Reading & Northern #425 - Railfan Special

On October 25th, 2008, 425 hauled a group of railfans along the R&N's system from Port Clinton to as far as White Haven, stopping for photo runbys along the way. The weather was wet, cold, and miserable, but it made for many interesting scenes of steam working hard in the rain. Also note the whistle #425 is wearing in this video - the Boston and Maine 6-chime steptop. This is the whistle #425wore during the Grand Opening at Steamtown in 1995. Personally I love it's mournful undertones more than any other whistle I've heard on the engine so far. --- Special Thanks to the folks at the Reading & Northern for running this trip (Tyler Glass, Steve Gilbert) www.readingnorthern.com Thanks to Christopher and Andrew Blaszczyk for navigation.

I appologize for the occasional crappiness of the frame rate. As usual, RailWorks and FRAPS are very picky about when they want to work in harmony. South Florida Railfan Series: Dania - Saturday Night, April 17, 2010

I spent a few hours Saturday night railfanning the CSX Miami Subdivision at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Tri-Rail station in Dania. As I was driving there, ATCS revealed a northbound freight exiting Hialeah Yard, and lined to the industrial lead at Golden Glades as well as a southbounder approaching Fort Lauderdale, lined to Track-3. This was all in addition to a northbound train running on Tri-Rail P674's schedule at Hollywood. The northbound freight had to be a local, and with work to do at Golden Glades, it could be an hour or more before they got to me, and as it turned out, that's exactly how it happened. The southbounder was, without a doubt, Q453 and would certainly find me first. With some time to kill before Q453's imminent arrival, I decided to catch P674's station stop at Dania: SX 1016.29 Gulfstream Way/Griffin Rd. 9:06 PM Northbound Track-2 Tri-Rail P674 1 Bombardier Bi-Level Cab Car 2 Bombardier Bi-Level Coaches TRCX #813 GP49 After catching P674, I went back to my car to check the dispatcher's board. I immediately noticed that Q453 was further along than first thought, now well on Track-3 approaching South Dania for their Medium Approach Medium turnout move to Track-1. I literally had to run back to the crossing from the station parking lot in order to get my shot ready. In the process, I accidentally set up my camera beneath the path of the crossing gate which struck my tripod's control arm on the way down. That part ended up on the cutting room floor, btw ...

In this video, Penn Rail Videos is going to take you on an exciting 25 minute adventure at the Tweetsie Railroad theme park in Blowing Rock, NC. We'll first start out by watching both locomotives (#12 and #190) prepare for their day's work. We'll then follow the #12 around the park first, watching it pass by in several locations, and even have some views from inside the cab! "Tweetsie" #12 was built in 1917 by Baldwin for the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad. She is a 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" type locomotive and is the last narrow-gauge engine from the ET&WNC to survive. Next up we'll take a look at the ex-White Pass & Yukon Railroad 2-8-2 #190. She was built in 1943 for the US Army Transportation Corps. At this time, the US Army owned the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. In 1960, the #190 was brought to the hills of North Carolina where she has been ever since. To tourists of Tweetsie Railroad, she is known as the "Yukon Queen". Also of note is that the coach behind #12 came from the East Broad Top RR in Rockhill Furnace, PA. Also the open cars being pulled by the #190 also came from the EBT as flat cars, and were made into open air cars by Tweetsie. After we take a look at both engines in operation, we'll be treated to a double-header as the two locomotives team up to pull the regular tourist train. After this, we'll conclude with the grand finale show of steam ...

First Day of Railfanning in 2011: Joliet, Lockport and Downers Grove- CN, BNSF, Metra & Amtrak

My first full day of railfanning for the year 2011 went something like this: Get up early, hop on the second outbound Metra Rock Island train to Joliet of the morning, get to the station and stupidly remember which direction the platform faces the morning sun... groan and shoot video directly into the blazing sun anyway, spend a few hours at the station, move over to EJ&E Crossing/East Joliet Yard, bus on up to south Lockport (Pace #509) just in time to catch the northbound Texas Eagle, bus (Pace #834) from there to Downers Grove on the BNSF, catch some Metra and more Amtrak there, then home on the BNSF commuter. Train 1: Metra cab car #8561 leads, and F40PH #181 powers, the first non-rush, inbound Rock Island District train of the morning, #506, which will make flag stops at Robbins, Prairie St and 123rd St before heading to La Salle Street Station via the Beverly Branch. Train 2: Canadian National/Illinois Central GP38-2s #9610 and 9618 lead a 9-car local across the Rock and up the Joliet Sub toward the petroleum plants at Lemont. Train 3: Metra Rock Island train #503 pounds the CN, UP & BNSF diamonds as it slows for its final stop at Joliet Union Station. Train 4: Amtrak P42DC #26 leads 7 cars on the northbound Lincoln Service, train #300 from St Louis, with P42DC #127 trailing, as it arrives, loads and unloads passengers, then departs for Chicago. During the first weekend of October 2011 the weather wasn't the greatest, however the action on the rails was rather well. Highlights include CSXT 4848 [SD70Ace] on Q109, a BNSF leader on NS 205 and an all Union Pacific powered 263! Also, all the crews gave generous horn salutes for the crossings near-by. Overzealous Railfan Gets Busted and Misses 4449 at Pasco, WA

