Fox news lies about Wisconsin protests

As teachers and students protested for three weeks in the state capitol of Wisconsin in a fight to let state workers keep their collective bargaining right, Fox News created facts that were far from the truth to push across their political agenda, fabricating poll results, broadcasting fake video, and spinning stories about reporter abuse. John Carroll University GLBT Protest

In light of the recent decision by the John Carroll University administration to not specifically include the protection of Lesbians, Gays, Bi-Sexuals, Transgendered, and Questioning students in its Anti-Discrimination Statement, we, the students, faculty, and alumni of John Carroll University choose to voice our support for those the university leaves without protection. John Carroll's mission is to create people for others. That means support, protection, love, and understanding for all people without regard to color, creed, sexual preference, gender, age, or other personal factors. That's the goal of a Jesuit institution. By not explicitly voicing its support of LGBTQ students, faculty, and alumni, John Carroll's administration is breaking those unspoken bonds of trust that make JCU a community. It's time for those who have called Carroll home in some capacity to speak up and demand of the President, Board of Directors, and Administration the words that promise safety and security to those whose rights are so tenuous and often unprotected. In short, we expect better of John Carroll University. We demand better. We are a gentle, angry people and we are singing, singing for our lives!!! www.jcu.edu

UMass Protests Andy Card and War

On May 25, 2007 Andrew Card faced hundreds of boos and catcalls as he was given an honorary degree during the graduate school commencement at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Before the commencement, about 200 protesters staged a rally and press conference outside the Mullins Center on the UMass campus. Hundreds more students and faculty who opposed the honorary degree would later protest inside the hall. Card, former Bush Administration Chief of Staff and chief salesman for the invasion of Iraq as head of the White House Iraq Group, faced signs calling him a war criminal. People are now calling on UMass to rescind the honorary degree. The protests followed weeks of growing opposition. 400 protested on May 15 (see the rally and march on YouTube at TraprockPeaceTV) and on May 22 protesters marched from the campus to the Amherst common. After the commencement, activists gathered at the Jones Library for a celebration and speakout. Video of both the pre-commencement rally and post-commencement speakout are coming to TraprockPeaceTV. Israel Protests: Over 250000 join biggest anti-govt rally in Tel Aviv

On Saturday night, more than a quarter-of-a-million people took to the streets in Israel in the latest show of discontent with the government. That's after three weeks of protests over the soaring cost of living with activists demanding the Prime Minister steps down. Benyamin Netanyahu has responded with a promise of great changes in Israel's economy. A special panel has been set up to deal with the crisis, which has even led to calls for a revolution similar to that in Egypt, with one Tel Aviv street labelled as 'Israeli Tahrir'. PLEASE HELP US SHARE THIS VIDEO. On 9.12.2009, we went to Washington DC to document the Tea Party protests against, well, a lot of things, including health insurance reform, the IRS, abortion, global warming, and our "socialist/communist/fascist/Nazi/Muslim" president, Barack Obama. Some of them called for a return to McCarthyism, while others called for Glenn Beck to run for office--indeed, it seemed the only thing that everyone agreed on was Fox News. As it turns out, Donald Nelson, appointed under FDR as a "Wartime Production Czar", was the first. We appreciate this correction, though such an oversight does not dilute our point--the current outcry against Czars is totally ahistorical and the result of Glenn Beck's alarmist coverage of Obama's appointees.

Public Debt, Protests Made Economic News in 2011

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Today we look back at some of the top stories of twenty-eleven. In Europe, the debt crisis that started in two thousand ten in Greece and Ireland spread to other countries. Portugal needed a financial rescue, and Italy needed a new prime minister. Silvio Berlusconi lost his job over Italy's debt problems. Former European Union official Mario Monti replaced him in November.Pressures on Europe's financial system called into question the future of the euro. European finance officials called for greater cooperation and new rules. World Bank President Robert Zoellick said Europe would have to find its own answers to its debt problems. "Europe has to rescue Europe, OK? And it's very important. If there's any message when I'm asked, "Well, what can the US do and what can China do?" The best thing they can do is clean up their act at home, be a source of growth at home."Mr. Zoellick also said it was important for other big economies to deal with their own budget imbalances. "The downgrade of America from triple A didn't affect the finances today, but it may be one of those events people look back on ten years from now and say, 'Did they get the warning?'" In August, a credit rating agency cut the United States' credit rating from the highest level, triple A, to double A-plus. Protest against the Trail of Tears

Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co Poet, essayist, and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson argued in an 1838 letter to President Martin Van Buren that the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from its land in Georgia to modern-day Oklahoma was wrong. Emerson's was one of many voices protesting the government's treatment of the Cherokee people. This extended excerpt from his letter, read by Professor Amy Sturgis, demonstrates that people at the time were aware that what the US government proposed to do was a grave injustice and should not have happened. Emerson's and others' protests fell on deaf ears. The forced removal of the Cherokee Nation became known as the Trail of Tears and remains a blemish on US history.

