The Vienna Circle and Logical Positivism

This clip briefly describes the rise of the Vienna Circle and the ideas of logical positivism. The Vienna Circle had various members, however, this clip only mentions Moritz Schlick, Rudolph Carnap, Otto Neurath, and Kurt Gödel. It then briefly discusses the relationship between logical positivism and Ludwig Wittgenstein's early work (exemplified in his "Tractatus-Logico Philosophicus"). The main thought behind logical positivism was the notion that all worthwhile knowledge is scientific knowledge. This can be best expressed in their "Verificationist Criterion of Meaning." Simply put, there exist only two types of genuine knowledge: analytic truths that are true by definition (ie mathematics and logic), and synthetic truths that are true by repeatable empirical observations (ie physics, biology, chemistry, etc.). All statements that fail to fit into these two categories (ie metaphysical, ethical, aesthetic, etc.) are seen as emotive and cognitively meaningless. Another signature aspect of logical positivism is a general disdain towards metaphysical speculation. While some positivists thought we ought to suspend judgment concerning metaphysics entirely, others felt provisional commitment to a metaphysics to ground the empirical sciences was justified. Consequently, a few promoted physicalism as a metaphysical theory that could provide unification to all of the natural sciences. The clip also mentions Otto Neurath's idea of building a ship while at sea as a metaphor for an <b>...</b>

Epistemological Objection to God: Verificationism and Logical Positivism and Falsificationism

reasonablefaith.org - Epistemological Objection to God Verificationism and Logical Positivism and Falsificationism. Is science the only way to know truth? Are the human five senses the only way to determine reality? If you answered "yes" to these questions you have been influenced by a school of thought known as verificationism. Many atheists and skeptics like Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, and Stephen Hawking (whether they know it or not) have been using logical positivism in their style of thinking. William Lane Craig shows how verificationism is too restrictive and self-contradictory. This is an entirely new description of the universe from the point of view of extraterrestrial intelligence." This book is vast and requires careful study. It touches on a variety of themes, including a re-envisioning of the history of the cosmos, the nature of revelation in history, and the descent of divine knowledge as the means of renewing and evolving the consciousness of humanity, all as viewed from the lens of the Law of Time and the synchronic order. Of special note are: The treatment of the 13.7 billion year history of the present cycle of cosmic evolution; the description and analysis of the principle spiritual messengers of history; and, most significantly, the presentation of cosmic science as a startlingly new (extra-terrestrial) descent or revelation of knowledge, including as an appendix, a complete translation of the original treatise, "An Introduction to Cosmic Science." Dear Positivists: Who's The Quantum Mystic Now?

Positivists believe that the very REAL effects seen in quantum mechanics experiments are caused by NOTHING MORE than imaginary subjective processes that go on inside of their heads. Why? Well it's simple, we can never see the wave-function or the collapse directly, even though we can deduce both indirectly, and so therefore they don't really exist. ERR WRONG! Hmm we don't see it so it doesn't exist. (Just like on CSI how there never are any actual murders because we don't actually see them happening -just dead bodies that magically show up with all of the appearances of having been murdered. The fundamental flaw in thinking that lead to this silliness is positivism -the (ironically) philosophical belief that philosophy doesn't matter, and that anything that is not directly observed is just "metaphysics." This includes the philosophic doctrine of REALISM -which we now have to jettison because it is only "metaphysics" and not empirically observed to exist. Only the REAL world it doesn't work that way. Science was birthed by philosophy and philosophy includes realism. YES REALISM REALLY IS REAL! Whoda thunk? By ditching philosophy as "metaphysics" one also ditches realism and with it the belief that the very real experimental results of quantum physics experiments actually correspond to things that happen in objective reality and not just in our heads. As a result of this thinking, since we never see the mechanism behind it it must only happen in our heads. Hmm that sounds <b>...</b>

Defending the Indefensible: Part 1, Logical Positivism

'Defending the Indefensible' is what I hope is an ironic title for a series focusing mainly on logical positivism and the theories of mind, meaning, and external world that follow from it. In this first video, I'm focusing on the verification principle, an important part of the movement, and why I feel I am justified in using the principle to establish truth value. Definitions: Empiricism: The view that experience, especially of the senses, is the only source of knowledge. Metaphysics: A priori speculation upon questions that are unanswerable to scientific observation, analysis, or experiment. zB: God, external world. Truth value: The possibility of being EITHER true OR false. Statement: Any utterance whatsoever. Any sound, any sentence, and any principle. Proposition: A statement which has truth value. A priori: Knowledge which can be established independently of experience or reasoning from experience. Analytic proposition: A proposition whose truth depends solely on the meaning of its terms. Synthetic proposition: Any non-analytic proposition. If any more definitions of philosophical terms are required, or I'm using an incorrect definition, please let me know. Otherwise, enjoy!

LAW121 - Positivist Legal Theory

In contrast to natural law theorists, legal positivists assert that laws are merely a compendium of rules designed by a sovereign (usually the state) for the regulation of society. It is NOT, they suggest, a universal moral code to which we must submit. In fact, laws retain their validity irrespective of their perceived (im)morality, so long as it is properly made (pedigree) by the recognised law-making authority. People do not obey the law because they feel morally inclined to do so, rather because they respect the legitimacy of the law-making body and fear that the state's coercive forces (police, prosecutors, etc.) will punish them if they do not. If this is so, how do we distinguish between good law and bad law? Must we obey all laws simply because the state tells us to? What if the law calls for behaviour that we consider immoral? How do we reconcile our legal duty with our moral preferences?

PCI: The Positivist Copout Intepretation of Quantum Mechanics

Dr. Sean Carroll holds to what is called the "agnostic interpretation" of quantum mechanics, which is to say that he refuses to try to explain what is actually going on when an electron appears for all of the world to have interfered with itself. To him this is a "metaphysical question" and therefore lacks any meaning. On the TV show CSI we see dead bodies who look for all the world to have been murdered. Yet we can never actually observe the hypothetical "murderer" committing the hypothetical "murder." Thus it is a "metaphysical question" (in the perjorative sense) as to whether or not and how the victim was actually murdered. The only thing we can empirically verify with our evidence is that the victim "just magically" showed up on the ground with twelve stab wounds in him and somebody else's DNA all by himself! Hmm, how did that happen? Well: "Everyone who thinks that "something real happens" when a body goes from alive to dead with twelve stab wounds and someone else's DNA on him -that an apparent murder is on par with a real observed one - has misunderstood the basic meaning of forensics." Forensics is a science and science only deals with what is observable. Since the murder is never observed whether or not it has happened is outside the scope of science and is thus merely a useless "metaphysical question." Do you see the problem here? The electron in the double slit experiment behaves as though it interfered with itself before it is measured and behaves like a <b>...</b>

Dr. Malik Ghulam Murtaza Shaheed answering above question in his program "Akhir Kion"! Dr. Malik Ghulam Murtaza Shaheed was a great Islamic Scholar. His teaching methods were remarkably inspiring. He was teaching True knowledge of Islam to Umma! He was against all this hatred between different Muslim sects and never encouraged any questions causing to separate Muslim Ummah during his lectures! Number of his students were increasing with every lecture! But enemies of Islam couldn't tolerate this so they martyred him (on May 7th, 2002) to stop the light from spreading! Now this is our duty to expand his mission - actually the only duty that Allah has given to all Muslims! May Allah bless his soul and increase his darjaat in heaven, ameen sumameen!
