France aided Rwanda genocide: author

The massacre of 1 million Rwandan Tutsis by ethnic Hutus in 1994 has become a symbol of the international community's helplessness in the face of human rights atrocities. It is assumed that the West was well-intentioned, but ultimately ineffectual but Andrew Wallis' book reveals, one country - France - was secretly providing military, financial and diplomatic support to the genocidaires all along. Al Jazeera speaks to Wallis, a journalist and author of the book - "Silent Accomplice: The Untold Story of the Role of France in the Rwandan Genocide."

Rwanda Genocide

The Rwanda Genocide was one of worst genocides to occur in the 20th century. Taking place in 1994, hundreds of thousands of Tutsis (a Rwandan ethnic class) were killed in the small African country of Rwanda. Hopefully this five minute video may raise awareness for the usually-overlooked genocide.

Refugee Stories - Shadia Mbabazi, Rwanda

Shadia Mbabazi, 22, was born in Rwanda and fled during the genocide in 1994. Her family traveled overland through Burundi and Congo and finally, in 2001, to Botswana, where they have been living in a camp ever since. Her mother, who was Tutsi, died in 2004. She has two brothers. "(My Mum) was a very strong woman because she was always there for us, " she says. Shadia was determined to complete her studies. She won a competitive scholarship from DAFI, the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative, which is a UNHCR-administered, German-funded program that provides scholarships to deserving refugee children worldwide. After five years of study, Shadia earned a degree in Community Development through a distance learning program at UNISA, the largest university in South Africa. Other camp residents urged her to quit and get married but she persisted, she says, because "even if you get married your husband might die tomorrow, what are you going to do? Start baking? You need to be able to help yourself." To learn more about refugees and the UN Refugee Agency visit: www.unrefugees.org

Peter Greer on Eggs in Rwanda

"After the Rwandan genocide, a church from Atlanta started sending over eggs, and ended up just distributing eggs in a small community outside of Kigali. And this seems like a great thing to do, right? The church wanted to help after the genocide, but Jean, a few years before, had started a small egg business himself. His business was starting to grow, was starting to take off. And then, all of a sudden, in one summer, there become this surplus of eggs that were flooding the market in his area. So, Jeano described that he couldn't compete with a free good. And so, this desire that the church had, to really take care of a need, it did take care of a need, but the problem is that it put Jano out of business." - Peter Greer, President of Hope International

Ghosts of Rwanda

A history of the Rwandan genocide in which the Hutu Racial extremists the Interahamwe systematically slaughtered the Tutsi people and non-racist Hutu's. Told through documentary evidence and interviews with every major figure involved. A gruesome, grotesque and deeply powerful documentary which tells of the horrors of the events and of the reaction to mass murder by each major Western government. To turn away, to not care or to pull support from them. On a personal note I have taken the time to do this as no documentary has meant more to me than this and as Darfur rages on its message has never been more important. For information on Darfur may I recommend and urge you to read "The Death and Rape of Darfur" in the British Journal Of Criminology

Is Rwandan President Kagame on a Path to Another Crisis?

Complete video at: fora.tv Former Rwandan Ambassador to the United States Theogene Rudasingwa observes that the ruling party of President Kagame, the Rwandan Patriotic Front, is exhibiting behaviors characteristic of previous regimes that led to the genocide 17 years ago. "You can see the signals, the stress signals, that existed before 1994, you can see them in Rwanda today," said Rudasingwa. ----- Rwandan president Paul Kagame has emerged as perhaps the most enigmatic and controversial figure in Africa. Is he the principled leader of "one of the safest and most orderly countries in Africa" (as one journalist put it), the man who calmly rebuilt Rwanda following one of the worst episodes of mass killing in the modern era? Or is he the primary architect of a brutal dictatorship, himself implicated in scores of serious human rights abuses, including crimes against humanity and genocide? Please join us for "Revising Paul Kagame: Myth and Reality After the Genocide in Rwanda." Our distinguished panelists will examine the image of Kagame that has been created in the media—and in the popular imagination—and how that image contrasts with reality. - Open Society Foundations Theogene Rudasingwa has served as chief of staff for the Office of the President of the Republic of Rwanda (2000-04) and as Rwandan Ambassador to the United States (1996-1999). He is the Founder, President, and CEO of Haradali.org.

French u-turn on Rwandan assassination

www.euronews.net A plane carrying the Rwandan president in 1994 was shot down by his own troops, according to a French judge. The latest inquiry into Juvenal Habyarimana's death contradicts an earlier French ruling that blamed the rebel fighters led by Paul Kagame, the current president. The assassination of Habyarimana, who was from the Hutu tribe, sparked the Rwandan genocide which, according to the UN, cost the lives of 800000 Tutsis in a little more than three months.

RWANDANS SUPPORTING VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA

RWANDANS SUPPORTING VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA Hundreds of Rwandans came together for the support of Rwandan Opposition leader Madam Victoire Umuhoza Ingabire. Africa's female Mandela? Victoire Ingabiré Umuhoza Opposition presidential candidate Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza stood before a judge in Kigali, Rwanda, on April 22 after the Kagame government arrested and charged her with "associating with terrorists" and "genocide ideology," a crime unique to Rwanda which includes "divisionism" and "revisionism," meaning politics and/or attempting to revise the received history of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. Two weeks earlier, on April 7, speaking at a commemorative ceremony on the 16th anniversary of the civilian massacres known as the Rwanda Genocide, Rwandan President Paul Kagame referred to Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza as "some lady," an example of "some people" who "just come from nowhere, useless people." He refused to speak her proper name, though she is widely acknowledged as the leading opposition candidate in Rwanda's 2010 presidential election, and many of her supporters now call her Africa's female Mandela: "Some people want to encourage political hooliganism. Some people just come from nowhere, useless people. I see every time in the pictures some lady who had her deputy, a genocide criminal, her deputy, talking about "you know, there's Rwanda Genocide, but there is another ... so that is politics. Rwanda Genocide: Carl Wilkens-The American that Stayed Behind

As a humanitarian aid worker, Carl Wilkens moved his young family to Rwanda in the spring of 1990. When the genocide was launched in April 1994, Carl refused to leave, even when urged to do so by close friends, his church and the United States government. Thousands of expatriates evacuated and the United Nations pulled out most of its troops. Carl was the only American to remain in the country. Venturing out each day into streets crackling with mortars and gunfire, he worked his way through roadblocks of angry, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. His actions saved the lives of hundreds. Production is brought to you by Malcolm Price Laboratory School. Filmed by Malcolm Price students.
