Mainstreaming Psychedelics: From FDA to Harvard to Burning Man
Google Tech Talk November 17, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Rick Doblin, Ph.D., Executive Director MAPS. We're now in the midst of a worldwide renaissance in psychedelic research, after decades of political suppression. Scientists from around the world will present their new findings at the largest psychedelic conference to take place in the US in 17 years, on April 15-18, 2010, in San Jose, CA (www.maps.org ). Even media reports, which usually mention in passing the widespread use of psychedelics by the counterculture in the 1960s, are more hopeful than alarming. In this talk, we'll review the factors which led to the backlash and the lessons to be learned, discuss how the FDA opened the door to research around the world, how the ghost of Timothy Leary was buried at Harvard, and how Burning Man struggles to respond to people who have difficult psychedelic experiences. We'll conclude by explaining how non-profit drug development, initially of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for postraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can transform psychedelics into FDA-approved prescription medicines and can lay the groundwork for the successful, long-term integration of psychedelics into the mainstream of medicine, religion, art, creativity, and celebration. Psychedelic art is any kind of visual artwork inspired by psychedelic experiences induced by drugs such as LSD, mescaline, and psilocybin. The word "psychedelic" (coined by British psychologist Humphry Osmond) "mind manifesting". By that definition all artistic efforts to depict the inner world of the psyche may be considered "psychedelic". In common parlance "Psychedelic Art" refers above all to the art movement of the 1960s counterculture. Psychedelic visual arts were a counterpart to psychedelic rock music. Concert posters, album covers, lightshows, murals, comic books, underground newspapers and more reflected not only the kaleidoscopically swirling patterns of LSD hallucinations, but also revolutionary political, social and spiritual sentiments inspired by insights derived from these psychedelic states of consciousness. The term "psychedelic experience" is vague -- Characterized by polyvalence or ambiguity due to its nature -- however in modern psychopharmacological science as well as philosophical, psychological, neurological, spiritual-religious and most other ideological discourses it is understood as an altered state of awareness often distinct to, and induced by the consumption of certain psychotropics. In particular hallucinogens, many entheogens and specifically psychedelic compounds are known to cause this change in mental state. Excellent psych and blues-rock band, caressed by some light lysergic varnish, formed in Sacramento, CA. in 1967. Kak, a quartet consisting of Dehner Patten (guitar, voice), Gary Yoder (guitar, vocals), Joseph Damrell (bass, sitar, percusions) and Chris Lockheed (drums, keyboards), surely was among one of the best and most underrated californian bands of its era. Their sole album "Kak" (Epic 1969) is nowadays one of the most sought-after by collectors. A fascinating record, rich with 'psichy' visions and mesmerizing electric ballads led by the shining guitar of Gary Yoder. From the LP was taken the single "I've Got the Time/Disbelievin". The second track, in particular, is an oniric electric pearl which outstands by its eccentricity in a lake of acoustic themes. To be remarked are also the long 'suite' "Golgotha/Mirage/Rain", a splendid mind trip close to some galactic temperatures we can find in Crosby and Kantner, grooved by a sharp and distorted guitar, "Bryte'n'Clear Day", penetrating like a sword blade and the catching "Lemonade Kid" which, if graced by appropriate exposure, could have been able to push the whole album straight up into the US Charts. Gary Yoder will be with Blue Cheer in "The Original Human Beings" and "Oh! pleasant Hope" while drummer Chris Lokheed will be with Randy Holden on live performances also contributing to his solo effort "Population II". www.bluecheer.us
