Blind Willie Johnson ~Motherless Children Have A Hard Time~

Blind Willie Johnson was born in 1897 near Brenham, Texas (before the discovery of his death certificate, Temple, Texas had been suggested as his birthplace). When he was five, he told his father he wanted to be a preacher, and then made himself a cigar box guitar. His mother died when he was young and his father remarried soon after her death.[1] It is thought that Johnson was married twice, first to a woman with the same first name, Willie B Harris, and later to a young singer named Angeline, who was the sister of blues guitarist LC Robinson. No marriage certificates have yet been discovered. As Angeline Johnson often sang and performed with him, the first person to attempt to research his biography, Samuel Charters, made the mistake of assuming it was Angeline who had sung on several of Johnson's records. However, later research showed that it was Johnson's first wife. Johnson was not born blind, and, although it is not known how he lost his sight, Angeline Johnson provided this account to Samuel Charters: She said when Willie was seven his father beat his stepmother after catching her going out with another man. The stepmother then picked up a handful of lye and threw it, not at Willie's father, but into the face of young Willie.

REV. GARY DAVIS

Rev. Gary Davis 2003 Folk Alliance International Lifetime Achievement Award. In his prime of life, which is to say the late '20s, the Reverend Gary Davis was one of the two most renowned practitioners of the East Coast school of ragtime guitar; 35 years later, despite two decades spent playing on the streets of Harlem in New York, he was still one of the giants in his field, playing before thousands of people at a time, and an inspiration to dozens of modern guitarist/singers including Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, and Donovan, and Jorma Kaukonen, David Bromberg, and Ry Cooder, who studied with Davis. Davis was partially blind at birth, and lost what little sight he had before he was an adult. He was self-taught on the guitar, beginning at age six, and by the time he was in his 20s he had one of the most advanced guitar techniques of anyone in blues -- his only peers among ragtime-based players were Blind Arthur Blake, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Blind Willie Johnson. Davis himself was a major influence on Blind Boy Fuller. Davis's influences included gospel, marches, ragtime, jazz, and minstrel hokum, and he integrated them into a style that was his own. In 1911, when Davis was a still teenager, the family moved to Greenville, SC, and he fell under the influence of such local guitar virtuosi as Willie Walker, Sam Brooks and Baby Brooks. Davis moved to Durham in the mid-'20s, by which time he was a full-time street musician, and celebrated not only for the diversity of styles that ...

Samson & Delilah(Rev. Gary Davis Cover)-Blues Harp

Good GAWD! Let me just start out by restating the obvious: Reverend Gary Davis was 'The Man' His songs and music instruction has influenced generations of musicians, and will continue to do so for years to come. For those who don't already know, Reverend Gary Davis was an incredible blues pioneer. Like many other powerful Afro-American blues legends of his time, his lack of site did nothing to hamper his inspired musical stylings. Like many other artists of his era in another ways as well, many artists were more successful with their covers of his original songs than he himself was. His students included such masters as Stefan Grossman and Woody Mann, to name just two. I like this tune way too much to not cover it eventually. I had an idea in the back of my head for a while to do a Rev. Gary Davis tune with the concept of a fusion between the Mississippi Delta blues sound and the urban Chicago blues sound, and this is the one I picked. I've completely changed the arrangement, as well as revising the lyrics a little bit, so I'm ready for the purists to burn me at the stake. Cheers all!

Cocaine Blues (Rev. Gary Davis, Bob Dylan, Davy Graham et al) on a baritone ukulele

I tried to find the lyrics to this song. I compiled a bunch of different versions, then I said, screw it, I'll just make them up as I go along, like everyone else does.

Reverend Gary Davis - Hesitation Blues Guitar lesson

www.TotallyGuitars.com Learn to play Reverend Gary Davis - Hesitation BluesGuitar lesson - sample guitar lesson. Hesitation Blues -- This song has very sketchy origins, as the title was copywritten in 1915 by a trio of forgotten songwriters. It surfaced in recordings by Reverend Gary Davis and Hot Tuna (led by guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Cassidy) and even Jesse Colin Young on his album Song For Juli, as Miss Hesitation.
