Guys get eaten, the cyclops gets blinded, you know the story. In case anyone's interested, this was done with some plain letter-size paper, some el cheapo watercolors, a scanner, along with Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. This is what can happen when you let young people do animation. Even if they frequently refuse to go to bed.

Polyphemus Caterpillar Cocooning - Time Lapse
My daughters are raising a bunch of Polyphemus caterpillars for school. We hatched them, fed them, and now they are starting to cocoon! It's been a neat experience. I hope to do a time lapse of the emergence as well, so stay tuned!

Antheraea polyphemus - Mating / Oviposition
A female Poly I found scents and attracts a male (after attracting four others others on different nights) and finally mates 8 days after eclosing. The rainbow lines do not show up on my camera they must be a conversion issue. The night shots were taken by an old VHS Sony camcorder, the ovipositing shots a Panasonic SDR-S26. This project is expected to be completed summer of 2011.

Acis and Galatea- Polyphemus: 'O ruddier than the cherry' by GF Handel
In 1717, in addition to writing operas for the London theaters, Handel went to work for the Duke of Chandos at Cannons, his splendid country house in Middlesex, north of London. Here he wrote a magnificent set of anthems for his employer, now known as the Chandos Galatea, to a libretto by John Gay. This was produced at Cannons in 1718. It tells the usual shepherd-meets-shepherdess story, with the difference that the shepherd Acis is killed by a rock, thrown by the jealous one-eyed, Cyclops Polyphemus, and transformed, in the manner of Classical mythology, into a limpid stream. Polyphemus' lustful song 'O ruddier than the cherry' quickly became drawing-room standard and is still a favourite with basses today, a magically conceived aria in this pastoral mini-tragedy. Polyphemus sings: "O ruddier than the cherry, O sweeter than the berry, O nymph more bright Than moonshine night, Like kidlings blithe and merry. The Very Hungry Caterpillar! (Antheraea Polyphemus Moth Caterpillar)
I was going to let our two cats Beatrix and Tobias out for a little sun this afternoon, until I discovered the fat and cozy big green caterpillar, similar to the looks of Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" hanging out in the backyard! Not knowing what type of creature he was I crowned him "The caterpillar of the future" How amazing it was to meet the little guy. I didn't want the cats to hurt him, so I let him carry on his merry little way. I hope he finds all the apples and oranges and everything else he needs to turn into a beautiful butterfly... or moth in this case ;) Did you know that the wingspan of these particular moths (also known as silk moths) can be 6 inches long or 15 cm? Insane big! :D Elle♥

Spore Polyphemus
The Cyclopean son of the Sea god Poseidon, Polyphemus lived in a cave on an island in the Mediterranean where many other Cyclopes lived. Polyphemus kept a flock of sheep for whom he cared for greatly, despite him being a fearsome monster. A prophet Cyclops named Telemus lived on Polyphemus's island, who warned him that he would lose his sight to a man named Odysseus. When Odysseus and his men were sailing home to Ithaca, they landed on the Cyclopes' island, where went into Polyphemus's cave and waited for him (unaware he was a Cyclops) to come home. Polyphemus came back to the cave and asked if the men were travelers or pirates. Odysseus told him that they were sailing home from Troy. Polyphemus then grabbed two of Odysseus's men and smashed them against the rocks, splattering their brains on the cave floor, and ate the men. Odysseus was tempted to kill the Cyclops in his sleep, but realized that then they wouldn't be able to push aside the boulder which Polyphemus used as his door. The next day, after rolling aside the boulder and letting his sheep out, Polyphemus left the cave and rolled the boulder back in front of the cave, trapping Odysseus and his men again. While waiting for the giant's return, Odysseus thought up a plan. Him and his men sharpened Polyphemus's huge olive tree branch until he and his sheep came back. The Cyclops then killed and ate two more of Odysseus's men in the same manner. Odysseus walked over to Polyphemus and offered him some strong wine <b>...</b>
