Venezuela Youth Orchestra - Bernstein - Mambo

I found a link for this video and I thought it should be shared because their's is a very moving story. You can see the BBC story here: news.bbc.co.uk This performance of Bernstein's Mambo is the best and most awesome I've ever seen. All musicians should play with this gusto no matter what their age and income. Most of these players are from the poorest parts of Venezuela. Truly Amazing!!!

Ted Weems Orch. - Heartaches, Decca 1938

It is our YT friend's request: Al HOFFMAN (1902--1960) - composer of this great American hit of 1940s. He was a songwriter in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, usually co-writing with others. Hoffman was born in Minsk - formerly Poland, now Belarus. His family -- like many other Jewish families living in Russia occupied territories - emigrated to the US. They lived in Seattle, Washington, and when he graduated from high school, he started his own band, playing the drums. In 1928 Al moved to New York City to pursue his music career. Though he continued playing the drums in night club bands and selling bagels door-to-door on Broadway, he began writing songs, collaborating with such other songwriters as Leon Carr, Leo Corday, Mann Curtis, Mack David, Al Goodhart, Walter Kent, Sammy Lerner, Jerry Livingston, Bob Merrill or Ed Nelson. In 1934 he moved to London to work on stage productions and movies, co-writing the hit songs "She Shall Have Music" and "Everything Stops For Tea". He returned to the US three years later. His best kown songs are "Heartaches" (1931), "Auf Wiedersehen, My Dear" (1932), and "I Saw Stars" (1934). Recording: Ted Weems & His Orchestra, whistle by Elmo Tanner - Heartaches (J. Kurt Elling - Easy Living - Jazz and Orchestra

Thursday April 17th 2008, Opera House, Sydney, Australia Easy Living with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Described by New York Times as 'the standout male jazz vocalist of our times', Kurt Elling's smooth four-octave baritone voice is matched only by his emotional range: from quietly crooned love songs to virtuosic vocal displayed. For multi-award winner and 2008 Grammy Award nominee, Elling, it's about communication. He says 'I want people to be surprised, to be moved, to laugh, to remember something important they may have forgotten, I want them to have what they need.'

Mozart - The Magic Flute - Overture (Levine/Met Orch)

I just love James Levine's conducting and those marvelous Met musicians for a "big band" version of this overture! "It was his bequest to mankind, his appeal to the ideals of humanity. His last work is not Tito or the Requiem; it is Die Zauberflöte. Into the Overture, which is anything but a Singspiel overture, he compressed the struggle and victory of mankind, using the symbolic means of polyphony; working out, laborious working out in the development section; struggle and triumph" ---Alfred Einstein. Breakfast in America w/Orchestra - Written and Composed by Roger Hodgson

Roger, co-founder of Supertramp, wrote and composed this song while he was still in his teens and before he co-founded the band. Not only was this song a hugely successful hit, it was also the title track of one of Supertramp's albums that went on to sell over 20 million copies. This song is awesome whether Roger performs it solo, with band, or with orchestra. He is a master performer. Roger is the composer and signature voice of many of the hits such as Give a Little Bit, The Logical Song, Dreamer, and Take the Long Way Home, to name a few. Don't miss your change to experience hearing the hits we all love. Roger's World Tour is getting rave reviews so visit his website at www.RogerHodgson.com to get the latest concert information, pictures, news and more... Swinging London: Ambrose & His Orch. - Too Many Tears, 1932

Bert AMBROSE (1897-1971), the bandleader & violinist, in 1927 he was elected musical director of the exclusive Mayfair Hotel at a then record annual fee of £10000 and whose outfit was by the early 1930s regarded as crème de la crème among British bands. He paid the best money and got the finest players, many of whom went on to become bandleaders themselves. It might be interesting to ponder just how many of the rich and famous clients who danced to Ambrose's sophisticated arrangements were aware that their favourite was the son of an East End rag-and-bone man. Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orch. - Rumba Negro, 1929

Bennie Moten (1894 --1935) was a jazz pianist and band leader born in Kansas City, Missouri. He led the Kansas City Orchestra, the most important blues-based orchestra active in the South West in the 1920s, and helped to develop the „riffing" style that would come to define many of the 1930s Big Bands. His first recordings were made in 1923, and were rather stiff interpretations of the New Orleans style of King Oliver and others. They also showed the influence of the Ragtime that was still popular in the area. They next recorded in 1926 for Victor In the more sophisticate style of Fletcher Henderson. By 1928 Moten's piano was showing some Boogie Woogie influences, but the real revolution came in the early 1930s when he recruited Count Basie, Walter Page and Oran 'Hot Lips' Page. Walter Page's walking bass lines gave the music an entirely new feel compared to the 2/4 tuba of his predecessor Vernon Page, coloured by Basie's understated, syncopated piano fills. In this time Ben Webster (tenor sax) and Jimmy Rushing (vocal) had also joined. Tragically Bennie Moten died in 1935 from a botched tonsillectomy operation. Buster Moten briefly took over the band, but many of its top members eventually gravitated towards Count Basie. Recording: Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra - Rumba Negro, Victor 1929

Ozzie Nelson Orchestra - It's Gonna Be You (1932)

Oswald George "Ozzie" Nelson (March 20,1906 - June 3,1975) was an American entertainer who originated and starred in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet radio and television series with his wife and two sons. Ozzie started his entertainment career as a band leader. He formed and led the Ozzie Nelson Band, and had some initial limited success. He made his own 'big break' in 1930. The New York Daily Mirror ran a poll of its readers to determine their favorite band. He knew that news vendors got credit from the newspaper for unsold copies by returning the front page and discarding the rest of the issue. Gathering hundreds of discarded newspapers, the band filled out ballots in their favor. They edged out Paul Whiteman and were pronounced the winners. From 1930 through the 1940s Nelson's band recorded prolifically—first on Brunswick, then Vocalion and finally Bluebird. In 1934 Nelson enjoyed success with his hit song, "Over Somebody Else's Shoulder" which he introduced. Nelson was their primary vocalist (and from August, 1932) duets with Harriet Hilliard. Nelson's calm, easy vocal style was popular on records and radio and quite similar to son Rick's voice. In October 1935 he married the band's vocalist Harriet Hilliard. The couple had two children. David, born in 1936, became an actor and director. Eric ("Ricky"), born in 1940, became an actor and singer. Ozzie Nelson Orch (Ozzie Nelson & Harriet Hilyard vocal) - It's Gonna Be You (1932)

Crazy Berlin: Lud Gluskin Orch.- Doin' The New Low Down 1929

Lud GLUSKIN (Ludwig Elias Gluskin) born 1898 in New York , died 1989 in Palm Springs, California, né: Ludwig Elias Gluskin. In late 1920s and early 1930s Lud Gluskin's orchestra was the only American band who continously toured Europe (though 'homebased' in Paris, France). While their recorded output was basically of the commercial dance band variety, nearly all of the members were primarily "hot" men and could play excellent jazz. The large majority of Americans in the group were from Detroit, and the Goldkette influence is evident.
