shaped Dirk blade: I love it. It is distal tapered, has great sweep and belly, and a strong tip. Its .1875" thickness strikes a good balance of weight, strength, and splitting ability. The FFG spits and chops with excellence, given its weight limitations (heavier blades will always chop and split better). The black powder coating seems to wear well. Roll Cloud at South Oliphant, Ontario - 5/27/2007

This weather phenomenon, known as a "Roll Cloud", stretched across the sky and spun in a spiral rotation on May 27, 2007. The cloud came in off of Lake Huron and passed over Chief's Point and our family's property at the southern end of Oliphant in Bruce County, Ontario. We quickly realized that this cloud was being pushed by a cold air mass as the temperature dropped from the low-70s down to the mid-50s in about 3 minutes. Chilly gusts of wind picked up as the cloud passed overhead.

CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY cpr CANADA ONTARIO TO VANCOUVER BC CP RAIL, VIA RAIL

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR; AAR reporting marks CP, CPAA, CPI), known as CP Rail between 1968 and 1996, is a Canadian Class I railway operated by Canadian Pacific Railway Limited. Its rail network stretches from Vancouver to Montreal, and also serves major cities in the United States such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York City. Its headquarters are in Calgary, Alberta. The railway was originally built between eastern Canada and British Columbia between 1881 and 1885 (connecting with Ottawa Valley and Georgian Bay area lines built earlier), fulfilling a promise extended to British Columbia when it entered Confederation in 1871. It was Canada's first transcontinental railway. Now primarily a freight railway, the CPR was for two decades the only practical means of long distance passenger transport in most regions of Canada, and was instrumental in the settlement and development of Western Canada. Its primary passenger services were eliminated in 1986 after being assumed by VIA Rail Canada in 1978. A beaver was chosen as the railway's logo because it is one of the national symbols of Canada and represents the hardworking character of the company. The object of both praise and damnation for over 120 years, the CPR remains an indisputable icon of Canadian nationalism. en.wikipedia.org british columbia RAILWAYS CC 1968 DON PUGH

Camillus Pilot Survival Knife / Ontario 499 ASEK Review & Demonstration

This is a review and demonstration on the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife. It's also known as the Ontario 499 ASEK. I've added a fire steel rod, paracord, tinfoil, a fishing hook and line, duct tape and reflective tape to the sheath to make it into a survival kit. This knife is heavy for it's size and is handle-heavy. The extra weight is easily justfied by the hammering capability of the butt cap-which is awesome! The blade is 4-7/8" long and is made of 1095 tool steel, which is easy to sharpen. The saw teeth on the spine work well on wire and nails, but fall short on cutting metal and plastic sheeting. The size of the blade and the protective metal casing on the sheath make this a safe choice for all skill levels. The Camillus Pilot Survival Knife is on the "must have" list of many survivalists for three simple reasons: It's a comfortable, safe, and reliable survival tool. Overall I'm very pleased with my $30 knife, and I'm looking forward to more testing in the out-of-doors. I just sold my Camillus 499 to survival instructor Paul Tarsitano of www.savealifeca.com. I'll miss it, but I know Paul will put it to good use.
