The pick-up runners seemed to be mostly ones I had seen in action on the equivalent bill of the Super Car series this year and the same plumes of black diesel smoke enveloped the track whenever these hulking machines ventured out of the pitlane. The pick-ups ranks, split over three classes, were made up of workhorses from the Chevrolet, Toyota, Ford, Isuzu and Mitsubishi stables. The light was starting to fade now as the 13 pick-ups swiftly assembled on the grid for a scheduled 5 oclock green flag. These beasts again provided plenty of attention, especially with some of the chosen lines that appeared to defy racing convention not to mention the laws of physics, with the top-three competitors locked in a battle for supremacy during the opening laps. The battle raged right over the 12 laps to the chequered flag with honours eventually going by just 0.313 of a second to the gloriously-named Worrapoj Boonchouylhoue in the #14 Izuzu and he crossed the finish line in a cloud of diesel smoke after 15 minutes and 48.091 seconds of tooth-and-nail fought racing. He also posted the fastest lap in 1 minute 17.44 seconds, an average speed of 111.564 km/h, and collected the Class A/B honours. Pitoon Thamasirikul (#27 Mitsubishi) claimed second place, while the last podium position went to Jaras Jangkamolkunchai (#5 Chevrolet) who faded off the lead battle by the flag, but was still less than two-and-a-half seconds off the runner-up spot. The warm-up act to the main race, Super 2000, which basically allows pretty broad modification to sedans and coupés up to 2000cc, was action packed. In this encounter the top four comprised of two red-and-white official liveried Toyota Altis twins which traded paintwork with a couple of Honda DC5s before, Pirompakdee Piti (the son of the owner of Singha Beer, which seems to have its decals on almost every car in the paddock) got the upper hand and the front-runners settled down to a spaced out finishing order just a handful of laps from the chequered flag. By the end of the 22-lap race Piti had eased out to a decent cushion at the front and had a useful 10.868 seconds in hand over the second-placed Altis of Manat.

This was round 5 of the 6-round Bughouse Tournament, which took place February 15-16, 2009 in Parsippany, NJ, USA. My partner is Shin Uesugi & I (Neph Diaz) had white on the bottom left vs a strong team -- Scott Low, a 2300+ FICS Bugger (black) and his partner Daniel Yeager (also 2300+) with white. A total of 26 teams participated, including several strong FICS Buggers (Dan & Scott obviously 2 of them). This was game 5 en route to our undefeated 6-0 finish. Over the weekend the Thai Super Car series returned to the Bira International Circuit for the third round of the year. The championship, which sits firmly at the pinnacle of Thai motor sports, was also visiting the track located just 15 kms inland of the city of Pattaya for the third time this season. This weekend's action though came with a big twist as it would feature a unique headlining "showdown" as the regular Thai Super Car runners would go head-to-head with a gaggle of "big beasts" shipped over from the New Zealand V8 championship for the occasion. This is the first round of the Thai Super Car series I have made it to this year due to clashing commitments and most notably, in a sweeping change, the usual mix of faces and cars has been joined by six machines and drivers from New Zealand that provide immediate and abrupt diversity. The half-dozen Kiwi cars range from an early Dodge Viper GTRS with its massive 8-litre V10 engine, full-on silhouette spaceframe racers, including FIA GT1-specification machines, and a "touring car" Ford Falcon (a production derived car built for the NZ V8's series' own "Super Car" class which caters for Falcon and Holden Commodore racers) - all big brutes and all built for sheer straight-line speed. The entries for the Super Car series were pretty much the same as the previous round with 21 cars appearing on the list. The black-and-gold Singha Beer sponsored Porsche 911 Cup car that had dominated last time I was here again was looking promising again, as were the two extreme-looking Team Arto Toyotas, that appeared to be refugees from the Japanese Super GT series of a few years ago, which menacingly sandwiched the German car at the front of the grid. According to the time sheets posted in the media centre, Vutthikorn in the #18 Porsche had won Saturdays 22-lap race, finishing just 0.458 seconds ahead of the first of the two official Toyota runners, Nattavude, while his team mate in the other silver-and-red liveried Altis, Nattapong, had claimed the final podium slot, 38.056 seconds back. Behind this trio there were three Mitsubishi Evos spread over the next four slots, with the interloper being a Mazda RX-7. Last time out the Singha Porsche had humiliated the two very professional-looking Toyotas but this time there were to be no mistakes and the Japanese machines ran away and hid at the front as the black German machine dropped back very quickly with what sounded like a broken exhaust which would have accounted from the 5-10 seconds a lap it lost until retiring after 14 of the 22 laps. New into the field was a BMW E30 M3 based racer although the team reported that they were being plagued with problems and the car wasnt able to complete more than a handful of laps at <b>...</b>

The best action of the day came in the support categories, the pick-ups providing a never ending stream of clashes, bumps, off track excursions, door closing manoeuvres (maybe that should be tailgate-closing?) and bodywork shedding moments, all to a haze of thick black plumes of exhaust smoke that wouldnt be sanctioned anywhere else. These cars boast rear spoilers perched at the back seemingly in defiance of aerodynamic principles and at least one of these appendages was detached with a bang in the chicane, while one reached the line at full tilt, but with a heavily reshaped three-quarter panel that will give a bodyshop somewhere in Thailand a very busy few days before final round in Bangsaen looms into view. A curious choice of driving lines was clearly in evidence throughout the race and they certainly kept the crowd thoroughly entertained. For the record Nana (Mitsubishi Triton) won the race 6.732 seconds ahead of Jarat (Chevrolet Colorado) with Yut in another Triton taking the last step on the podium.

Kumho Tyres Mike Truscott headed into the round with a slender points lead over young sensation lloyd Smith in his wild Falken V8 Corolla. In a fairytale finish lloyd and Trusky found themselves going head to head to see who would go into the final battle. Trusky showing his veteran skills to outclass lloyd who was suffering gear selection issues but amazingly battled on to close finish. The final battle coming down to Trusky and Ben Purtell in his mental 180sx, with Ben showing a faultless display to take an easy win.
