Bulgaria HiLites: Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are an integral part of the large monastery complex called "St. Michael the Archangel," an exceptional spiritual and literary center of Bulgarian Medieval art. This complex was developed during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom by church hermits. The 14th-century murals, rock-hewn churches, chapels, monasteries, monk's cells, and unique mural paintings in the style of the Tarnovo and Constantinople School (14th century) survived to this day, having weathered the vicissitudes of history.

Bulgaria HiLites: Rusenski Lom Natural Park

The Rusenski Lom Natural Park protects the shallow limestone canyons of the three Lom rivers and their associated caves, forests and grasslands. The Park is just south of the Danube in the northern Bulgarian lowlands, near the city of Ruse. The HNV area extends to about 10000 ha, but of this only just over 3400 ha is covered by the Natural Park designation. Within the Park itself, four fifths of the area is classed as forest.

Romania HiLites: Transfagarasan Alpine Highway

The DN7C, also known as the Transfagarasan Highway, branches off the road to Brasov, heading straight for the towering Fagaras Mountain range. The highway is open only a few months a year due to snowfall; snow can still block roads in June, while October brings the first new loads. The road does not actually cross a pass as the ridge is too jagged; a 890 m long tunnel (the highest point of the road; 2042 m) links the two valleys. The Transfagarasan Highway was built at considerable cost in the 1970s. After the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, Ceausescu was afraid the same thing might happen to maverick Romania, and had this road built so that troops and tanks could cross over the Carpathian mountains quickly.

Argos Monastery, foundation of waivode Neagoe BASARAB, is a masterpiece of the Romanian architecture, unique by its beauty, greatness and artistic value from the SE of Europe. The ruler Neagoe built the Monastery, at the beginning of the 16th century (between 1512 and 1517), on the place of the Old Metropolitan Church of the Romanian Country, whose construction had begun since 1351. Curtea de Arges Monastery has an impressive architecture, with four tall steeples, the ones from the front side being a spiral shape (popular term "twisted rope"). The cross shaped building has the inferior parish register taller, split in rectangular panels, with sculptured frames embedding the windows. The superior register is split in a double number of semicircular panels with different decorative shapes, carved in stone.

Romania HiLites: Viscri, A Transylvanian Saxon Village

The place is first mentioned in a document from around 1400 under the name "Alba Ecclesia". The Latin form of the name corresponds to the old name Vyskirch, the Saxon Waiskirich and the Hungarian Szószfeheregyhaza. The Romanian name Vicri derives from the Saxon name. Politically Deutsch-Weisskirch became a free commune with the disempowerment of the Graf dynasty. This occurred in the second half of the 15th century at the latest. In 1999, the fortified church and the village were included, together with six other places in southern Transylvania, in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List thus acknowledging an ensemble which, in terms of its settlement structure, the structure of the parcels of land as well as the architecture of the buildings and their fittings, has almost completely preserved the character of a typical Saxon Transylvanian village over a period of centuries. The standard type of farmstead remained the same from the time of the wooden buildings over and beyond the appearance of the first stone ones at the end of the 17th century up until the first third of the 20th century. The few younger buildings inconspicuously blend in with the general appearance of the village

Romania HiLites: City of Sibiu (Hermannstad)

Sibiu (German: Hermannstad) is an important city in Transylvania. It straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. It is the capital of Sibiu County and is located some 282 km north-west of Bucharest. Between 1692 and 1791 it was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania. Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centers of Romania, and was designated a European Capital of Culture for the year 2007, in tandem with Luxembourg. Formerly the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons, the old city of Sibiu was ranked as "Europe's 8th most idyllic place to live" by Forbes. After World War I, when Austria-Hungary was dissolved, Sibiu became part of Romania; the majority of its population was still ethnic German (until 1941) and counted large Romanian and Hungarian communities. Starting from the 1950s and until after 1990, most of the city's ethnic Germans immigrated to Germany.

Las Vegas, NM

Whether touring on foot, or by bicycle, car or bus, Las Vegas, New Mexico provides the visitor with an architectural experience perhaps unparalleled in the Great American Southwest. From the indigenous adobe architecture of New Mexico to the glamorous, machine-age International Style, Las Vegas boasts excellent examples of nearly every important architectural residential style built in the United States between 1840 and 1940. Many of these houses are in pristine condition; some unmodified for over 100 years. Las Vegas continues to fascinate not only for its architecture, but for its unique city planning. The Old Town Plaza was established on high ground above the Gallinas River for irrigation purposes; the area that is now Bridge Street and Moreno, San Juan and Valencia Streets was used by settlers to grow crops. Streets in Old Town radiate from the Plaza like spokes of a wheel. They tended to follow natural features of the land such as arroyos, hills and cow trails. The Las Vegas Plaza, with these characteristics intact, is probably the best preserved in New Mexico.