This is a great shot, I think, of eastbound 4449 rolling off the north end of the Columbia River drawbridge at Pasco, WA on July 3rd, 2009. For me, the best part is seeing the overzealous railfan, who thinks he is above the law and can take a photo from anywhere he damn well pleases, get busted by the local BNSF cop and miss out on the shot he was thinking he could take. For the rest of the railfans that were maintaining a respectful and legal distance, the best part was that he got chased away just in time for everyone else to get our shots of the Daylight exiting the bridge without that idiot in them. Dude, if that was you and you ever read this, you're lucky he didn't ticket you, because you really deserved one.
Suspicious Railfans Reported to Dispatcher

Apparently we (two guys with DSLRs in a car with a big antenna - a typical railfan profile if ever there was one) looked too suspicious when we were stopping at grade crossing and taking photos of this train. The conductor called in a description of both of us (it was amusing hearing her describe my "98% Chimp" shirt) as well as our license plate. A few miles down the line they called the dispatcher again. Knowing that a followup report was likely, I had my phone ready to record the conversation... To be absolutely clear, both Dan and myself take safety very seriously, and neither of us set foot on railroad property for the entire duration of this chase. It's a shame that the crew felt it necessary to waste the time of the dispatcher and any law enforcement that may have been called as a result of a couple of guys exercising their First Amendment rights on a Sunday afternoon.

I say we were "more or less on our own" because we did spend the middle two weeks traveling with our Polish pen pals Piotr and Ewa and their 15 year old son Maicek. (Ewa teaches English as a foreign language, Piotr understands it well enough that he could laugh at some of my jokes, and Maicek already had enough English skills to get by). They, like us, are a railfan family. We were also joined by our friends Ted and Kay from Alamosa, CO. They are not railfans, but I think that caused them more distress than it caused us. After returning home I started telling people about what a great time we had in Poland and the responses almost invariably were along the line of "I didn't know you were Polish" and "what could you possibly find of interest in Poland to justify spending a whole month there?" Just for the record, neither of us have any Polish heritage, we did not speak or understand a word of Polish (well, OK, we knew pierogi and kielbasa) and we had never been outside the US before (well, OK, we've been to Canada a couple of times). Also, while I knew that there was still some mainline and narrow gauge steam to be found in Poland, this trip really was not about trains or railfanning. Only 12 of the 28 days were spent on or near trains (not counting the trams that you just naturally use to get around in the cities) and of those, five ...

Cass Railfan Weekend 2008 - The Log Train

Shot over the course of two days during the Cass Scenic Railroad's annual Railfan Weekend hosted by the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association, we follow a recreated log train up the mountain to Spruce, where it meets up with a pair of Western Maryland vintage diesels. Special thanks to Walter Scriptunas II for some additional footage from onboard the log train.

This whole video series started with me planning on catching both amtrak trains. I thought I would just call it quits after that, but when #3 left town I decided to go to Newton and see what was going on. I caught about 4 trains there (didn't get to film some of them) then I made the big decision to go to Emporia. Look for Pt. 2! (c) 2009 Chuck Mitchell

The Cass Scenic Railroad: Railfan Weekend 2010 (Part One)

For the first time ever, Penn Rail Videos visits the Cass Scenic Railroad for their annual 'Railfan Weekend' event. This year, we'll get to see quite a bit for our first visit to the railroad. We'll start on Friday, as rare Heisler-type engine #6 takes us up to Whittaker, with a runby or two along the way. We'll then jump into Saturday's action, which took place on a miserable two-thirds of the day. Shays #11 and WM "BIG SIX" #6, will take us up the mountain, with Shay #5 being on the log train for several runbys at multiple locations. Shay #5 is the oldest operating Shay at Cass. We'll go all the way to Bald Knob, which unfortunately for us, was in the clouds! But we'll atleast get to hear 'BIG SIX' calling everyone back to the train at the near-top of the mountain. The train will back down to Spruce, where the weather had finally cleared up for our final location of the day. Sunday's action is featured on Part Two, so stay tuned for the upload!

HiDef: Railfanning @ TCRM

Hey look! A video that's not on the LA&SL! On April 21st, the TCRM sent off their excursion train to Watertown's Miles Long Yard Sale on this damp and cold morning. This train has quite the jumble of locomotives running, with two of the N&E's GE locomotives with the museum's E8 and F7B, with a privately-owned C&O caboose and one of the few all-matching passenger consists in the country. That's ajracer101 I call out to in the dome car's vestibule. Meanwhile, the museum's SW8 moves the new power car into the platform for a load test for when the train gets back. Upon arriving at Emporia, I met up with Eric Burris (eccentriceric) and we went out to the tracks to see what was happening. Too bad I got to Emporia when train traffic was light, after I left to go back to Hutchinson, Eric called me to say that 5 trains had just gone through....thats how it usually works haha.
