Reason 4 Tutorial - Thor as a Programmable Filter (a slightly advanced tutorial) - Part 2 of 3
This is Part 2 of 3 of my series on Thor. This video covers using Thor's extensive routing matrix to make really cool, switchable and programmable effects. I've made a patch that exercises some of your options when routing Thor, but the real power is in your brain. Once you know how to do things like this, you can take the time to make your own patches from scratch and really flourish in Reason. I'm using a Subtractor mono synth, only running 1 oscillator and 1 LFO, turned stereo as the basis for my sound and all other modulation is done through Thor's routing matrix and Combinator button assignments. I've tried to provide the most detailed information I could find in the Annotations, so make sure you have those turned on for the full effect. I forgot to say; I'm building this synth from a blank or 'initialized' patch. Reason automatically loads 'Epic Poly' every time you create a new thor. To stop this, you can UN-click the 'load default sound in new devices' box in the general preferences. Now all new devices will load an initialized patch when you create them. You can also initialize any patch by right-clicking on the device. Sorry if I go a bit fast in places. You might have to pause here and there to read everything. yayapp same story as usual, guitar played and recorded by me using free high-q recorder for recording (duh!) and audacity to cut the samples. my keyboard (edirol pcr m1) didnt want to work with me, so I ended up inserting all notes by hand in the sequenser, which was a bit of a pain in the ass, since i always play on the keyboard. oh and at the end of the track, there are cymbals and hihats playing at the same time, which is impossible unless you have 3 arms, but i thought it sounded better that way

This video shows the routing concepts and techniques needed to use all 4 of Thor's inputs and outputs to make really complex, evolving and dynamic synth patches based around Thor's expansive filter sections. Thor itself is an absolute beast, but when used in combinations of other forms of synthesis and other devices it's true power is unlocked. Here, we're using 2 Malstrom synths and some new routing and cabling options in the first patch to show how this needs to be set up. The second part of the video is a creative patch that I made that shows how to truly make Thor an instrument like one you've never seen. One with the ability to change the entire scope of the patch and sound on-the-fly. Watch the Annotations in the video for a full explanation of the internal Thor routing I used for the second patch, I didn't have enough time to talk about it in the video.