*EMAIL FROM MY COUSIN IN SHIRAZ, IRAN: I don't have access to fb [facebook] and other sites. I can only check my emails. All communication tools are limited here. They are making people silent. Last night they attacked Shiraz University and hit students at school which is illegal. Masters of uni protested the police to enter the school and dormitory but they hit them too. Many teachers resigned and all final exams are canceled. Last night many girls were standing outside of the dormitory because the police didn't allow them to go back to their rooms, so they called us and we invited them to our houses. You don't know how rude they are. They are like wild animals. People here attacked public places like banks to show their anger. I am so angry because there is no way to communicate with other people!!!!!!!!!! Our voice should be heard please tell the world what's going on here. ************** Images from the 2009 Iranian Elections and the protests of the results. Tropic Thunder - Dozens Protest at 'Tropic Thunder' Premiere

After seeing the movie, I can both see why people love it and hate it. They love it because quite honestly, it was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. I couldn't bring myself to find fault in the Robert Downey Jr. character, because it was just so perfectly executed. I mean, the movie in itself was a work of art, Ben Stiller did an excellent job directing and the casting was perfect. Yet, I could sympathize with the people protesting, because the movie was over the top. To me in a good way, but I guess I can see where some would not feel the same way. So, I am giving the movie a cautious two thumbs up, which means, If you are overly sensative, stay home, but if you want to laugh til your sides hurt, go see the movie. www.blacktree.tv Stiller, Downey Jr. and Black lead an ensemble cast in 'Tropic Thunder,' an action comedy about a group of self absorbed actors who set out to make the most expensive war film. After ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys. Taiwan Students Protest Chinese Officials Visit

WONG: And yesterday Taiwanese students protested the visit of Chinese envoy Zhang Mingqing. The Taiwanese protesters were angered over the Chinese communist party's claim that Taiwan is a rogue province. According to the BBC, at one point protesters pushed the envoy to the ground and attacked his car. Here's more. STORY: Taiwan riot police clashed with campus activists who protested a Chinese officials visit on Monday. Vice chairman of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, Zhang Mingqing was invited to attend an academic conference in Tainan. But his visit did not go so smoothly. About 200 demonstrators shouted at him to go back to China at the Tainan National University of Arts. City councilor from the southern city of Tainan, Wang Ting-Yu organized the demonstration. [Taiwanese Student Protester]: "I think Zhang Mingqing oppresses Taiwan in many ways. He should first apologize about the tainted milk, and understand that Taiwan is not part of China, before giving a speech in Taiwan. Without understanding this, how can he communicate with Taiwanese people? We want him to know that without an apology, he cannot communicate with us." The Chinese regime claimed sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949. It vowed to bring the island back under its rule, by force if necessary. Although Taiwans president has improved trade and transit ties with China, many Taiwan citizens continue to distrust Beijing.

Occupy Honolulu: Hawaiian Musician Makana Sings Protest Song to World Leaders at APEC Summit

www.democracynow.org - As President Obama met with world leaders this weekend at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Hawaii to discuss how to bolster global trade, activists with the group Occupy Honolulu protested economic inequity that they say would result from new trade agreements. Meanwhile, within the heavily guarded compound where the summit took place, renowned Hawaiian musician and guitarist Makana carried out his own act of protest. Makana had been invited to play instrumental music at the gala dinner Saturday night. At the dinner, Makana opened his jacket to reveal a t-shirt which read, "Occupy with Aloha." Then instead of performing the background instrumental he was scheduled to play, he started to sing a protest song he had released earlier that day. As world leaders, including Obama and Chinese Premier Hu Jintao, sat in the audience, Makana sang his new song inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, "We are the Many." "I started out very subtlety and subliminally, and I was like, 'ye come here, gather on stage. The time has come for us to voice our rage,'" Makana says. "Then I realized that, 'Wow! I didn't get in trouble!' So I played it again." Democracy Now! airs his statement and his music video. Quebec City Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Protests, April 2001 in Quebec. This video is Part 1 of the VideoActive 3 (VA3) Preview video produced in February 2002. It was George W. Bush's first visit to Canada for the Summit of the Americas and security included a massive chain-link wall, and thousands of riot police and tear gas cannisters. Over 60000 protested in the streets and the entire city was gassed. Hundreds were arrested, assaulted, beaten and jailed for standing up for democracy and against corporate trade deals that undermine rights and genuine prosperity in the Americas. This was a tear gas holiday no one would soon forget. Video produced by the Toronto Video Activist Collective © 2002/2007 www.tvac.ca

Wisconsin Firefighters and Police Officers Join Massive Protests Against Anti-Union Bill

DemocracyNow.org - In the largest rally yet, an estimated 80000 people protested in Madison on Saturday against a bill that would strip public workers of their collective bargaining rights. The state's Democratic Senators—who have fled the state to stall a vote on the bill—sent a letter to Gov. Scott Walker on Friday telling him labor would accept cuts to pensions and increased contributions to health and retirement plans if he would negotiate on collective bargaining. The cuts Walker has proposed in a sweeping budget bill would exclude public safety workers like police, state troopers and firefighters, but this does not mean they are in support of the legislation. To discuss this further, Democracy Now! interviews Mahlon Mitchell, president of the Wisconsin Professional Firefighters Association. "An assault on one is an assault on all," Mitchell says. "As firefighters and police officers, we do not sit idly by. We make things happen. .. We have a fire in the house of labor. We are here to put it out." Violent protests as MPs vote to raise tuition fees. Philip Herd: "The horses' hooves were causing sparks as they charged" University Funding A car containing Prince Charles and Camilla has been attacked by protesters in central London, in violent scenes after MPs voted to raise tuition fees in England to up to £9000 per year. A window was cracked and their car hit by paint, but the couple were unharmed. In angry scenes, protesters have battled with police and attacked buildings, including the Treasury and the Supreme Court. Police say eight officers were hurt in clashes. They have made nine arrests. Protests have spread to the West End with demonstrators breaking shop windows in Oxford Street. Three ministerial aides have resigned, but the fees rise survived a backbench rebellion with a 21-vote majority. Violent Scenes Riot police forced back protesters who were smashing windows and trying to break into a side door of the Treasury. Protesters also smashed windows at the Supreme Court. Earlier protesters had forced their way into Parliament Square and pressed against lines of police in front of the Houses of Parliament. The vote will mean fees being almost tripled, as the government saw its majority cut by three-quarters in a backbench rebellion.
