NEOJIBA - Ricardo Castro and Bahia Youth Symphony Orchestra "Juvenil 2 de Julho" - Retrospective 2008 - The Bahia Youth Orchestra, created in September 2007 and known as Juvenil 2 de Julho, is the first ever symphony youth orchestra in Bahia. Its part of NEOJIBÁ (State Nucleus of Youth and Children Orchestras of Bahia), a government program directed by the pianist and maestro Ricardo Castro who implant since 2007 in Bahia a system of orchestras inspired on the acclaimed El Sistema from Venezuela. The first concert of the BYSO was in October 2007 with a young Venezuelan conductor Manuel López Gómez, sent at the occasion by FESNOJIV (Fundación del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles y Infantiles de Venezuela). The orchestra has around 90 musicians with age range from 10 to 25 who meet 5 days a week for rehearsals. The group has already played several concerts in Brazil and is constantly monitored by famous conductors and soloists. In 2009, the BYSO was invited to perform at the Festival Internacional de Inverno de Campos do Jordão, being the first orchestra from Bahia to have this opportunity. Still in 2009 the BYSO realizes its first tour in seven Brazilians capitals and participates at the Bahia Festival in Caracas, Venezuela. More information at www.neojiba.org or neojiba.blogspot.com.

A documentary on the show 'Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool' at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. February 7th- July 13th 2008. Hendricks was born in Philadelphia in 1945, studied at and received his certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and earned his bachelors and masters degrees in fine arts from Yale University. He is a professor of art at Connecticut College in New London, Conn., where he has been teaching since 1972. Hendricks made his mainsteam museum debut at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the 1971 show, Contemporary Black Artists in America, and the Studio Museum in Harlem organized his first major solo show in 1980. In 1994, his work was part of the Whitneys Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art. In 2001, a large solo show, The Barkley L. Hendricks Experience, was organized by the Lyman Allyn Museum of Art, New London, Conn Hendrickss oil portrait of Fela Kuti was an important new work in the 2003 New Museum exhibition, Black President: The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, also curated by Schoonmaker. And in 2005, Hendricks work was included in Back to Black -- Art, Cinema and the Racial Imaginary at Whitechapel Art Gallery in London.
