VOA Learning English - Development Report: A Service Group Built on 'Friendship'

This is the VOA Special English Development Report. Amizade means friendship in Portuguese. It is also the name of a service organization in the United States that places volunteers in projects mostly in developing countries. Amizade's executive director, Eric Hartman, thought of the idea in Brazil in nineteen ninety-four, which explains the Portuguese name. The Amizade Global Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs placed three hundred volunteers in nine countries last year. These American university students and others worked in thirteen communities. Amizade works with local groups and individuals on service and learning projects. The local groups define and direct the projects. The volunteers learn about local culture and make friends as they work in the community. Amizade charges college students as much as ten thousand dollars for three months of experience. Volunteers generally provide labor and do things like teach and assist at health centers. They can also do research. College students can earn work-study credits. Participants in programs have included a twelve-year-old boy and a man in his eighties. There are programs in Ghana, Tanzania, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and Jamaica. There are also programs in Germany, Poland, Northern Ireland and the United States. Recently, in Tanzania, thirteen Amizade volunteers worked on systems to harvest rainwater from the roofs of homes. They worked on the project in the Karagwe area, in the northwestern part of the country. Eric ...

Just don't forget to add your video as a video response, and if you can, get your friends/parents etc to take part too! =) There are NO rules for this thing, anyone can take part. If you feel that your accent doesn't fit into a particular category, don't worry, simply say how you think your accent might have been influenced. Also, please still take part even if someone else has submitted one for your region already; the more the merrier! :D This video will be updated when the project has finished - so if you're reading this it's still on! :D Join the Facebook group! www.facebook.com The passage: See above those clouds, near where the blue sky appears to fold? Some say it is the entrance to the floating isles where pirates still rule the air and dragons choose to live. Only the most skilled pilots can sail their craft close enough to even glimpse the light coming from within. You can't find those who know the way; they find you. Rather, you four lazy tourists must learn from your books and be ready, so that you may not miss an opportunity to travel to that mysterious place. It would be an adventure that you would never forget. Now, I think that's enough with this pleasurable story telling. Go home and join your aunt - she's cooking fine food! Alan Parsons Project - Sirius Eye in the Sky (Live 1995)

After showing early promise as a musician - learning piano, guitar and flute as a child, Alan started to take on the role of listener rather than the player. Although still working as a musician in the late sixties he turned his attention to a career at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London, where he was fortunate enough to have participated in the last works of The Beatles. He was assistant engineer on "Let It Be" and the brilliant "Abbey Road" album. A long association followed; both with the studio and Paul McCartney. When the Beatles split up, Alan went on to engineer such classics as Wings "Red Rose Speedway" album and the singles "Hi Hi HI" and "C Moon". He had a similar association with The Hollies on many hits including "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother", and "The Air That I Breathe". This was only the beginning however; As the engineering mastermind behind Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album, Alan became highly sought after as one of the new breed of creative engineers. His decision to enter into production resulted in immediate success. He clocked up several hits with Pilot, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, John Miles, and Al Stewart. With all this success, Alan found a very real need for management and business guidance. It was then that Eric Woolfson, with whom he had worked at Abbey Road, became actively involved in steering Alan towards becoming an artist in his own right. Although they started with a business venture, Eric was to use his songwriting ...

Project For Awesome 2011 - The KIND Fund

Read more about The KIND Fund: tinyurl.com Donate here: tinyurl.com In which the Nerdwriter does his best to contribute to the astounding Project for Awesome. For the record, he thinks that John & Hank Green are very good people. And he encourages you to donate to his charity, The KIND Fund. The KIND fund, or Kids In Need of Desks, is the brain-child of Lawrence O'Donnell, host of The Last Word on MSNBC. As I've said before I'm chemically addicted to television news, and I heard him announce this charity about a year ago. The simplicity of it inspired me. And that it was something which hadn't crossed my mind -- children without desks. The way we can best leverage our efforts in sub-saharan Africa (really, anywhere underdeveloped) is by removing all obstacles in the way of primary and secondary education. A lack of desks is one problem among many, but perhaps a good way to start. Create an environment which fosters learning from the ground up, literally.

Homemade Off Road Go Kart - Son and Dad project (Videos & Pictures)

Like most boys, my 10 yo son is excited about cars and engines and talks a lot about it. We decided to offer him a real and new small engine last Christmas for him to learn through the dismantling process. It didn't take long that he asked me to build a go kart with him around it. For him, it was a matter of a couple week-ends, but I really knew what it meant. My first reaction...forget it!...but he didn't forget. I thought of it for a few weeks, vacation are not planned yet, he won't be 10 yo for ever, than it would be a great son & dad project that he would probably remember for a long time. So long for my model airplane passion and motorcycle riding this year. His birthday gift...parts and oil! Mainly sketched by hand, drafted some parts on cad. Many hours of pleasure and learning later... Mission accomplished. We finaly pull start the engine for the first time today with lots pride and joy. I think he will remember...

Nerdfighters in Bangladesh - Project for Awesome

This is the story of the Dharmarajika Monastery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was formed in the 1960s by a respected Buddhist Venerable. During the Bangladesh War of Liberation which killed over 3 million people, the Buddhist Venerable setup an orphanage for children who lost parents during the war. Since then, the orphanage has turned into a hostel for both children without parents and those from poor families. No children are adopted - rather the Dharmarajika Orphanage serves as a dormitory giving kids a place to stay, food to eat, and a free education. Those staying in the hostel are allowed to continue to be residents if they want to pursue higher education after graduation. The monastery is trying to sustain this hostel through several income generating initiatives. They also charge tuition for their school for families in the surrounding community who are able to afford it. But, unfortunately, it's never enough to do everything and there are often shortfalls. This is where the YouTube community was able to step in. The Uncultured Project project is not a charity or organization. How To Carve A Simple Woodspirit Face: Part 1

This woodspirit is a great first carving project for the beginning woodcarver and can be considered as an entry-level into faces. I've been using this simple and basic woodspirit face for many years as a teaching tool for helping the students in my woodshop class learn the elements of carving their own. After presenting some basic information on the different types of cuts most students can use one of my woodspirit learning sticks and do a fairly good job. If you decide to give it a try don't expect to have a masterpiece on the first few attempts. when I first started carving faces in wood I wasn't satisfied until about my 30th one! Carving faces takes a lot of time, patience, and practice. Study peoples faces while you are at work, at home, or at play and try to understand how all the parts fit together. As I mentioned in the video first carve the nose and the eyes, then base everything else around that and you will be well on your way. The woodspirit produced in this video was carved from a 1" X 1" piece of basswood. Perhaps in another video I will demonstrate how I carve a woodspirit with more detail such as raised eyebrows, eyes, teeth, tongues, and a variety of emotion and facial expressions. Feldenkrais Class by Baby Liv: Foundations of The Feldenkrais Method - Human Development

This is a montage of a little baby named Liv doing what babies do during their first year of life. It is these first beginnings that form the initial pieces that someone would learn while doing a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Lesson. Finding the floor under you, finding the support the environment gives you such that you can move, repetition that is driven by curiosity and exploration such that action can begin to be effortless and more refined. This piece of baby development forms a major foundation of the work of Moshe Feldenkrais and his method, The Feldenkrais Method. This video clip is the beginning of a series of video clips that will be used to highlight the foundations and principles of The Feldenkrais Method. This has been compiled from a year of footage taken in Whistler, BC. Visit www.thenext25years.com for more information on the project.
