Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Paratroop Drops

The Whitley was designed in response to Specification B3/34 issued in July 1934 and within two years the first Whitley had made its maiden flight and the first orders for the new aeroplane (160) had been placed. Although far more capable than the aircraft it replaced (such as the Fairey Hendon and Heyford biplanes), the Whitley was hardly a modern looking aircraft with a slab-sided fuselage and prominent, jutting chin and a very distinctive nose-down flying attitude. It was however, capable of carrying a very impressive bombload of 7000lb. The Whitley was retired from all front line service in late 1942 but it continued to operate as a transport for troops and freight, as well as for paratroop training and towing gliders. The first paratroop training course at Ringway was in July 1940 with dummy drops over Ringway and Tatton Park. The first live drops were on 13th July 1940 when RAF instructors made eight test jumps from a Whitley. Two were pull-offs from a small open platform that had been fitted in place of the rear gun turret. The other six drops were from an aperture in the fuselage floor. The pull-off method required the parachutist to face into the aircraft's slipstream and then release the parachute which immediately tore him from the aircraft. The slipstream caused somersaulting and occasionally the feared `candle' when the parachute failed to open properly. Pull-offs were soon abandoned, and jumping through the 'Whitley Hole' became the norm, but even this method ...

Declassified OSS Film of WWII Decoy Paratrooper 1943

Rare declassified film clip from WWII, produced in May, 1943, by the OSS (Office of Strategic Services - the intelligence organization that preceded the CIA.) This film clip shows an early version of a US Decoy Paratrooper, sometimes nicknamed "Oscar", being tested by the Navy Beach Jumper Unit - a specialized unit in charge of several deception projects during WWII. This Decoy Paratrooper Dummy (paradummy) was only 18" tall and was made of cast metal. It was meant to be used as a deception device to mislead the enemy into believing an Airborne Attack was occurring in one location, when in fact the real attack would be occurring elsewhere. The military hoped that it's small size would appear life sized when seen from a distance while airborne. However, these 18" paradummies were never used during the war because during testing it was decided that they appeared too small and rigid while airborne to look life-like in a combat environment. As a result, the paradummy was soon redesigned and a much larger version was developed (a four foot tall model that was made of a rubberized inflatable material.) This larger version, called the PD Pack, was eventually used in Southern France during Operation Anvil-Dragoon, in 1944 and again later in the Philippines. A third type of paradummy was also developed for use in WWII. It became the most famous of them all when it was used on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. It is believed these paradummies were manufactured in the UK by the Littlewoods ...

Mini Paratrooper Knife Review

Taken from the original design produced for WW2 German Paratroopers...The unique foldaway system encloses the blade in the handle and by lifting the latch and pulling the handle apart the blade is released. Close Length 5, Blade length 3-1/4, Blade thickness 1/8, 420 stainless steel Blade and handle. Link - www.battleorders.co.uk A pantographic knife, is a folding knife whose blade is opened by a unique scissors method. The blade has a slightly longer tang than a folding knife heel. The handle is symmetrically segmented and articulated to fold away on both sides to grip the longer tang. The manner is similar to a balisong knife (also called a butterfly knife in western countries) - with which it is often confused. Unlike the balisong knife handles that swing freely and independently, the pantographic knife uses a pantograph linkage to keep the handles aligned during opening and closing. The pantographic knife is very strong when compared to most other folding knife designs, being joined at several points and along several planes - this increases the force required to break the blade away from the handle. By enclosing the blade on both sides, double edged blades can be used. This knife is also known as a paratrooper knife, although it was never issued as such. The mechanism includes a collar that travels up the blade. This looks similar to an OTF gravity knife used by German paratroopers. The US Paratroopers of World War 2

I was bored so I made a tribute to the famous US Paratroopers of World War 2. The US paratroopers are probably the most popular unit when it comes to ww2. The most picked unit for WW2 reenacting. There are now about a hundred people on YouTube who reenact and collect 101st airborne. All over the world. Most 101st reenactors are from England and also many in the USA. The 82nd is also highly picked for reenacting too. The very first US combat jumps took place in North Africa during Operation Torch. The 509th Parachute infantry batalion was the first airborne unit to have a combat jump. I believe there was a drop to take an airfield and the other at a place called El Djem or Rommels railroad. The El Djem drop is unknown to most people. It was considered a suicide mission. 32 engineers of the 509th PIB descended from the 3 c-47s. Most were scattered and ended up using Guriella warfare tactics on the Germans for 2 weeks. Only 7 survived i think. The next para drops took place in Sicily and Italy. The 82nd airborne 505th and 504th pir took place in Operation Husky and Avalanche. After that was D-day when the 101st joined the 82nd airborne and dropped behind the invasion beaches in france. Not to long after paratroopers dropped into Southern France part of Operation Dragoo,. Later that year British General Montgomery came up with a plan called Operation Market Garden. It was a disaster and failed.35000 paratroopers dropped into occupied Holland to capture several bridges leading ...

Pierre Leemans - Belgian Paratroopers March

Pierre Leemans, Dutch: Pieter Leemans, (1897 - 1980) was a Belgian musician and composer. The Cleveland Symphonic Winds conducted by Frederick Fennell Born in Schaarbeek, Belgium on May 31, 1897, Leemans studied piano, harmony, orchestration, and composition at the Brussels Royal Conservatory of Music. He began his teaching career in 1917 at the Etterbeek Music Academy. At 22, he served his year of military duty and returned to teach music at Etterbeek until 1932, as conductor program director for the Belgian broadcasting company, NIR In 1934, he won the composition contest for the official march of the 1935 Brussels World Exposition. He founded the Schaarbeek High School Choir in 1940 and won a composition contest for one hit wonder songs three years later. From entries by 109 anonymous composers, works by Leemans were selected for first and second prize for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Leemans died on January 10, 1980. One of his best known pieces is Marche des Parachutistes Belges (March of the Belgian Paratroopers). While he was serving his year of military duty at the end of World War I, Leemans' regimental commander asked him to compose a march; it was begun, but never finished. Near the end of World War II, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. As the group commander drove him home that night, the march theme came back to his mind, and he wrote out all of the parts for the official March of the Belgian ...

Blood on the Risers (A Tribute to Paratroopers)

I made this movie as a tribute to our paratroopers. I tried my best to tie in the lines of the verses with the pics but there where just some spots where I couldnt find the right pics. I used pics from WWII to today. Song: Blood on The Risers, sung by the 82nd Airborne Chours. Lyrics: He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright as he checked all his equipment and made sure his pack was tight He had to sit and listen to the awful engines roar, And he ain't gonna jump no more. CHORUS: Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die Gory, Gory, What a helluva way to die He aint gonna jump no more. "Is everybody happy?" cried the Sergeant, looking up. Our hero feebly answered "yes," and then they stood him up. He jumped into the icy blast, his static line unhooked. He aint gonna jump no more. CHORUS He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock; He felt the wind, he felt the cold, he felt the awful drop; The silk from his reserves spilled out and wrapped around his legs. He aint gonna jump no more. CHORUS The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome; Suspension lines where tied in knots, around his skinny bones; The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground. He aint gonna jump no more. CHORUS The days hed lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind; He thought about the girl back home, the one hed left behind; He thought about the medicals and wondered what theyed find. He aint ...
