Shark Attack at 57 metres in Papua New Guinea

Myself & my dive buddy were diving off Pidgeon Island in East New Britain Papua New Guinea. The two days previous we had been shark calling (rubbing a plastic bottle to create vibrations and sound that attract sharks) at around 30-40 metres looking for silver tip and grey reef sharks. We were pretty keen to see if we could get some bigger sharks and so decided to go deeper. I will point out that both of us are very experienced divers and fully knew the risks of diving so deep (and without the right kit too!). We descended fast down to around 57 metres, planning to spend no more than a couple of minutes there before continuing the rest of the dive as a deco dive. It was about 3 minutes into the dive when my buddy turned to see what he thinks was a big Silver Tip Reef shark (although there has been a lot of speculation as to what type of shark it was, maybe grey reef or possibly juvenile bull shark) charging in at him fast. He managed to roll over as the shark hit him and unbelievably he was unharmed. Apart from a severe headache (the shark actually hit him square in the head!) he was completely unscathed having not so much as a scratch on him. My buddy had said that when he saw the shark coming in at was going very fast but then slowed down just before hitting him, also it's mouth wasn't fully open and it made no attempt to bite. We think that what happened was that at that depth the shark would have been hunting and zoned in on the vibrations to go for a kill, upon ...

Ferry sinks off Papua New Guinea with 350 aboard

Rescuers have plucked more than 200 survivors from the sea off Papua New Guinea's east coast after a ferry sank Thursday with as many as 350 people on board, officials said. An airplane from Australia, three helicopters and eight ships were scouring the search area after the MV Rabaul Queen went down while traveling from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to coastal town of Lae on the main island, Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a statement. The ferry sank 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Lae and 10 miles (16 kilometers) from shore, the statement said. Australian Broadcasting Corp. quoted police in Kimbe, where the ferry sailed from, as saying most of the passengers were students and trainee teachers. The authority's dedicated search and rescue airplane based in the northern Australian city of Cairns had reached the scene by afternoon and another two Australian airplanes were on the way. All three carried life rafts that could be dropped to survivors in the water. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard called the incident a "major tragedy." "Given the likely very high loss of life here, I think when this news comes to the attention of Australians around the country they will be thinking about the people of PNG as they respond to this tragedy," she added. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said the cause of the sinking was unknown. He said more than 300 people were aboard the ship, although the precise number had yet to be confirmed. The incorporation process of West Papua into the Republic of Indonesia (between 1963-1969) was conducted in violation of international norms and law by the then governments of Indonesia, the US, Holland, and the United Nations. In order to eliminate the mistakes of the past, the present-day government of Indonesia shall start the dialogue with the representatives of indigenous communities and call a new referendum in which Papuans will be able to determine possible independence of their aboriginal territory independently and without fear.

Resource Rage - Papua New Guinea

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea has made a $16bn deal to extract the country's natural gas. His people have responded with violent protests, which could plunge the troubled nation back into chaos. "It's just like raping a woman. They're going to rape our resources." The landowners living along the length of the proposed pipeline have been promised huge benefits from the plan to extract gas from the Southern Highlands and export it to Asia. But they don't believe it and are up in arms: in scenes of chaos fuelled by a legacy of watching promised riches pass them by, they cut down power-lines, wielding guns and blocking roads: "You never listen - I'll chop you people". Ironically, most of the people living in the resource-rich Southern Highlands, live without power, without hospitals and without education. The MD of Australian 'Oil-Search'- which has a 29% stake in the project - agreed that the money the government has received in the past, "have not been seen in resource areas". Project Operator Exxon Mobil refused to comment. But the Governor of Gulf Province says he'll sue Exxon for over $2 billion for what he alleges are failings in their environmental impact study. With four dead, the former commander of the PNG Defence Force has confessed to fears that, "we are setting the stage for another Bougainville crisis in the Southern Highlands".

Using a mix of weapons, some of which date back to the WWII Japanese occupation, the BRA continue to hold out against PNG's superior forces. Meanwhile, the Bougainville people, whose villages face indiscriminate destruction, are under a PNG blockade which has cut off food and medicine supplies.
