Motivating Physical Activity Behaviour: How do we separate fact from fiction?

In this presentation, Dr. Philip M. Wilson, co-director of the Behavioural Health Sciences Research Lab at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario, suggests that the some of the "best" motives for physical activity and exercise are when people feel good about themselves and what they are doing, when they are in charge of their lives, and when they take part in activities with other people. Speaking to an audience of 150 practitioners at the Alberta Centre for Active Living's annual Physical Activity Forum, Dr. Wilson talks about separating "fact from fiction" in relation to motivational theory, presents a range of relevant research, and sheds light on the effectiveness of different motivational approaches in boosting or maintaining physical activity.

How Does Exercise Impact Weight Loss?

Developed and produced by www.MechanismsinMedicine.com Animation description In this animation, we discuss the concept of physical activity and exercise as they relate to obesity. In humans there is a fine balance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Energy intake is in the form of food, and energy expenditure is in the form of the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. The difference between energy intake and energy expenditure is the net energy balance. If intake exceeds expenditure, then a net positive energy balance occurs. Energy expenditure depends on a number of factors. This includes the starting body weight, the basal metabolic rate and physical activity. With regards to physical activity, there are several key variables including the frequency, intensity, duration and type of activity done. Let us now examine energy consumption. One honey glazed donut is shown which has approximately 300 kilocalories. The energy intake from the consumed donut is equal to the energy consumed by moderate walking for 30-60 minutes, at 3.0 miles per hour. If an individual walks for an hour at 3 miles per hour. They will expend approximately 300 kilocalories, the same as what was contained in the consumed donut. If an individual walks daily for one hour at approximately 3 miles per hour. This type of activity would lead to weight loss. This assumes that the individual does not consume any extra calories and has a net negative energy expenditure. If this activity ...

Easy Exercise for Foot, Arch and Leg Pain from Fallen Arches, Flat Feet, Pronation

Easy Exercise for Foot, Arch and Leg Pain from Fallen Arches, Flat Feet, Pronation Fallen arches, flat feet, or Plantar fasciitis can cause pain and discomfort in the legs, feet, ankles, Achilles tendon, hips, and low back. In this video, Ron Vaughn, a sports massage therapist, and Christie Powell, a physical therapist, explain how the feet become pronated (fallen arches) and how some simple at-home exercises can strengthen the arch muscles to allevaite pain and discomfort. Discomfort when standing for long periods of time or when running or doing another athletic activity may be caused by weakened arch muscles. Many people are recommended to wear orhotics or orthotic insoles to get better arch support. While this can provide a temporary fix, Christie explains that strengthening those muscles is the only way to fix the biomechanics of the foot and really alleviate pain. Ron demonstrates a unique technique for relaxing the muscles in the feet and provides instruction that other therapists may find useful. Sports massage can be very helpful in loosening up the soft tissue that the muscles can be strengthened. Christie then shows an easy exercise that we can do at home to strengthen our arches and alleviate pain. The exercise is called Pen/Penny and requires only a pen and penny. This is a great exercise with lots of benefits to the feet, legs, and back. Ron graduated in 1997 from Austin Schools of Massage in Austin, TX, and also has a Bachelor's degree in Exercise & Sports ...

Easy Ways to Increase Physical Activity

The focus of this public service announcement is to promote physical activity in order to prevent health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle, such as heart disease and diabetes. While the message can apply to almost anyone, it is particularly geared towards women who may face barriers to engaging in 30 minutes of moderate activity 3 days a week. According to a 1996 report of the US Surgeon General, 1 in 4 US women lead an exclusively sedentary lifestyle. Additionally, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reports that the number of Missouri women hospitalized due to either diabetes or heart disease increased between 1993 and 2003. The video showcases easy strategies for incorporating exercise into everyday activities, including: gardening, parking farther away at the store, housecleaning, dancing, and moving while watching television. It presents a positive message to encourage women to engage in some type of physical activity every day, even for short periods of time. This method has been tested by the video creators—during filming, Katie raised her heart rate and broke a sweat! Learn more at www.cdc.gov References Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Tracy Anderson Method: Exercise Helps You Mentally and Physically

Read the exclusive article: www.tracyandersonmethod.com Tracy puts together some tips to help you work through life's daily stresses and help you improve your mood. We sat down with Karen Binder-Brynes, Ph.D to understand why; read more on how you can improve your mental and physical self at: www.tracyandersonmethod.com When you are feeling overwhelmed or depressed, exercise is the last thing on your mind. Your mood can be affected by so many contributing factors, and unfortunately, your fitness regimen is generally the first thing to fall by the wayside when you aren't feeling your best. Physical activity is so important in helping to restore your health and improve your mood. When you exercise and move around, you release positive chemicals in your brain such as neurotransmitters and endorphins, which repair your overall well-being and help you feel happier. When you are feeling saddened or depressed, you may also be compromising your immune system, which can have a lasting impact on your health and lead to more serious conditions. In recognition of domestic violence awareness month this October, The Method will be featuring a lifestyle video with the incredible Ariel Zwang of Safe Horizon. Its the biggest load of shit ever. Its just like P90x muscle confusion. Don't be confused into buying that bullshog. These are cool sounding words that mean NOTHING NEW. The Afterburn Effect is a cool term for what happens when you exercise. When you exercise you raise your metabolism, its called a metabolic debt, your body has a temporarily elevated metabolism and as a result of having a higher metabolism, your body burns MORE calories in subsequent ours. But this happens with any training, there is NOTHING special about it. What you REALLY want to focus on is how to MAXIMIZE your metabolic debt, or be EPOC. No I did NOT stutter. EPOC (Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption) is defined scientifically as the "recovery of metabolic rate back to pre-exercise levels". You want to be as EPOC as possible. HERES 7 WAYS to BE more EPOC 1. Focus on BIG movements. Compound movements are the most intensive exercises. Full body days, upper/lower splits, push/pull/legs, they all work. This means doing squats, deadlifts, chin-ups, dips for 6-8 reps and 3-4 sets. 2. Incorporate Weighted Circuits in Your Program. A circuit with weights basically means taking much ...
