PsychoGeographic Primer

On December 28th, when our body were overstuffed with food and in need of a good evening walk, we headed to Phog Lounge and took one with some friends and strangers. When we move through cities we tend to stay on the beaten path, rarely diverting. We see our communities from the same perspective each time. Psychogeography is a way of breaking out of that routine and paying attention to and getting excited about the locations in the city. This video is the introduction to PsychoGeography that Shan Micallef gave to the participants before they headed out on ther walk. After this short talk on psychogeography, we broke up into small groups, each with a unique algorithm (a simple formula such as: walk two blocks, turn left; walk one block, turn right; walk one block, turn right; repeat) that randomly guided us through Windsor. After an hour, everyone returned to Phog Lounge and traced their routes on a giant Google Earth projection of the area on a paper-covered wall, adding in discovered details and personal landmarks along the way. The result was one map that depicts a real and imagined Windsor experienced by all participants. Phog Lounge and local award-winning blogs International Metropolis (internationalmetropolis.com) and Scale Down Windsor (scaledown.ca) have teamed up with Toronto writer (and Windsor expat) Shawn Micallef to organize this event. Shawn is a Senior Editor at Spacing Magazine (spacing.ca) and co-founder of the location-based mobile phone documentary ...

Psychogeography - A drift through downtown Vancouver

Public space can be said to be "a place where anyone has a right to come without being excluded because of economic or social conditions." Yet, within a buffer zone of as little as a city block, a hierarchy of social dividers split up the downtown core. Although not always explicit, these invisible dividers cause subconscious resistance and direct motion within city flow. By throwing dice and using their result as a direction and distance, while also letting myself be drawn to points of interest and encounters with urban topography, these dividers were broken down and exploited. Within the boundaries of only a few blocks, I experienced massive change in social structure and a directly proportional relationship with its respective architecture. From crowded, wide sidewalks where everyone is in a hurry, to bamboo and vine pergolas sheltering a narrow passage in the middle of the city, urban paths of greatly varying resistance manifested themselves. Beautiful architecture drew me to the feet of magnificent structures to interact with and behold. Identifying these boundaries and their substratum actualized a new perspective of the downtown core. The organizational layout of downtown Vancouver, whether intentional or not, is intricately redeveloped and implemented by it dwellers who break in their daily paths on a regular basis, following "the path of least resistance."

psycho/geography exhibition at Newlyn

psycho/geography was a changing exhibition of work curated by four artists, Rupert White, Nigel Ayers, Daryl Waller and Paul Chaney, with Steve Messam, using the collective name 'GreenCube'. The artists are all interested in exposing the deep psychological and political content inherent in the landscape and our experience of place. Though connecting with environmental issues, their work goes beyond the simple moral imperatives implied by the green agenda, and instead explores related areas of fantasy, desire and imagination. Psychogeographical Google Earth Walk

A silent walk from the Cube Cinema, Bristol, to Genova in Italy, in Google Earth, using Camstudio, Virtualdub and MS Movie Maker for the recording. Performed with live orchestra at the Cube, February 2008, and with Theremin, Musical Saw and Guitar at the ILRT Art Show 2008. The idea is that future showings should be with live music and effects, so it's a silent film. en.wikipedia.org

DMU Psychogeography Project

A short film for our psychogeography project at De Montfort University. The concept of the film is mapping peoples feelings and emotions at the exact time in relation to where they are. It is also a randomized journey that followed a subject on their journey. We started at Leicester train station, went to Birmingham, around the city centre and the journey ended at Birmingham New Street station. A little rough around the edges because we were working to a very tight deadline, but enjoy anyway. Cinematographers: Yusef Mustafa and Nikki Carruthers Photography: Jorge Uriza and Samantha Lewis Subject: Hannah Harris-Turner Editors: Nikki Carruthers and Yusef Mustafa Planned and devised by: Nikki Carruthers, Yusef Mustafa, Jorge Urize, Hannah Harris-Turner and Samantha Lewis. The Singapore River as a Psychogeographical Faultline - Part II

Video documentation of installation by Debbie Ding at MBS ArtScience Museum, in the Singapore Local Stories Gallery at the end of the Titanic Artifact exhibition. The adaptation of this installation for use with the kinect's camera and sensors was put together and coded within two weeks. Read the documentation here: singaporeriverkinect.blogspot.com =========================== The Singapore River is a site of historical and commercial significance for Singapore, as well as a site to socialise at, and dream of things to come. But what does the Singapore River look like? When prompted to reflect on the river, many find it hard to recall the geography of Singapore's most significant river -- which has changed drastically in purpose, form, and colour over the last hundred years. Originally developed with the support of the The Substation's Open Call in 2010, \\ is an interactive map installation exploring the Singapore River as a "psychogeographical faultline" where reality, memories and imagined spaces interact, merge, or drift apart - like a series of tectonic plates.
