I digitally painted all 70 of the scenes in the video, which took around 50 hours of work (excluding a large amount of time planning and redoing the sequences). Though I had no prior experiences with animation at all, I really gave it my best shot and I hope you will enjoy my interpretation of The National's piece, Exile Vilify. I wish I had had a couple more nights of editing and rendering time... I do plan to update this to the version I had in mind sometime in the future. See the winners - www.thinkwithportals.com More information: I was trying to cite some of Portal and Portal 2's hidden subtext in this video. There are a lot of parenting and motherhood themes throughout both games. The same is true for this short. I like to leave a lot of this up to the viewer, but I'd like to think most people will see this: it is about how the tools that our parents pass down have the ability to either harm us or save us... the heartbreak of a parent having to let go, and how it is ultimately up to us on how to use what we've been given. "D, what does this have to do with the song?" There are moments of exile and vilify throughout. The turret is sent off on its own. The other turrets don't seem to like the party turret's differences. Chell immediately assumes the party turret is an enemy and casts it away. "D, why didn't you shorten the story so that you could do better editing?" You're actually watching a shortened version of the story as it is. The original version of the story had the party turret being tested for "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day, another common theme in the Portal games. It blasted <b>...</b>

My entry for the ThinkWithPortals.come music video contest for The National's song, "Exile, Vilify" All the images were digitally painted in Sai over the last week and a half and were compiled on Movie Maker. The video goes over the struggles of everyone's two favourite lab rats of Aperture Science. Enjoy NOTE: This isn't supposed to be fully animated. That was never my intention. If I wanted it to be animated more, I would've tried my hardest to do so, but the means for me to animate things the way I would've wanted to are limited for me here at home. My submission for the video contest taking place! This video is totally dedicated to the team I work with, after egging me on to make this and take it seriously. Music of course is Exile Vilify by The National and the images where taken from Portal, Portal 2 and my own animations of the comic, Lab Rat. Animations done in Adobe Premiere and some effects here and there in After Effects. Edit: Holy CRAP. The comments on this video have been so overwhelmingly kind... It took about 2 weeks of planning filming and editing and was the first time I have really used my camera to create a short film like I said I would. I loved Portal 2 and The National are on my deserted subterranean compound playlist and I had a camera. 'Nuf said. Some interesting facts: - I did this all alone - I had to set up a green screen without any clue where or how to do it - forcing a beard to grow in less than a week isn't as easy as it sounds - the 'Gordon-Freeman-Memorial-Beard' of the young Rattmann is there on purpose... - the lightning was done with two fluorescent lamps to catch the sterile atmosphere of Aperture Science - Avid Studio was used for the effects; however, an export to HD-material did not work out so far

This is my entry for the PORTAL2NATIONALEXILE contest. Yeeessss I know there are a lot of videos with game play or the comic, BUT this uses both!!! LOL I actually like the way it came out, which never happens. So ENJOY!!! :) ~~Explanation of Video~~ I don't believe this song goes with just Ratman so I wanted to show everyone and how the exile over the years affected them. I think that the main characters of Portal 2 are Wheatley, GLaDOS, and Ratman. Chell is just there to help view their stories in my opinion. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Wheatley- He was alone after GLaDOS was killed and spent countless years by himself. The loneliness warped his little core mind and as we know later he turns against us. Wheatley's "sucker's luck" is that he found Chell and she was able to actually get the portal gun. At the end of the video when we last see Wheatley he is reflecting on what has happened and he is in return sad. GLaDOS- It's not like GLaDOS really ever had a friend, so she felt alone and eventually she turned on her creators and killed them on with the Neurotoxin. While she was shut down she missed so much while her lab was becoming overgrown. "Does it feel like a trail?" addresses how maybe the tests also take a toll on GLaDOS in some way. Then after Caroline comes into the picture, she plagued and troubles GLaDOS' potato mind. GLaDOS at the end is in control and just waiting to move on to testing again even though now one of her greatest goals (Killing/Getting Rid of Chell) has <b>...</b>

Set to the tune of The National's Exile, Vilify: a single recently created for the Portal 2 soundtrack. I've loved The National since way back when I first heard Boxer in 2007. They've been an inspiration to me artistically, and I cannot express how much I appreciate them musically. When I found out they were doing a single for Portal 2, I was quite stoked, and immediately played through the game (JK Simmons as Cave Johnson was definitely the highlight of the game haha). The product of over two weeks of near-nonstop hard work, this is my entry for the Exile Vilify music video contest, as found on thinkwithportals.com! (I was dumb, and thought "Nah, I won't enter" when I first saw the contest, even though I had the idea. That put me over a week behind when I finally convinced myself to try!) There are over 100 individual images, all hand-drawn by me on Photoshop Elements, with use of a Bamboo Tablet. If anyone is curious, the 'story' of the video, or the 'main idea' of it was to use a messy, sketchy style (yes, that's done on purpose! :) ) tell the story of Portal 2, while conveying a sense of friendship, apology, and forgiveness between Wheatley and Chell, and tying the entire story back to Doug Rattman. I know there are some mistakes, but I hope everyone enjoys this, I put a lot of hard work into it! ^_^ I do not own Portal, Portal 2, the characters or the story, they are property of Valve. My entry into the Portal 2 music video competition. All footage is gameplay from Portal 2. A video about the life of an Aperture turret, with music by The National. This is my first game recording/montage/real video, and I've tried to capture the unceasing production and destruction of turrets within the Aperture facility, and the life of one lone turret, stuck within that loop. I used Portal's console to output the footage, and then spliced it all together. Thanks to Valve for making such an amazing game, and for The National for making such beautiful and moving music! "Our handiwork. Shouldn't laugh. They do feel pain. Of a sort. All simulated. But real enough for them I suppose."

My entry for the Portal 2 music video contest. There are so many typography or gameplay videos, so I decided to shake things up and make an original animation. I tried to imitate the hectic Rattman style of art and then juxtaposed it with more calm images, such as the stick figures. I'm a huge National fan, and saw them live a few months ago. My only disappointment was that they didn't play this song despite all of their fans screaming "Exile!" My entry for the Exile, Vilify music video contest, held by Valve. Here's what was going through my head as I was making this video: Doug Ratmann, a former Aperture employee, is trapped in the Enrichment Center, trying to escape the malicious AI that has taken over. His exile is slowly driving him mad, yet a ray of hope shines through the bleakness of the situation in the form of a young, headstrong test subject, Chell. As she struggles to escape Aperture (by playing the song), Ratmann tries to help her (by playing the violin to accompany her). In the end, Chell manages to escape by finishing the melody, yet the fate of Doug Ratmann is unknown. Filmed and edited by me. Doug Rattmann played by Sarah (HermioneJG3) Chell played by me. Portal 2 and related media belong to Valve. "Exile, Vilify" belongs to The National. I do not own the characters depicted in the video.
