Ubisoft has confirmed ongoing rumors of a new R6 game, titled Rainbow Six Patriots. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal with help from Ubisoft Toronto and Red Storm, it's planned for release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2013. As rumored, the team will take on a threat called the "True Patriots," a revolutionary group railing against the US government and special interests. Ubisoft promises "tough ethical decisions" in stopping the threat of domestic terrorism. The upcoming cover of Game Informer confirms the New York City setting. Although the announcement didn't share specific details, Patriots will also be receiving the series' signature co-op and multiplayer modes. Initially it was called FBI Hostage Rescue Team, later Black Ops and as the missions were getting more variety they decided to buy the Tom Clancy license (even before the book was out). Anyway this is mostly about killing Tangos in a modern and more less realistic setting. The game is quite hard and considering the big number of random situations that are given in each mission, succeeding is mostly a matter of luck once the plan is done. The planning phase is quite daunting at first, but it's just about knowing what parts should be done manually, since the interface won't let you be as precise as in Frozen Synapse for example. This is a normal walkthrough with no special bonus. I think that no one died with the exception of all those reserve genoma clones. I've been reading comments and posts from around the internet very carefully over the last day and whilst there has been lots of positive feedback there were two main areas that needed addressing. First there was questions as to whether or not Kinect was actually being used and second there were views that this didn't really add anything to the Wii/Move experience. I think the first boils down to a general lack of understanding regarding the Kinect gesture binding and the second down to the game used. I hope in this video that both of those arguments are addressed :) Squad commands and the cover system both use gestures, as does reloading, grenade throwing and interacting with the environment. These again use FAAST from the brilliant people at USC to bind gestures to key presses. Aiming and movement are done with the Wiimote and chuck for precision and fast responses. The main problem with applying this to Vegas Two was the fact that crouch can only be set to a toggle. A clever hotkey script could fix this but I wanted to get this out ASAP. The second main problem is that my laptop isn't that hot and FAAST alone uses about 30% of my CPU time, add in FRAPS recording over the top and I was playing at about 10FPS. This does have an impact on the responsiveness of the Wiimote aiming and sometimes gestures don't get recognised if done to FAAST. I hope you like the video and look forward to your comments. This is just a little footage of me lone wolf-ing on the map of the first level of Rainbow Six: Lockdown. The custom gameplay mode in this game is weird... it actually requires you to start up a LAN game in order to do anything like the old "custom mission" function in Raven Shield or the other previous games. Overall, R6:L was a huge letdown for longtime Rainbow Six fans like myself. It reeks of being a console game (though it's pretty bug-free, I'll give it that). Missions are cramped and linear, you can't use the sniper rifle (yes, there's only one in the entire game) outside multiplayer (they had a mission in the console versions where you sniped, but it was removed from the PC version), squad commands are overly simplified, it feels very "arcade-y," and it's altogether simply too easy. Don't worry, I'll review it eventually. Anyway, for you loadout junkies, mine in this video consisted of the AUG Para assault rifle with an aimpoint attached, MEU SOC 1911 sidearm, and phosphorus and frag grenades.
