Pina Bausch: Overture to Orpheus & Eurydice (composer Christoph Willibald Gluck)

Look, there's not much I CAN'T find a flaw in but this might be one of those rare times when I'm struck dumb. What Pina Bausch did with Gluck's Overture to "Orpheus & Eurydice" is possibly the best thing I've ever seen choreographed to opera and maybe one of the best morbid performance pieces ever...and I like morbid. And opera. Especially chorale pieces and those are always morbid, I mean choruses sing on that fine line between good and evil. Even Handel's "Messiah" could be the theme from heaven OR hell, it's a coin toss. Have you ever listened to Mozarts Requiem? Well...it IS a funeral mass, so it is morbid in a sense yet all they are talking about is GOD and still one feels they are being sent straight to hell. "Consigned to flames of wall".... Bausch's lines are very Martha Graham in this piece and perhaps she meant it that way. They BEGIN Graham but end Bausch - askew and random, almost like afterthoughts. I found Pina Bausch to be unusual in a German art house kinda way when I first found Cafe Mueller, but I see such subtlety and understatement here that I have to wonder if she may have been a musician. Her choreography just seems so beautifully woven into the orchestra and opera, breathing within the fabric of it no less! I've watched some real crap on YouTube of "performance artists" trying to do some contemporary bullshit to "Salome" and of course "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Gianni Schicchi is a big draw for the juxtaposition-driven and it's flop after ...

Out of Context - for Pina : les ballets C de la B / Alain Platel

Nothing up their sleeves, and nothing in their pockets. With Out of Context, director Alain Platel aims to return to the fundamentals of dance. Starting from a belief in the human body as emotional tool, as carrier of memories, as raw material for living fine art. While Platel has flirted with the boundaries of opera over the past years, with for example vsprs or pitié!, Out of Context is not a music-driven piece, and also has no set or costumes other than those the dancers can fit in their suitcases. It is however no crisis piece. It is in self-limitation that a master first shows himself. The mastery of the dancers with which Platel embarks on this adventure is indisputable. Each and every one is an impressive figure with whom Platel has travelled far over the years. Danced and created by: Elie Tass, Emile Josse, Hyo Seung Ye, Kaori Ito, Mathieu Desseigne Ravel, Mélanie Lomoff, Romeu Runa, Rosalba Torres Guerrero, Ross Mc Cormack

Orphee et Eurydice by Pina Bausch (Christoph Willibald Gluck, composer)

Another amazing excerpt from the 2008 Paris production of Pina Bausch's 1975 choreography to Gluck's opera of Orpheus and Eurydice. "Choreography" has become too small a word for me when describing Bausch's accomplishment with this opera. This is a triumph on every level that actually surpasses the opera itself when in almost every case in history opera serves as nothing more than a Mephistopheles for the performance artist, literally the devil. Everyone thinks they can interpret opera with dance or some kind of movement when opera is already a full work, it's beyond full, it's bloated. It seldom stops when it should and is often more than anyone needs...all opera is done in 2 hours yet none are less than 2 and a half. When choreographers and performace artists play with opera, it's like a child playing with matches in a barn while having an epileptic fit during the worst drought in 30 years: no good can come of it. But one pulled it off. Pina Baush was one of the most complicatedly understated artists of our time (that made sense even though it sounded like it didn't). I didn't get her for a long time. I liked Cafe Muller because I thought it was like a Saturday Night Live sketch and compared to MacMillan and Bejart and everyone who butchered Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in the absence of Nijinsky's 70 year long lost choreography, I thought Bausch's was the least ridiculous. But it wasn't until I found her work to "Orpheus" that I was struck by her genius. Now I can see ...
