Ogier and Sainz testing Polo R WRC in Spain

The two rally aces -- Ogier is seen by many experts as future world rally champion, Sainz, with two title wins and 26 rally victories is one of the most successful drivers in WRC history -- covered around 700 kilometres, equating to about twice the distance of a WRC rally, without any problem in order to take new vehicle components to their stress and load limits and to thus gather important findings for the further development. Volkswagen will be making its debut in the World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC in 2013 and is running an extensive testing and development programme until then. "We have invited you to join us here in Olbia to announce Volkswagen's entry in the World Rally Championship starting in 2013." -- These were the words used by Volkswagen Management Board Member Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg as he declared Volkswagen's entry into the most versatile of the four automobile world championships (World Rally Championship, WRC). In front of 200 journalists he unveiled the concept of the Polo R WRC, the car with which Volkswagen will compete from 2013 onwards, together with Luca de Meo, Head of Marketing of Volkswagen AG, and Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. Luca de Meo: "Almost exactly two years ago, in May 2009, the most recent model of the Polo was presented here in Sardinia. Today we are proud to show you the hottest Polo of all time -- the Polo R WRC." For Kris Nissen and his team the World Rally Championship entry marks a new commitment. "We look forward to this new challenge and are working on this project with the same passion with which we won the Dakar Rally in the past three years," said Kris Nissen. After three consecutive victories at the Dakar Rally, Volkswagen has set itself new aims in top-calibre sport. Volkswagen Polo R WRC at Frankfurt 2011

Volkswagen announced earlier this year that it would be entering the World Rally Championship starting in 2013 with the Polo R, and we got our first glimpse of the race car here in Frankfurt. While it's easy to see the similarities to the road version, the Polo R WRC has been transformed into an all-out rally car with widened fenders, a fully stripped and caged interior, and plenty of carbon fiber on the body. Under the hood is a race-prepped version of Volkswagen's 1.6-liter STI engine producing something in the range of 300 horsepower. 300 HP! This is a Polo, people. Volkswagen is no stranger to rally racing, having won the 1986 Group A championship with a Golf GTI 16V and more recently finding success in the Australian and Finnish Rally Car Championships. VW also hopes to transfer some of the knowledge gained from competing in the Dakar Rally, which it has won the past three years. We'll have to wait and see if the Polo R WRC finds similar success in motorsports, but with Volkswagen's backing, we wouldn't be surprised to see it on the podium soon enough. That won't be for a few years, though, so in the meantime, check out our photos of the car on display in Frankfurt.

Volkswagen Motorsport | Carlos Sainz and Sebastein Ogier testing Polo R WRC in Spain (Almeria)

World Rally Championship royalty sampled Volkswagen's new-for-2013 Polo R WRC when Carlos Sainz, known affectionately as The King, took part in the German make's test in Spain recently. Sainz, a two-time WRC champion and an advisor to Volkswagen, completed initial testing of the prototype Polo back in November. During a recent test in his homeland, the 49-year-old accompanied Volkswagen's lead driver Sebastien Ogier during a number of runs in the latest version of the car before getting behind the wheel himself. "During my active days [in the WRC] I drove thousands of test kilometres and hope to be able to support Volkswagen with my experience," said Sainz. "I have a lot of confidence in the squad and the Polo R WRC will no doubt be a big hit. But we mustn't forget that 2013 will be the Polo's first year in the WRC whereas the competition will have been active there for many years." Volkswagen Motorsport chief Kris Nissen said: "The test in Spain served to simulate the roughest WRC sections and to take the car to its load and stress limits. Particularly chassis components such as the hub carriers, dampers and suspension components were successfully tested in the limit range. Carlos Sainz and Sebastien Ogier are working together extremely well forming a very good combination. They respect each other without any rivalry and are purposefully driving the project forwards. Our next step will be to run further tests on [Tarmac] in order to complete our specifications book and ...

2013 Volkswagen Polo R WRC

A new Volkswagen. -Info- Rumours have been circulating for some time now about Volkswagen's desire to join the World Rally Championship. As their plans have seemed more and more certain the only speculation that remained was whether the car they chose to compete in the WRC would be the Scirocco or the Polo. Speculate no more, because here is Volkswagen's official entry -- the Polo R WRC. Starting in 2013, the Polo R will take to the rally stages of the world and aim to repeat the success of Volkswagen's Dakar Rally team, who won the gruelling event three years in a row. 2012 will see an extensive testing program to ensure the Polo is ready for its first competitive year. Powered by a 1.6-litre TSI engine that uses turbocharging and direct injection to produce nearly 300bhp and 260lb/ft, the four-wheel drive Polo R will join the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3 and Mini Countryman. The swollen body work covers a wider track, while the huge rear wing and front spoiler add much needed downforce to help keep the Polo on the straight and narrow. The timing is great for Volkswagen, as the experience of the Dakar Rally team can now be focused on the new target of success in the WRC. The Polo R WRC will be competing as a full factory team, allowing the Wolfsburg-based squad to make the most of the experience and facilities which have been built over the past few years. With the Dakar team winding down for 2012, there's a good chance that double World Rally champion Carlos ...