The Trigrad Gorge is a canyon of vertical marble rocks in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria's very southern parts. The gorge encloses the course of the Trigrad River that plunges into the Devil's Throat cave and 530 m further comes out as a large karst spring. It laters flows in to the Byunovska River. The gorge's west wall reaches 300 m in height, while the east one extends up to 300--350 m. In the beginning, the distance between the two walls is about 300 m, but reaches about 100 m in the north. The Trigrad Gorge is located 1.2 km from the village of Trigrad at 1450 above sea level and has a total length of 7 km, of which the real part is 2--3 km.

The Soda Dam, along NM state road 4, is a large hot spring deposit, made mostly of calcium carbonate. The springs used to empty out onto the dam over the Jemez River, but most of the water now exits from the road-cut across the road. Courtesy of the NM Department of Transportation. The Soda Dam hot spring waters start at the Valles Caldera, heated by the hot rock and magma beneath. They travel as hot ground water through Pennsylvanian limestone and shale, and rise to the surface along a fault at the Soda Dam. Most of the carbonate rock of the Dam bears traces of algal filaments, and Soda Dam rock has been used in studies of how ancient Martian life might be detected.

A large feudal palace, fortified walls reaching up to 3 m in width, two well-preserved underground water supply passages, 13 churches, administrative and residential buildings, workshops and streets have been excavated. The 12 m-high three-storey keep from the 14th century has also been fully preserved and was even used as a model for the reconstruction of Baldwin's Tower in Tsarevets, Veliko Tarnovo, in 1930. The site has been a national archaeological reserve since 1965 and is also a popular tourist attraction.

Initially the nucleus of the fortress consisted of a squared tower (the external sides: 8,15m x 8,5 m the inner sides: 4,30m x 4,60m). It is considered to be built in the first half of the 14th century, during the reign of Basarab 1 (1324-1351/1352), the founder of Walachia. The fortress was built directly on the rock. Seven miles southwest of Fort Union National Monument, the Mora River makes a U-shaped bend, encircling a few hundred acres of soft, fertile soil. Down the middle of this once verdant spot runs a single street, bordered east and west by almost forgotten ruins. This is Loma Parda - sleeping; blowing away bit by bit in the dry summer winds; crumbling inch by inch as rain, snow, and gravity tug at each visible remnant. Some chroniclers reminisce about family ties and loved ones buried in the now-neglected graveyards while others paint its past with scarlet words calling it the "Sodom on the Mora". Before the fort existed, the Loma Pardans loved dancing and gambling, as is evidenced by the remnants of saloons and dance halls. Soldiers from Fort Union were its frequent customers. The closure of Fort Union in 1891 did not kill Loma Parda ... "modern age" of railroads and paved highways beckoned the young folks with brighter lights, better wages, and wider horizons. World War II was the "coup de grace".

New Zealand: Queenstown, 4WD Skipper Canyon

Skippers Canyon is a scenic attraction located in the back country of Queenstown, New Zealand about 30 km away from Queenstown down town. Skippers Canyon was created by the mighty Shotover River. The rocks and sand that were transported in the Shotover River over time cut out the gorge. After about twenty thousand years of cutting, the Shotover River uncovered gold which was meant to be discovered. As a result, a gold rush was created and helped building settlements in Skippers Canyon. Those settlements were however only short-lived - they merely lasted as long as gold was discovered and abandoned soon after. After the gold rush, Skippers Canyon became a tourist attraction which it remains to be to this day. The major attractions in Skippers Canyon are the beautiful scenery, the remains of the gold rush, Skippers Road as well as the Skippers Bridge. Even though the completion of the existing Skippers Bridge was done after the gold rush was over, it is today one of the major attractions for visitors to Skippers Canyon as it spans a gorge with sheer rock faces on both sides and is about 100 meters above the river.

The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is located in southern New Mexico at the height of 9200 feet (2800 meters) in the Sacramento Mountains. This site, chosen in 1947, overlooks While Sands Missile Range in the Tularosa Basin. The dry air of the southwest, isolation from any major source of air pollution, and plenty of sunshine make this an excellent site for observing the Sun. The staff presently consists of research scientists, engineers, technicians, and support staff. In addition, scientists from other observatories and universities around the world come to the National Solar Observatory. The NSO Mission: The NSO advances knowledge of the Sun, both as an astronomical object and as the dominant external influence on earth, by providing forefront observational opportunities to the research community. Solar research is conducted here with cooperation with scientists around the world. With partners across the USA, this NSO designed the world's largest optical solar telescope, the 4-meter (13 ft.) Romania HiLItes: Fortified Church of Biertan (Transylvania)

