The new Panamera Turbo S is a unique combination of performance and efficiency, driving dynamics and comfort. The 4.8 litre, V8 biturbo charged engine delivers 550 hp (410 kW), ten percent or 50 hp (37 kW) more than the already very powerful engine in the Panamera Turbo. By the same token, the torque also increases from 700 to 750 Nm. In the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo and during kick-down in normal mode, the eight cylinder engine delivers fully 800 Nm with the so-called overboost function. The power pack is behind the new top-of-the-range Panamera's record sprint times. Thanks to Launch Control, 100 km/h (62 mph) is reached in 3.8 seconds; the top speed is 306 km/h (191 mph). Despite the increased performance, fuel consumption remains at the moderate level of the Panamera Turbo -- yet another example of "Porsche Intelligent Performance". In the NEDC the Gran Turismo covers 100 kilometres (62 miles) on 11.5 litres of fuel. Fuel consumption falls to 11.3 litres per 100 km (25 mpg imp.) when fitted with the 19 inch, all-season tyres with optimised rolling resistance developed for the Panamera by Michelin. The Panamera was never meant to compete with the BMW 7-Series, the Mercedees S-Class or the Audi A8, though comparos almost always include the four in a heated battle and buyers certainly do compare the four. But the Panamera has more spirited driving in mind, along the lines of the Maserati Quattroporte and especially the Aston Martin Rapide. Success from absurdity seems to be Porsche's new battle cry. The Panamera has been unbelievably successful in its segment, though it's hard to say if the success can be attributed to driving dynamics/power or the fact that rich guys who need four doors just love being seen in a Porsche. Admittedly, it's a tad unseemly with the bulbous greenhouse, but it's frightful like Posh Spice. You like to look, but you're not sure why.

I have filmed the brand new Turbo S variant of the popular but in some ways controversial Porsche Panamera at it's world debut in the 2011 New York Auto Show. It sports a 4.8L, turbocharged V8 and produces 550bhp; a rise by 50bhp in the "Standard" Turbo. Torque is also increased by 50Nm to 750 Newton Metres, but that can be raised again to 800Nm if you flick the Overboost button. The body is virtually identical to all other Panamera's. With its new four-door Panamera Turbo S, Porsche once again raises the bar for sporty four-door luxury cars by delivering ultra high performance and efficiency, sports-car-like driving dynamics, and first-class comfort in a purely Porsche package. Porsche will reveal its most powerful Panamera for the first time in North America on April 20, 2011 at the New York International Auto Show. The engine in the new top-of-the-line Panamera is based on the already proven and powerful twin-turbocharged V8 engine in the Panamera Turbo. The 4.8 liter, V8 engine in the Turbo S achieves a maximum output of 550 horsepower, which is 10 percent more than the 500 horsepower delivered by the Panamera Turbo. The torque is also increased over the Turbo from 516 lb-ft to 553 lb-ft. In the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo, the overboost function can temporarily generate additional torque with a peak rating of 590 lb.-ft. The power increase delivered in the Panamera Turbo S can be attributed to two main enhancements: new twin turbochargers with titanium--aluminum turbines and a modified engine control. Titanium--aluminum reduces the turbine and compressor wheel's weight, which results in a quicker turbo response that improves the engine's agility. The formidable powerplant that lies beneath the hood of the Panamera Turbo S is capable of propelling it to sports-car sprint times.
