The Doctor is Online: Physician Use, Responsibility, and Opportunity in the Time of Social Media

As recently graduated medical students are on the verge of beginning their residency programs, the Social Media Health Network is pleased to offer a resource to encourage awareness of and discussions relating to use of social media. In "The Doctor is Online: Physician Use, Responsibility, and Opportunity in the Time of Social Media" -- a project conceived by Dr. Bryan Vartabedian, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Texas Children's Hospital who blogs at 33Charts -- several experienced physicians who are also active in social media provide advice and insights to young doctors just beginning their residency training. Dr. Vartabedian approached us at the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media in April to ask whether this might be an appropriate project for the Social Media Health Network. Together we invited Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson -- a pediatrician blogger from Seattle who is a member of our Center for Social Media Advisory Board -- and Dr. Katherine Chretien of George Washington University to join Dr. Victor Montori of Mayo Clinic -- our medical director for the Center for Social Media -- to share their insights. Here is the video we produced with them:

Cole Porter - The Physician 1933 Cole Porter Sings His Own Songs

Songs Of Cole Porter. Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 -- October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born to a wealthy family in Peru, Indiana. Cole Porter grave site - Mt. Hope Cemetery Peru, Indiana. He lived at swell-egant addresses in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and the Berkshires, but the ultra-sophisticated Cole Porter (1891-1964) chose to be buried in his hometown of Peru, Indiana, with an unassuming marker. Porter was the son of a local druggist, and at age 8 was enrolled at the nearby Marion Conservatory of Music. There the boy first studied violin and piano and performed at recitals dressed like Little Lord Fauntleroy in a velvet suit with lace cuffs. Though one of his biographers claims young Porter was "no prodigy," he played with a vigor and zest that stole the show. At 10, he composed his first song, "Song of the Birds." Nymph Errant is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter and book by Romney Brent based upon the novel by James Laver. The somewhat controversial story concerned a young English lady intent upon losing her virginity. Porter considered the score his best because of its worldliness and sexual sophistication. The musical was produced in London in 1933 and received its US premiere in 1982.

MD workforce update 4/2012! Hawaii Physician Workforce Assessment

Dr. Kelley Withy of the John A. Burns School of Medicine provides an "early look" at trends in the 2012 Hawaii Physician Workforce Assessment. The assessment is conducted via a survey as physicians renew their 2-year Hawaii MD licenses. A $60 fee on the licenses funds the survey, as provided by the Hawaii State Legislature in an Act passed in 2009, out of concerns rising from a shortage of practitioners. The new figures are tentative as of 4/15/2012, but they are the first glimpse at data since the initial survey in 2010. Video by Tina Shelton.
