Hand vs. Liquid Nitrogen - Revisited
I go back to sticking my hand into liquid nitrogen but remain uninjured due to the Leidenfrost effect. The Leidenfrost effect is the formation of a gas barrier between a hot surface and a boiling liquid if the temperature difference is great enough. This gas barrier greatly slows the heat transfer between the two and allows the liquid to last longer and consequently the hot surface to remain hot longer. This effect can be seen in a frying pan as it's being heated. At first the water quickly boils as it's dropped in but at a hot enough temperature the Leidenfrost effect takes over and makes the water skate around the surface lasting a very long time. Liquid nitrogen vs. a room temperature object will also exhibit the effect preventing it from instantly freezing the object... such as my hand.

A NEW CHAPTER IN HISTORY AGI REVISITS APOLLO 13 ON ITS 40th ANNIVERSARY April 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Apollo 13's historic space flight. In honor of the occasion, AGI and noted space author Andrew Chaikin teamed up to tell a part of the story that they unearthed and validated with the help of original mission personnel. This animation is narrated by Chaikin, author of "A Man on the Moon." In the video, he explains how he and AGI engineers used STK software to analyze data from Apollo 13. In doing so, they came up with information that challenged conventional wisdom. Most history books had long speculated that if the Apollo 13 crew had not been able to bring their stranded craft safely back home, they would have orbited Earth indefinitely. Using AGI's STK software to reenact the event, AGI and Chaikin learned that the crew's fate would have been far different. MOTION BLUR SHUTTER ANGLE CONVERSION Frame rate is how many frames per second your camera records. Shutter speed is how long, in seconds, those individual frames are recorded at. So if you shoot 24 frames per second, the maximum your shutter speed could be is 1/24th of a second. Here's the shutter speed/degrees conversion for 24 frames/second (or 23.98 frames/second): 1/24 = 360 degrees 1/48 = 180 degrees 1/60 = 144 degrees 1/100 = 86 degrees 1/200 = 43 degrees 1/500 = 17 degrees Here's the shutter speed/degrees conversion for 30 frames/second: 1/30 = 360 egrees 1/60 = 180 degrees 1/100 = 108 degrees 1/200 = 54 degrees 1/500 = 22 degrees Or use this formula: (Shutter Speed) / (1/frame rate) * 360 So for above, if we're shooting 1/60th of a second at 24 frames per second, it would be: (1/60) / (1/24) * 360 = 144 degrees

Sticky Light - the smart laser scanner revisited
A laser spot bounces on a figure being drawn on paper, trying to escape the labyrinth of lines. There is no camera nor projector; this is an experience where the audience can touch and interact with a beam of pure light - and even play a pong game with bare hands. The quality of the laser light, and the fluidity of the motion makes for a very unique experience. The piece is based upon a 3d tracking technology developed earlier in our lab, using a laser diode, a pair of steering mirrors, and a single non-imaging photodetector called the "smart laser scanner". In 2007 the BBC documentary film 'Bulgaria's Abandoned Children caused an international outcry because the images of neglect were so shocking to witness in a country that had just become a member of the European Union. Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. The film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one institution. Eighteen months after filming it, director Kate Blewett returned to Bulgaria in 2009 to film with a handful of the children featured in the original documentary, seeing where they are today and how their lives have changed since the outcry and changes brought about by the film. The original documentary is set in a small Bulgarian village in an institute called Mogilino, a place where 75 unwanted disabled children are growing up. Many of them cannot walk or talk, not necessarily because they are unable to, but because they have been neglected and have never had the opportunity to learn. With extraordinary access, Blewett takes us into this tragic silent world. The second half of the film takes the audience back to Bulgaria to see how the lives of the children have been transformed beyond recognition as a result of the public response to the film. It is testimony to the power of television to bring about concrete change, and also demonstrate how even apparently hopelessly withdrawn and 'damaged' children can be reached, helped and given a meaningful life and future with <b>...</b>

Steve Jobs called The Whole Earth Catalog "one of the bibles of my generation". He went on to explain in his Stanford commencement speech in 2005, "It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions". The Whole Earth Catalog was a kind of "unofficial handbook of the counterculture". It was, pre-Internet, a way for anyone anywhere to tap into a global economy. Founder and editor Stewart Brand set out to create a catalog- like the then-very-practical-and-universal catalog LL Bean- that would showcase all of the great tools of the world to help anyone do things for themselves or learn about big ideas. Lloyd Kahn was the Shelter editor of the catalog. Kahn, an insurance broker-turned-builder, leveraged his experience with Whole Earth and began to publish his own books. First, he wrote very popular books on dome building. Kahn had become "the spokesman for the counterculture on domes" (his dome home even appeared in Life Magazine), but he took the books out of print when he decided the building style just wasn't practical and "I didn't want any more domes on my kharma". In 1974 Kahn took down his dome and replaced it with a more traditional handmade home. "Built stud-frame house using recycled lumber, doors, windows," he writes in his 2004 book Home Work, "Relief somehow to discover old ways can work best."
