Travis Orbin - Periphery Playalongs - "The Walk"
...And the series continues. Much like the "Sinus" playalong, I had a couple of days in between sessions to spend how I chose and figured I'd rehearse this bugger a few times. "The Walk" is the first Periphery tune I ever heard, learned/eventually 'Orbinated', and is one of two tunes with which I was requested to audition. Of course, this was back in the old days when Jake Veredika was the vocalist; this version was released after I had left and features the mighty Chris Barretto. If I had to quantify, I'd estimate about 90% of these parts were composed between when I joined -- Sept '06 -- and 2007, with the remaining bits and some trimmings added sometime up until I embarked to record at Audio Hammer (that story is recounted in my "Project 15" video). Because of this, some of this stuff certainly feels stale and I'd probably do a few things differently. However, I consider these performances 'snapshots' of my progress from the past, both developmentally and creatively, only executed with my current facility. This video marks the 'debut' of the TRX ICON medium crashes that I've been using (18" & 19"), although I've already rocked 'em in three different sessions heh. I'd like to state a few things before I issue the usual disclaimer. This isn't a feud nor is it a contest; I am not trying to prove anything. If Periphery had not gone on to blossom into what it is, I'd still construct these videos. These are artistic statements; nothing more, nothing less. It's alright to <b>...</b>

Thus begins the long and arduous process of documenting all of my 'Orbinated' Periphery drum parts. By the way, the Periphery guys dubbed that term; I still say it, although I feel a tad silly in doing so, hah. This is one of the first tunes that I ever modified and it features a sensational performance by the band's first vocalist, Jake Veredika. "The Fast Ones" is now defunct and will never be released for various reasons. After not rehearsing this tune for the better part of two years I had to re-chart everything and re-work the motions (I spruced some stuff up). To my surprise, I did a pretty decent job in one take. This is the best camera angle I could obtain. The stack cymbal that's needed in my setup to perform the parts consequently raises the height of my music stand (which is necessary, since this tune feels 'fresh' again). Next up is "Juggernaut: Icarus Lives!" featuring Casey Sabol on vocals. I'm 'in between' sessions at the moment -- with a freshly-repaired EQ unit -- and figured I'd construct a Periphery playalong, since this has been on deck for nearly a year. When I was with the band, Misha expressed possibly opening a set (instrumentally) with this tune. I notated/composed parts back before I had Guitar Pro, so I had to excavate (lulz) my old Periph loose leaf charts and program them into GP to present an updated chart. The tempo change is kind of awkward and I made it even more so, but this is my video anyway (*said with a whiny kid's voice*)! Breaking it up also allowed me to tune my snare down for the second bit of the tune, since it's slower; it's super cranked in the beginning. As a side note, I think these are the best-sounding tom-tom tones I've yet achieved! Next is "The Walk" featuring Chris Barretto! Don't hold your breath though, as I've a pile of session work to tend to quite soon. "Though" was a brief instrumental that was to precede "Insomnia." It has since been dropped from the album track list so I don't know what will become of it. When I was in Periphery we always rehearsed this at 120 BPM for various reasons. It was pretty grueling to get it up to the actual performance tempo (130BPM). My programmed drums are not present in this track so you may hear the odd snare and such here and there. I decided to utilize my 'power piccolo' snare for a change. Notes: 0:02 - 0:17 -- Tom-tom melody complements guitar 0:52 - 0:54 -- This idea was conceived during a band practice to highlight a portion of the guitar solo 1:35 - 1:42 -- 'Half-half-time' haha 1:42 - 1:49 -- Ghosts fill in most of the rests, flams on the floor tom give the groove a bit of a latin feel 1:49 - 1:53 -- 3-16 metric modulation but the original snare accent and backbeat are still retained 2:13 - 2:19 -- After the wild fill-ins (which lock in with the guitar pattern) it slips into a 16th displacement. the cymbal pattern goes all the way around my kit, starting from the left (player's perspective) I'm not sure which tune I'm going to document next. I guess it'll have to be a surprise! This merry little ditty brings back memories of long drives to Columbia, MD for band practice, after-rehearsal dinners at Pizza Hut and other early Periphery recollections. It features Jake Veredika on vocals, whom also originally penned the tune. This is not my 'tightest'/most consistent performance by any means, but take a gander at some of the expressions that cross my face, haha. This is TOUGH STUFF! As with "The Fast Ones", this is one of the earliest Periph tunes that I worked on, thus it was initially transcribed/notated on notebook paper. I've since lost one of the pages so there are some 'updated licks' within the drum part. The 'tiger uppercut' at the end is dedicated to Alex Bois. Notes: 0:07 - 0:11 -- Cymbal melody complements guitar riff 1:34 - 1:35 -- Quintuplet fill-in 2:28 - 2:38 -- Chinese obviously highlights the guitar stabs 2:48 - 2:58 -- Solo-esque section around guitar part 3:08 - 3:18 -- Odd cymbal accent section; this is the second full take and the first time through I made it all the way to this section then forgot the order, haha... there's a three pattern on the china in there during the bar before the big final fill-in "Sinus" is up to bat.
