Nook vs Kindle: Battle of the Android eBook Apps

Both Amazon and B&N have physical eBook readers, the Kindle and Nook (which runs on Android), respectively. Both now have apps available free in the Android Market to read and sync eBooks published in the corresponding online store. Both are very fast and have the same basic set of features, but neither can read the other's eBooks, which is understandable, but a shame (we might talk about that in a future post). But which app is better? That might not be the right question to ask. BetaMax was technologically "better" than VHS, HD-DVD was technologically "better" than Blu-Ray, and 8-Track was "better" than cassette. But if you've got a "losing" player, you're not going to be able to watch the movies or listen to the music that you want because they aren't made for the "losing" formats. Apply the same analogy to eBooks and you see where I'm going. eBooks might not be available at B&N, but are at Amazon, and vice versa. Or, as I found out, the pricing may be better at one store than the other. But all that aside, let's look at the two eBook reader apps! Trying to stay on the "Android" theme, I went out and got a copy of Isaac Asimov's I, Robot from Amazon for US$6.29 amzn.to and B&N for US$6.70 bit.ly then show you the experience I had with each in the two eBook readers. is.gd

Windows Mobile 6.5 versus Windows Phone 7

For more smartphone news and reviews: Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile are very much different. In a lot of ways, they are complete opposites. In Windows Mobile, you can customize your experience with a custom ROM or interface, plus you can change almost any aspect of the interface. In Windows Phone 7, you are limited to the interface that it comes with out of the box...you can't even change the browser or the keyboard. Also, Windows Mobile is notoriously unstable unless you have the perfect ROM with performance tweaks. In Windows Phone 7, everything just works.

MicDroid gives you many options to adjust the pitch of you vocal recordings and gives users the ability to save recordings, make ringtones out of them, and even email them to friends. It's available on the Android Market for free, although there is a donation version for $2..99 (in case you want to show support to the developer). The app is purely for entertainment purposes and will probably result in lots of laughter (unless you can actually sing).

HTC Incredible S Hardware Review

The HTC Incredible S is characterized by a buttonless design, that is, until you turn on the phone. The buttons can actually change orientation depending on how you're holding the phone. The device is pretty slim, and has a similar backing to the Verizon Droid Incredible. The screen, which uses Super LCD, has better contrast than even the Desire HD, which also uses a Super LCD panel. The 4" display is WVGA resolution, so that is 800x480 across. Overall the device feels a bit cheap since it has no metal, but it's also quite lightweight. Ask Pocketnow: Episode 1

If you want a question answered in the next segment, just put your question in the comments! Here's what we covered in this episode: Shell Perington: Simple question: Why don't android apps include "close" buttons that will force the program to be removed from memory? Industrial Strength: Hardware-wise, the market is now saturated with "me too" 4.3 inchers. I know this is not where screen sizes stop!! I haven't been too excited about mobiles since the first 4.3" HTC HD2 (daily driver, hacked) and Dell Streak (waiting, waiting, waiting, disappointed....did not jump due to ATT + 1.6). I know Acer is outting a 4.8", but seems to be elongated. The 5" 4:3 ratio seems to be a perfect medium with both screen real estate and pocket-ability. Any forecasts for the next few months on hot mobile hardware coupled with enticing software to get me out of my boredom? Dual Core Streak 5 Opus?! Paul S: I'm still using the HTC Touch Pro 2 on Verizon, and have been holding out for an awesome phone all this time. I've been out of contract for over a year, but I don't care much to leave Verizon. I'm deciding between the HTC Thunderbolt and the Motorola Droid Bionic. The Thunderbolt seems to be essentially an HTC EVO on Verizon (with no real upgrades from last years technology), but the Droid Bionic seems to be a promising "future-proof" phone. Can you do a comparison and possibly a recommendation of the two (HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic)? daniel parenteau: Will the next windows ...

Pocketnow Throwback: HTC Touch Diamond

Website: pocketnow.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com Remember the HTC Touch Diamond? Sure you do! It was a very important device not only for HTC and Microsoft, but for the smartphone industry in general. Released in the early summer of 2008, a full year after the iPhone hit store shelves, the Touch Diamond represented an industry-wide shift from styli-centric interface design to finger-friendly usability. TouchFLO 3D from HTC made it easy to operate a Windows Mobile device with just a finger. Not only that, but it brought information out of programs and onto your main screen, so that you could easily check the weather, play music, call a contact, and more. The Touch Diamond ran with a Qualcomm 528MHz CPU with 192MB of RAM. Certainly, this looks a bit weak in comparison do devices like the Atrix 4G, which pack two 1GHz CPU cores and 1GB of RAM. The Touch Diamond was indeed a bit slow, and the resistive touchscreen lacked the responsiveness of the iPhone's capacitive screen, but it brought so many innovations to the table in a nice petite size, that it was easy to forget the minor inconveniences like low memory errors or the lack of pinch-to-zoom. Do you own a Touch Diamond? What about the phone impressed you?
