"We don't really want to engage in this sort of activity but we're not going to back down either," Assistant Commissioner Fontana said. "They've [protesters] had more than ample time to make their point in terms of what their protest is about and I think it's time to give the City Square back to the citizens of Melbourne." Greens MP Adam Bandt, the federal member for Melbourne, said calling on the riot police to intervene was a serious error by political leaders. Hundreds of people, including school children, are now lining Swanston and Collins streets watching the drama, with some chanting "the whole world is watching". "People will be arrested," he said, as protesters around him chanted "We are the 99 per cent". Earlier, organisers used loudspeakers to urge the protesters to call everyone they knew to join the protest before the 9am deadline and passed around marker pens to write the mobile phone number of a legal service on their arms in preparation for arrest. Mr Doyle said a fence would be used to try to keep others from joining the protest at the makshift camp, which he said had been taken over by "professional protesters" in recent days. While some protesters packed up their tents in the rain and moved on, most remained steadfast. Florida Trooper Arrests Miami Police Officer in Marked Car for Speeding
A Miami Police officer was arrested at gunpoint and charged with reckless driving after allegedly leading the Florida Highway Patrol on a seven-minute chase in his squad car at speeds that reached 120 mph on Florida's Turnpike in Broward County earlier this month.A highway patrol trooper pulled out her gun to arrest Fausto López, 35, after he reportedly ignored repeated warnings to stop. López could not be reached for comment. As of Saturday, he was still assigned to regular duty at the Miami Police Department, said Cmdr. Delrish Moss, "because at this point it's a traffic offense." The incident, first reported by Univision 23, started at 6:28 am Oct. 11 on the southbound turnpike at Commercial Boulevard, when a trooper, identified as DJ Watts, saw a Miami patrol car switching lanes in a dangerous manner.Watts turned on her lights and siren but couldn't reach López, who was driving more than 120 mph, the report said. At about 6:33 am, Watts caught up to López. When she pulled in back of López's car, she once again activated her lights and siren, but López ignored the warnings, according to the report, and kept going.Finally, at 6:35 am, seven minutes after the start of the high-speed chase, López stopped his car near Hollywood. An FHP video given to Univision shows Watts approaching López's car with her gun drawn. "She drew her gun for her own safety based on the actions of the driver," said Sgt. Officers shot several rounds of tear gas into the crowd, who were trying to reclaim their position within the city centre. This was the end of a police chase and the Sgt. doesn't want video coverage from a credentialed member of the press. The photog asks how far to move back but the sgt. says no you can't shoot it at all. Notice the road is open to traffic, there are people without a camera that are standing there and even some kids walk straight through the scene. The photog moves a block away and shoots from the next street over and that's when he's arrested and charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration....how can you obstruct from a block away.
