We're at the Tech Center today and on the lift we have a 1970 BMW R75/5. See also R50 and R60. The /5 ( slash five ) series, introduced for the 70 model year, was a real watershed bike for BMW motorcycle production. The previous generation of machines [ post war wwII R50 R50/2 /2 R60 R60US R69 R69S ] were known for their reliability, comfort and quiet operation. Once exclusive attributes to BMW, however, many of the new models from Japan [ Honda in particular with the CB350, CB450 and revolutionary CB750 ] now achieved this at a lower price along with impressive performance. Greatest ever motorcycles discovery The /5 was available in 500, 600 and 750 cc capacities... this being a 750, thus the R75 designation [ R50/5 R60/5 ]. While relying on BMWs trademark air cooled boxer twin, the model is a radical departure in many ways from the previous models. A telescopic fork replaced the Earles leading link fork. 12 volt electrics replaced a 6 volt system. And to the horror of many a BMW loyalist the bike was available in a color combination other than schwartz mit weiss. The horizontally opposed twin [ boxer, flat twin or airhead ] with overhead valves was all-new. Outwardly, the first noticeable change from the previous models was the placement of the pushrod tubes under the alloy barrels and cylinder heads revealing <b>...</b>

This year marks the 60th annual Speedweek, hosted on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats. Speed demons come from all over the world to see the salt flats, to set world speed records, and to take part in one of the last refuges of grassroots racing. At Bonneville, its you and your machine, racing upon a vast plain of white salt. Randy Smith made the 1500 mile journey from Southern Illinois to race at Bonneville Speedway. Randy is the fastest man in the 750cc push rod class, setting a world speed record on his 1970, partially streamlined BMW R75/5. Last year he posted a top record speed of 120.357 mph and now hes back to top his personal best. He Randy set a new speed record, and we recorded this video podcast while his bike was at the impound area for record qualifiers.

This is a 1971 R75/5 that is built as a Cafe Racer and all parts are Bmw,Hoske and Heinrich for the Bmw bikes.

This is my 1972 BMW R75/5 which I purchased in May of 2011. I have put 8000 miles on it and hours and hours of labor into it. It was produced in May 1972, so it's 40th birthday is next month! It has matching frame and engine numbers, has not been restored, and has been maintained with original parts. Always kept in a garage, never ridden in the rain and never dropped. It fires up with electric start first try every time, runs super smooth and has no problems. The R-series are notoriously reliable bikes. This bike is currently a beautiful, extremely smooth running and reliable example of a usable motorcycle from 1972. It is in very good condition, but not restored or showroom condition. It is a gorgeous example that's meant to be ridden and I've done the elbow work to make it fully functional and reliable. Recent work includes: New rear tire and tube. New K&N air filter and oil. Replaced front brake shoes and springs. Topped off driveshaft oil. Replaced gas cap gasket. Clean molybdenum grease on rear wheel splines. Rebuilt front suspension, replacing all seals and fork oil. Replaced and lubed clutch cable. Replaced turn signal flasher. Smoothed throttle action. Re-bored, replaced and reinforced center stand bolt. Adjusted ignition timing. Replaced voltage regulator. Replaced alternator rotor. Oil and oil filter replaced every 4000 miles. Here is the description of the bike from when I bought it in May 2011: "What we have here is a 1972 BMW R75/5 "Toaster".