The place called BIERTAN is one of the first rural settlements of Transylvania. The first documentary attestation was recorded in 1283. For nearly 300 years (1572-1867) it was here that the Lutheran Protestant Episcopate of Transylvania had its headquarters. THE SAXONS as we know them today started populating Transylvania in the Twelfth to the Fourteenth Centuries, coming from the cast and west of the Rhine. They were given rights in Transylvania and were free to practice the crafts they knew. The first Saxons who came to Biertan were peasants, but they all mastered crafts before coming to Transylvania. THE CIHURCII was built on the site of a Catholic basilica between 1490-1524. It remained catholic until the Reformation, after which it became a Protestant church. It is an extensive gothic building, having also renaissance and baroque elements (the pulpit, the northern gate, the door of the vestry). This church is one of the biggest rural churches in Transylvania. Since 1993, it has been on the patrimony list of UNESCO.

Fort Union National Monument, NM

There were three Fort Unions. The first was composed of shabby log buildings (1851-1861). The second was a star-shaped earthwork designed to defend the Santa Fe trail threatened by the Confederacy (1861-1862). In 1863, with New Mexico securely in Federal hands, the third (and final) Fort Union, whose ruins are visible today, was constructed. This sprawling installation, taking 6 years to complete, was the most extensive in the territory. It included not only a military post but a quartermaster depot with warehouses, corrals, shops, offices, and quarters. The supply function overshadowed that of the military and employed far more men, mostly civilians. Throughout the 1860s and the 1870s the troops from Fort Union continued to participate in operations against the Indians. Peace was attained in 1875 albeit on white man's terms. The supply depot continued to flourish until 1879, when the Santa Fe Railroad replaced the Santa Fe Trail. By 1891 the fort outlived its usefulness and was abandoned.

Romania (#24): Petru Voda Painted Monastery

Petru Voda Monastery ... The exterior painted frescoes of Bucovina's churches (Suceava County) appeared as an isolated phenomenon in the 16th century, and especially in Petru Rares's times. The number of monuments with such decoration was greater, but today only six are preserved: Arbore, Humor, Moldovita, Rasca, Sucevita and Voronet. Important traces can also be seen at Probota, Baia, Patrauti, Sfantu Ilie near Suceava and Suceava (Sf. Gheorghe - St. John the New Monastery). Sometimes -- for instance in Voronet and Sfantu Ilie, near Suceava -- the paintings and the church are not from the same period. A special case is the new Petru Voda Monastery, located in a village with the same name in Neamt County. It was built and painted in the last decade (1990s), with the obvious intention to be included in the Medieval tradition, but without imitating it.

Pecos National Historical Park, New Mexico

At midpoint in a passage through the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the ruins of a Pecos pueblo and Spanish mission share a small ridge. Long before Spaniards entered this country this village commanded the trade path between Pueblo farmers of the Rio Grande and hunting tribes of the buffalo plains. Its 2000 inhabitants could marshall 500 fighting men. With the arrival of the Spaniards and their material/religious quests in the late 1500s, and with decades of Spanish demands and Indian resentment, the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 climaxed this period. With the return (12 years later) of the Spaniards, peace prevailed. The Franciscans moderated their zeal. As allies and traders the Pecos became partners in a relaxed Spanish-Pueblo community. But by the 1780s, disease, Indian raids, and migration had reduced the population of Pecos to fewer that 300. Long standing divisions between the Church and things Spanish and those that hung to the old ways, contributed to this once powerful city-state decline. Pecos was almost a ghost town when the Santa Fe trade began flowing past it in 1821. The last survivors left a decaying pueblo and empty mission church in 1838. They joined their Towa-speaking relatives 80 miles west of Jémez pueblo, where their descendents still live today.

Salinas Pueblo Missions - Quarai

Looking down this small valley, past the rubble mounds that were Indian pueblos, beyond the abandoned Spanish mission, across pastures that were fertile fields, one looks at the broad Estancia Valley. Quarai was one of many villages in this part of the Spanish Empire known as the Salinas Jurisdiction. Though located on a remote frontier, Quarai participated in the meeting between the expanding European culture and the far different Indian tradition. In this valley, lie the abandoned remains of the first attempt to blend those two cultures. Quarai was on the southeastern fringe of the Tiwa-speaking Indians who migrated through mountain canyon trails from the area of present-day Albuquerque before AD 1300. They established settlements along the eastern slope of the Manzano Mountains at Chilili, Tajique and here at Quarai. They farmed, gathered salt at the nearby saline lakes, and took advantage of their location between the Rio Grande pueblos and the Plains Indians to become traders. This "hill" is actually the remains of a large masonry pueblo from the 1600s.
