"Offside" is a 2006 Iranian film directed by Jafar Panahi, about a group of Iranian girls who attempt to enter Tehran's Azadi Stadium dressed as boys in order to watch Iran's final qualifying match for the World Cup but some get caught and arrested. In Iran, after the establishment of the Islamic Republic, women are officially banned from men's sporting events on the grounds that there will be a high risk of violence or verbal abuse against them. The film was inspired by the director's daughter, who decided to attend a game anyway. Jafar Panahi asked each of the girls in the film to turn up with their own idea of how they would disguise themselves as a boy and what we see in the film was the girls' own attempts. The film was shot in Iran but its screening just like other films of Jafar Panahi was banned there.

This is a poem by Hossein Panahi, and in his own voice. It is a part of an album which was recorded not long before he died (it is believed that he committed suicide although it was announced on tv that he died of heart failure!). The album was published few months after his death. The album is called Salam-Khodahafez (Hello-Goodbye). Hossein Panahi was an actor, a poet, and was greatly known for his philosophical views. He was greatly influenced by Sadegh Hedayat.

Jafar Panahi's movie "This Is Not A Film" projected at Cannes Film Festival on Thursday 19 May .The film, "In Film Nist" in Farsi is about a day in Panahi's life as he waits to hear the appeal's verdict on his jail sentence. Jafar Panahi, 50, is sentenced to 6 years prison and 20-year film-making and travel ban , for making a film about post election unrests in Iran , which is named as "propaganda against the system" by Iranian authorities.

The Accordion by Jafar Panahi (English subtitles)
Shot on the streets of Tehran this short film, directed by Jafar Panahi, tells the story of two young buskers who play the accordion and the tablas to earn their keep. One day, while they are playing next to a mosque, their precious accordion is taken from them and a desperate chase ensues. Part of the 'Art for the World' collection this film is a reflection on the themes of tolerance, non violence and respect for differences as inspired by Article 18 of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion". It suggests that the future lies in solidarity over conflict. The short has particular significance given the recent sentencing of director Jafar Panahi to six years in prison accompanied by a 20 year ban on directing and producing films. The Human Rights Arts and Film Festival expresses its unwavering support for Jafar Panahi and his filmmaking colleague Mohammad Rasoulof in the face of this oppression and deprivation of rights. Jafar Panahi, Iranian Filmmaker, has been sentenced to 6 years of jail and banned from filmmaking for 20 years. He was invited by the Berlin filmfestial to attend as a jury member, but could not do so as he is not allowed to leave the country. In support of Jafar Panahi, the 61st Berlinale International Film Festival screened Jafar Panahi's Film "Offside", which won a silver bear at the festival in 2006. Many artists and politicans arrived at the red carpet with green signs of the green movement and pictures of Jafar Panahi. As the Ankara International Film Festival, we wish to express our sadness and outrage at the sentences handed out to filmmakers Jafar Panahi and his colleague Mohammad Rasoulof, who were both given six-year prison terms on Monday (December 21, 2010) by the Iranian government. Accused of spreading "propaganda against the system", Panahi has been also banned from directing and producing films for the next 20 years. We refuse to stay silent to this decision which in our view, is a purely political act which seriously violates basic human rights and we encourage all others who support freedom in the arts to speak out as well. One of the most influential filmmakers of the Iranian New Wave movement, Jafar Panahi was arrested by the Iranian security forces on March 1, 2010. After nearly three months in Tehran's notorious Evin prison since his March 1 arrest without charge, and after a week on hunger strike in protest of his unjust imprisonment, he was released from Evin on bail on May 25.

JAFAR PANAHI (iranian film maker)
Panahi was born in Mianeh, Iran. He was ten years old when he wrote his first book, which subsequently won the first prize in a literary competition.[3] At the same age, he became familiar with film making. He shot films on 8mm film, acting in one and assisting in the making of another. Later, he took up photography. During his military service, Panahi served in the Iran--Iraq War (1980--88) and made a documentary about the war during this period. After studying film directing at the College of Cinema and Television in Tehran,[4] Panahi made several films for Iranian television and was the assistant director of Abbas Kiarostami's film Through the Olive Trees (1994). Since that time, he has directed several films and won numerous awards in international film festivals.
