The cloud of ash spewing from a volcano in Chile grounded more flights on Tuesday in South America, forcing Peru's president-elect to cross a river by boat and threatening to delay the start of the continent's football championship. The schedule of next month's Copa America could be altered if the ash cloud from Chile's Cordon Caulle volcano keeps grounding flights, Argentine Football Association President Julio Grondona said. SANTIAGO - The Puyehue volcano in southern Chile erupted on Saturday after half a century of sleep, forcing the evacuation of 3500 people and generating a giant cloud of ash that reached neighboring Argentina. The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) of Chile has announced that the Puyehue erupted in the volcanic complex Caulle cord, caused "an explosion that produces a high gas column height of 10 km about ". The government ordered in the afternoon the evacuation of some 3500 people residing in over twenty towns near the volcano, located 870 km south of Santiago, near the Argentine border. Initially, some 600 people were evacuated in the morning as a precautionary measure after an initial warning SERNAGEOMIN, warning of strong seismic activity in the region, prior to a possible eruption. A dozen earthquakes of medium intensity, magnitude 4 were recorded in a few hours and a hundred small instensité. The National Emergency Office (Onemi) announced that at 3:15 pm (7:15 pm GMT), "the alert level Volcanic Geology Department has been elevated to 6 (on a scale of 8) corresponding to a moderate eruption. "We can see the mouth of the volcano, a column of smoke and (...) we perceive a strong smell of sulfur," said the prefect of the region of Los Rios Juan Andres Varas, quoted by media chilena, whose website the Mercurio. Two airports in the south of Chile remained closed on Thursday and Chile's main airline said it could cancel more flights depending on the direction taken by the ash spewed by the Cordon Caulle volcano. Lan Chile has cancelled all flight going and departing from Temuco and Valdivia airports. Following a change in wind direction, ash has also arrived in other areas in southern Chile previously unaffected such as Villarrica and Pucon. A reconnaissance flight by the Chilean Air Force provided new footage showing that the volcano is still spewing large clouds of ash.

Eruptions Continue in Chilean Volcano Chain

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain spews ash and smoke as officials evacuate thousands from the surrounding area. The volume of ash is so great that it is difficult to tell which of the four volcanoes has erupted. A volcano dormant for decades in south-central Chile continued spewing smoke on Sunday. It belched an ash cloud more than six miles high that blew over the Andes and carpeted a popular ski resort in neighboring Argentina. The eruption in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain, nearly 600 miles south of the capital, Santiago, in Patagonia prompted Chilean authorities to shut a heavily traveled border crossing into Argentina. Chile's government said it was evacuating three-and-a-half thousand people from the surrounding area as a precaution. Officials said the volcano was spitting molten rock, but there was no visible lava flow. It was not immediately clear which of the chain's four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960. It was the latest in a series of volcanic eruptions in Chile in recent years.

The Nilahue and GolGol rivers near the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano are set to burst its banks after its flow increased from 30 cubic meters per second to 160 cubic meters per second. In towns bordering the fiery mount, authorities have warned of imminent flooding after 3500 residents were evacuated. While 500 of them were still in shelters, authorities seek legal permission to evacuate a dozen more who refused to leave their property and animals behind. The weather has forced many planes in South America to remain grounded for a third straight day. Al Jazeera's Craig Mauro reports from Puyehue.

Southern Chile's Puyehue volcano erupted for the first time in half a century, prompting evacuation orders for 3500 people as it sent smoke billowing into the sky, authorities said. The National Service of Geology and Mining said the explosion that sparked the eruption also produced a column of gas 10 kilometers (six miles) high, hours after warning of strong seismic activity in the area. "You can see the fire (in the volcano) and a plume of smoke, and there's a strong smell of sulfur," top Los Rios region official Juan Andres Varas told reporters.

Chilean eruption shows no sign of abating

A towering nine-kilometre cloud of ash and rocks continue to emanate from the Puyehue volcano in Chile. Mount Puyehue shook itself awake on June 4 for the first time in 50 years. The eruption itself is awe-inspiring. Volcanoes in Chile send out more ash because the magma is thicker and rises more slowly to the surface. Chile's chain of 2000 volcanoes is the world's second-largest after Indonesia. This is the latest eruption in Chile in recent years and it shows no sign of stabilising. ... www.euronews.net
